‘Shutter Island’ Is Getting The Prequel TV Series You Didn’t Know You Needed

by 3 mins ago

If you try to sell me on pretty much anything related to Martin Scorsese or HBO, I’m going to be at least a little interested. Put them together, I’m all-ears. If it happens to be for a television series based on “Shutter Island,” now I have tears in my eyes.

Well, Deadline is reporting that the dream I didn’t even know I had has come true. HBO and Paramount’s new television division is teaming up with Scorsese and Dennis Lehane, who wrote the original “Shutter Island” novel, for a prequel series tentatively called “Ashecliffe.”

It sounds like all of the deals are still in the works, but I imagine that all of the parties involved would want to make this show a reality. According to the Deadline story, Scorsese is game to direct the pilot, which Lehane will write, after the legendary filmmaker finishes work on “Silence,” starring Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver.

There’s definitely some mystery to mine from the 2010 movie, despite that story being surprisingly intimate and small in scope. The report says that “Ashcliffe” would take place around the turn of the century at the asylum Leonardo DiCaprio visits in the film.

Fingers crossed that this all comes together. In the mean time, I’m going to go remind myself how great “Shutter Island” is.

‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ Billboards Get Vandalized In The Coolest Way Possible

by 19 mins ago

The clever marketing campaign around “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ has so far done an amazing job prepping us to head back to a dystopia on the verge of collapse. (Also, creepy Peeta.)

A new set of billboards, seen popping up in New York and L.A. uses some of the unsettling images we’ve already seen, but with an added, rebellious bonus.

The symbol of the Mockingjay, the titular bird that’s been slowly taking over the Capitol’s propaganda appears to be spray painted onto the District-specific posters.

This one from ComingSoon.net marked a District 6 billboard in L.A.

And another in NYC (via flirtykurty‘s tumblr) vandalized one from District 9.

Have you spotted the Mockingjay in your city? Let us know in the comments.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ opens in theaters on November 21, 2014.

Backstreet Boys Tweet ’90s-tastic Throwback VMAs Photo

by 33 mins ago

How ’90s is the VMA throwback photo that the Backstreet Boys just posted to Twitter? Let’s count the ways.

1. The “Matrix”-inspired black trench coats and shades. I’m thinking it’s not a coincidence that the movie came out a few months earlier.

2. The one (at least) confirmed case of frosted tips. (Lookin’ at you, A.J.)

3. The matching combat boots.

4. Nick Carter. All of Nick Carter.

The ‘Harry Potter’ Movies Were Way Scarier Than You Remember

by 16 mins ago

By the end of the series, the “Harry Potter” movies got pretty dark, and even though they’re based on children’s book, none of the films were short on scares — some of which went by too quickly to notice.

To that point, redditor Such_A_Jerxes noticed how scary the tightly edited apparition sequences in the later “Harry Potter” movies were and pulled some screen shots.

I’ve embedded a few below, but be sure to check out the full Imgur gallery to know the true horror of apparating.

Winter Comes For George R.R. Martin During Ice Bucket Challenge

by 4 mins ago

George R.R. Martin has made his living putting beloved characters through all sorts of painful experiences, but how does the “Game of Thrones” author stand up to a little cold? Not too well, apparently.

Martin took the Ice Bucket Challenge after three people, including fellow author Neil Gaiman, nominated him to help fight ALS — which everyone can do over at ALSA.org.

The creator of all of Westeros was smart enough to take on the Ice Bucket Challenge next to a pool, but his wails suggest he wouldn’t do too well in his own fictional world. “Winter came!” he screamed.

What Was Drake Thinking During ‘Anaconda’? We Have The Answer

by 5 mins ago

Drake got a very special, up-close-and-personal view of Nicki Minaj‘s video for “Anaconda,” so of course everyone was wondering what the hell could be going through his mind during that scene.

Now we don’t have to imagine.

A video just popped up over on Facebook that brings us inside the head of Drake during the filming of “Anaconda” with the help of Spongebob Squarepants, Phoenix Wright and Sarah McLachlan.

Rihanna And Eminem Did The Ice Bucket Challenge Live On Stage

by 8 mins ago

In front of his hometown audience, Eminem took the plunge and did the Ice Bucket Challenge to help fight ALS. (And if you haven’t already, you should too by going to ALSA.org and donating money.)

Eminem was quick to spread the love with challenges to Denaun Porter, Rick Rubin and his fellow “Monster Tour” headliner and VMA nominee, Rihanna, who answered the call immediately.

Remember, if you’ve taken the Ice Bucket Challenge, that doesn’t mean you’re free from donation. You still have to give to complete the task. Head to ALSA.org now.

The Hidden ‘Breaking Bad’ Reference You Missed In ‘Godzilla’

by 18 mins ago

Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla” is really great for a lot of reasons, and fans of giant monsters fights are still finding cool stuff buried in the blockbuster.

Most recently, someone over on reddit pulled stills from the uncensored opening credits, before all of the in-jokes got blacked out and classified. The whole gallery is a lot of fun to look through, but one credit in particular stands out.

For Bryan Cranston’s acting credit, the team behind “Godzilla” snuck in a nods to his “Breaking Bad” and “Malcolm in the Middle” characters.

Did you see it?

The words “Walter,” “white” and “Malcolm” appeared above Cranston’s name just before getting whited out.

It’s a small, fun nod to Cranston’s work, and it makes me love “Godzilla” a little bit more.

“Godzilla” will be available on digital platforms on August 26 and hits Blu-ray and DVD on September 16.

Tom Hardy Photobombed A Wedding Party As Bane

by 16 mins ago

Imagine that you’re getting married in Pittsburgh in the summer of 2011, and then all of a sudden the masked leader of the League of Shadows drops in.

That’s exactly what happened in this picture that popped up on reddit recently. A wedding party was walking past the Pittsburgh set of “The Dark Knight Rises” when Tom Hardy, dressed in full Bane regalia, waved to them.

It’s the kind of magical moment that will last in the memories of everyone involved. I’m not sure if that had more to do with the wedding or seeing Bane, though.

‘True Detective’: HBO Reveals When Season Two Will Premiere

by 17 mins ago

If early reports are to be believed, fans of “True Detective” have an idea of who we’ll see when the HBO anthology series reutrns — most likely Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Elizabeth Moss and Vince Vaughn — but we weren’t sure when that would happen.

Well, according to HBO programming director Michael Lombardo, we can expect to return to Nic Pizzalatto’s dark world next summer (via The Hollywood Reporter). But Lombardo also mentioned that things might not be quite as dark the next time around.

“It’s still dark,” Lombardo said (via Variety). “Nic explores the darkness in people’s souls… It’s not as dark, but it’s not a light ride. Nic likes looking into the crevices of the soul.”

In addition to a slightly lighter tone, the second season will also be different from the story of Rust Cohle and Marty Hart in its number of directors. Cary Fukunaga directed the crap out of all eight episodes in the first season, but Lombardo confirmed that “three or four different directors” will tackle the next set of episodes.

None of this is shocking information, but it’s the most we’ve heard officially in a long time. Lombardo wouldn’t confirm the rumored cast, but said that we’d hear soon.
