‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 2′ Will Have More Women: Here’s Who We Could See

by 9 mins ago

“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn recently appeared with his brother Sean at DragonCon in Atlanta to meet with fans and take some questions about the future of the Marvel sci-fi series.

According to Collider, one fan wanted to know what Gunn’s plans were for bringing more female characters into the universe, which has become a more and more frequent request for Marvel, and if those plans involved Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel.

The good news is that the “Guardians of the Galaxy” sequel will have more women, according to Gunn, but it won’t be Captain Marvel. The director said that he wants to keep Peter Quill as the only earthling, and that he thinks Marvel has other plans for Carol Danvers.

So who might Gunn bring into the fold? There are a few good options from comics.

Martyr

Though the daughter of the original Captain Marvel was the most prominent female member of the Guardians during their 2008 iteration, her family history ties her into a complex web of mythology that might drag a movie down. She was created by her brother, and then became Quasar for a time, before dying and taking up the name “Martyr.” There’s potential here if her story is simplified to one identity (possibly just Quasar), but this feels like a long shot.

What If ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Had ‘Star Wars’-Style Credits?

by 18 mins ago

If you haven’t already checked out StarWars.com’s Crawl Creator, you absolutely should. It allows you to make an authentic “Star Wars” credit sequence with whatever title or text that you want.

I’ve had a bunch of fun with it already. They’re still working out some of the bugs, so I can’t share my creations with you directly. In the mean time, you can plug my “Guardians of the Galaxy” crawl into the creator to get a taste of what a mash-up of the two might be like.

The war waging between the Kree and the Xandarians, after years of violence and countless lives lost, has ended in a peace treaty.

Enraged by what he perceives as surrender by his people, Ronan the Accuser has turned to Thanos for a way to destroy Xandar and the Nova Corps.

In exchange for the Power Stone, the Mad Titan promises to end Xandar and perhaps the universe as we know it…

Got a fun riff on the “Star Wars” crawl? Post it in the comments below!

Don’t Call It A Scandal: Here’s How Not To Talk About Jennifer Lawrence’s Photos

by 18 mins ago

We’ve seen stories of celebrity phone hacks before, but the currently developing story of a massive theft of personal celebrity photos appears to be different. Potentially dozens of actresses, athletes and singers, including Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton, were targeted. The stolen property reached the masses all at once. And at its core, it was a massive violation of personal privacy, which more and more people have experience with, as the internet works its way into each corner of our lives.

And so appropriately, the conversation has changed. If you look on Twitter and Facebook, there’s obviously still those who are eager to see the work of these criminals for themselves, but more and more people are speaking up for the victims and changing the conversation.

For information and resources on how to prevent — or deal with — a hack, read more at A Thin Line

As more details from this case come to light, there’s sure to be additional talk about how this happened, who was responsible and how we can stop it from happening again. That being the case, we should all know how to talk about this kind of thing: even if it’s not a celebrity, photos and texts can spread through schools and towns, and changing how we all think about and discuss these violations is the first step to making things better for the victims and worse for the criminals.

Don’t call this a “leak.”
Let’s look at this in a more literal way. ...

Elsa Almost Wore A Coat Made Of Weasels, And 4 Other ‘Frozen’ Secrets

by 20 mins ago

It’s been more than nine months since “Frozen” hit theaters and became the international phenomenon that caught almost everyone by surprise, and people are still hungry to know about the story of Princess Anna and Queen Elsa.

For most movies, a making-of special airing on TV more than nine months after its release might be a little late, but “The Story of Frozen,” which premieres tonight (September 2) on ABC, manages to stay relevant thanks to the only-slightly-cooled frenzy around the new Disney classic.

The special sheds a lot of new light on the making of “Frozen,” with plenty of new stories from the people behind the scenes. If you check it out tonight, which you definitely should, here’s five things you can expect to learn.

1. “Do You Want To Build A Snowman” was almost cut.

Just months before “Frozen” was scheduled to hit theaters, the song that young Anna sings to Elsa wasn’t even in the movie. It had been removed, but its popularity among Disney employees was strong enough to convince the filmmakers to add it back in.

2. Two lucky girls played very important roles.

The two actresses who voiced the different versions of Anna during “Do You Want to Build A Snowman” have a very personal connection to the film. Katie Lopez, who sang for the youngest Anna, is the daughter of songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Teenage Anna is played by Agatha Lee Monn, the daughter of director Jennifer Lee.

3. There’s ...

Who Was The Biggest Badass Of The Summer Movie Season?

by 38 mins ago

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but summer is over. I know, I know. It just started, for sure, but the kids are back in school and the film festival circuit has begun.

But before we bid farewell to summer 2014 forever, I want to hand out some honors for the stand-out performances and the characters and body parts that made this season one to remember.

Movie with the Most Important Use of “Okay”
“The Fault in Our Stars”

The Fault In Our Stars

There’s probably no more disposable line of dialogue than “okay,” but “The Fault in Our Stars” turns it into something that can brings tears to audience eyes, both happy and sad.

Movie Most Likely to Help Us Forget “X-Men: Last Stand”
“X-Men: Days of Future Past”

Jennifer-Lawrence-in-X-Men-Days-of-Future-Past1

Somehow, they did it. I don’t know how they did it, but the latest “X-Men” went even further than “First Class” to rectify the standing of the series that kicked off the modern superhero age. And now I just want more.

Most Disappointingly Okay Sequel
“How to Train Your Dragon 2″

how_to_train_your_dragon_2-wide

The original “How to Train Your Dragon” was such a surprising delight that anything short of great would be a let-down. While I admire the grander scope of the sequel, this one was a bit all over the place.

Best Sequel
“34 Jump Street: Return of the Ghost”

Was there really any other choice?

These Feminist Critiques Are Exactly What Video Games Need

by 10 mins ago

Despite the fact that today pretty much everyone plays video games in one form or another, there’s still that hardcore group of gamers that discuss and debate topics that rarely, if ever, reach the more casual player who likes to play Candy Crush on the subway. Sometimes those insular conversations do gain broader attention, but it’s usually not something good.

This time, a week of particularly ugly online comments, YouTube video rants and harassing tweets culminated with someone tweeting a series of increasingly disturbing threats to Anita Sarkeesian, a video blogger and pop culture critic. (Read here. Warning: NSFW)

When director/writer Joss Whedon defended Skarkeesian, he received this message.

How did it get to the point? Sadly, this kind of abuse is nothing new for Sarkeesian.

The onslaught of hate that some within the gaming community have brought down on Sarkeesian started back in the summer of 2012, when she launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a video series explaining some of the problematic tropes of video games when it came to the portrayal of women. She initially set a goal of $6,000, but when the campaign drew negative attention from gamers, it also brought more funds.

Nearly 7,000 backers pledged a total of over $150,000 to Sarkeesian’s campaign to explore why a rapidly expanding medium has such a troubled history and continuing relationship with half of the world’s population.

When Sarkeesian’s YouTube channel, “Feminist Frequency,” began rolling out “Tropes vs Women in Video Games” ...

‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ Photos Shows Off Hawkeye’s New Look

by 9 mins ago

I know everyone is still really excited about dancing baby Groot and how good “Guardians of the Galaxy” ended up being, but I’d like to remind everyone that the next Marvel movie is “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

Crazy, I know.

That being the case, we’re beginning to see more of the curtain officially pulled back, which is a nice change of pace from paparazzi photos. The latest reveal comes courtesy of Empire and their big preview article.

Those on-set spies gave us blurry look at Hawkeye’s brand new coat, but here we can see it in its fully, kind-of-silly glory.

by 19 mins ago

One of the biggest elements that the “Hunger Games” series will introduce with the upcoming “Mockingjay: Part I” is the rebellion and the cast of really badass characters that will help Katniss in her quest against the Capitol.

A new collection of character posters (via Wired) just dropped, highlighting some of the new faces, including Cressida played by “Game of Thrones” alum and half-bald badass Natalie Dormer.

Also, there’s Gale.

Check out the new posters for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ below.

Winter Soldier Will Play A Key Role In ‘Captain America 3′

by 19 mins ago

Captain America: The Winter Soldier” — as great as it was — ends with one of its major storylines unresolved. What becomes of Bucky Barnes, now the Winter Soldier, after Cap shakes something loose from his brainwashed head?

Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed “Winter Soldier,” are picking the story back up with Captain America’s third solo movie, set for release in 2016, and they talked with me about why that storyline is what’s really interested them about the further adventures of Steve Rogers.

While the specifics of the plot are not public knowledge yet — Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely just turned in their first draft last week — there are a set of questions that the Russos hope will drive the story forward.

“Is the Winter Soldier the world’s most dangerous assassin that’s ever lived or the world’s longest serving P.O.W.?” Anthony Russo asked. “Is he responsible for his actions since he was turned into the Winter Soldier, or is he innocent by reason of insanity? Where does this character live now? Is he ever going to be acceptable again to Cap in the way he once was, before he was the Winter Soldier? Those are the really complicated relationship questions and philosophical questions and emotional questions that intrigued us moving forward.”

These questions might not reveal who the villain will be or whether the Winter Soldier will become Captain America, but it gives a sense of where the emotional heart of the movie will lie, an element ...

This Kid’s Dad Turned Home Videos Into An Action Movie

by 1 min ago

Daniel Hashimoto is a Dreamworks animator and a totally rad dad. Earlier this year, he took home video footage featuring his three-year-old son and added effects to make them into full-blown action movies. That video went viral, and now Hashimoto is back with another installment of “Action Movie Kid.”

This time, the tiny leading man finds himself in situations inspired by video games like “Portal” and “Mario Kart,” in addition to your classic lightsaber scenario.
