Explaining The ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’ Ending

by 06/09/14

Edge of Tomorrow” may not have found the huge summer audience that its producers were hoping for, but the Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt-led sci-fi action movie already has a dedicated group of fans, now eagerly debating the film’s ending.

SPOILERS AHEAD

As you know if you’ve seen “Edge of Tomorrow” (and you should if you haven’t), Cage and Rita take J-squad along with them on a last-ditch assault on the Omega, which is hiding deep under the Louvre. In short, everyone dies, including Cage, but not before getting covered in Omega blood and regaining his reset ability.

Cage wakes up, of course, but he’s in the helicopter — where we first met him. He’s gone further back than ever before, and the Omega has stayed dead. Huh?

Watching the every end of “Edge of Tomorrow,” I more or less accepted the ending at face value, acknowledging that it didn’t necessarily make sense but also that I didn’t really care. The movie is awesome.

But redditor HanzoSteel has posted an explanation for the ending. HanzoSteel points to the timing of the final assault on the Omega at the Louvre as the key to making any sense of it.

The first thing to remember is that Cage has left the “Wake up, maggot” loop behind him. There is nothing tying him back to that sequence of events, which started when the Alpha bleeds on him at the beach. Cage and Rita lead the assault the night before the beach invasion, and when he’s ...

Marvel Announces New Director, Writer For ‘Ant-Man’

by 06/07/14

After a long, public search, Marvel Studios have finally found Edgar Wright’s “Ant-Man” replacement.

The company announced on its site that Peyton Reed (“Yes Man,” “The Breakup”) will take over directing duties from Wright, who walked after an unapproved rewrite of the script he penned with Joe Cornish.

The contentious screenplay will be rewritten again, this time by “Anchorman” director Adam McKay, who met with Marvel last month as a potential replacement for Wright. McKay turned down that job due to other commitments, but the writing job allows him to still be involved.

Bringing McKay on board is the real news here. Since Wright put in months of planning in pre-production, the look and action sequences of the movie are already determined for Peyton.

A rewrite from McKay will hopefully keep the movie funny, even if Wright’s style is no longer present.

This is been one of the most chaotic development periods for Marvel Studios, but the company is determined to meet the July 17, 2015 release date it previously announced.

Channing Tatum Arm Wrestles Jimmy Fallon, We All Win

by 06/07/14

Channing Tatum stopped by “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” to promote his brand new movie “22 Jump Street,” but the lighthearted promotional appearance turned ugly when host and guest expressed their love for talking about what they’re going to do after winning an arm wrestling match.

Over the next five minutes, Tatum and Fallon discussed their plans after defeating the other. In short: Fallon is going to take up pottery, and Tatum is changing his name to “Dick Tugnuts.”

It makes sense if you watch the video.

Why ‘True Detective’ Needs More Matthew McConaughey

by 06/06/14

It’s impossible to separate the popularity of “True Detective” with the quality of the performances in it, especially from Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. So much so that part of the anticipation for season two is about seeing what the show is like without them.

We know that the next story will follow three different characters, but that doesn’t mean we’ll never see McConaughey back on the mystery series in a future season.

Look back at how “True Detective” pulled off its amazing long take.

Now that the Emmy season is quickly approaching, the HBO series has reentered the conversation, and in his recent interview with Deadline, McConaughey said that he would consider returning.

“I liked ‘True Detective,’ the whole series and the experience of making it, so much that I’d be open to doing another one now,” he said.

As someone who followed the first season of “True Detective” very closely, I think that while it’s important to get some new blood onto the show next season, at some point McConaughey should return.

Not to undersell the many elements of the show, including Harrelson’s generally underrated performance, Nic Pizzolatto’s smart writing and Cary Fukunaga’s brilliant direction, but the show took off like it did largely because of McConaughey’s performance.

Even in the age of the haunted TV antihero, Rust Cohle didn’t talk like any other character we knew, and the two versions of him, twelve years apart, were only believable because of McConaughey’s commitment to both.

The show’s appeal in its first season ...

Dumbledore Actor To Reteam With J.K. Rowling For New Miniseries

by 06/06/14

An upcoming TV miniseries adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s “The Casual Vacancy” has just announced its cast and a familiar face from Hogwarts is set to appear… sans wand, of course.

BBC One and HBO have announced (via Variety) the roster for the miniseries. “The Casual Vacancy” will star Michael Gambon, Keeley Hawes, Rory Kinnear, Monica Dolan, Julia McKenzie and Abigail Lawrie.

Fans of Rowling’s literary phenomenon will no doubt recognize Gambon’s name.

Beginning with “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” Gambon was tasked with the unenviable job of taking over the role of Dumbledore after the actor who originated the part, Richard Harris, died shortly after filming “Chamber of Secrets.”

Over the course of six films, Gambon crafted his own take on the Hogwarts headmaster, and it’s certainly exciting to see him working once again with Rowling’s writing.

“The Casual Vacancy” will be comprised of three one-hour segments. Production begins next month in England.

Emily Blunt Is Our Next Great Action Hero

by 06/04/14

Perhaps the most surprising thing about “Edge of Tomorrow” — apart from the movie’s great sense of humor — is how it cedes many of its badass moments to Emily Blunt and not its leading man Tom Cruise.

Cruise’s Cage eventually becomes a peer to Blunt’s battle-repeating Rita thanks to the movie’s “Groundhog Day”-like conceit, but not before establishing one of the best movie heroines in recent memory.

A lot of that has to do with Blunt’s stellar performance. She’s everything you could want from a hero: tough, smart and vulnerable. Rita is nearly as central to the story as Cage, without getting pigeonholed into being just his love interest. In fact, because of the story’s day-long time frame, there are only a few moments of actual romance, so most of the run time is spent establishing how tough Rita is.

And Blunt absolutely sells it, but that isn’t too surprising, since she’s been uniformly great since her breakout in “The Devil Wears Prada.” Her turn in “Edge of Tomorrow” makes it perfectly clear why Marvel Studios has been so eager to work with her for years.

The connection between Blunt and the house of Iron Man dates all the way back to the second outing of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark when she was originally cast as Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow. She eventually dropped out of that film do “Gulliver’s Travels” with Jack Black.

Marvel tried again to bring Blunt into the fold with “Captain America: The First ...

Any ‘Metal Gear Solid’ Movie Needs These Eight Things

by 06/04/14

After years of development, it seems like a movie based on the “Metal Gear Solid” series is finally moving forward. Deadline reported yesterday that “The Kings of Summer” director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is in early talks to bring Solid Snake to the big screen.

Like any video game adaptation, a movie based on this series is a difficult proposition for a number of reasons. The games from creator Hideo Kojima play increasingly like movies with extended cut scenes involving clones, conspiracies and alternate histories, but there are few game series that feel as tailor-made for adaptation as “Metal Gear Solid.”

If Sony does move ahead with “Metal Gear Solid,” there are a few things fans need to see the make a bona fide Solid Snake adventure that was worth the wait.

Solid Snake
Solid_Snake
The hero of the story is its most crucial element and likely the one that’s easiest to screw up. Snake isn’t just a generic black ops spy guy. Yes, he’s the ultimate badass, but he’s got a brain. It’s easy to mock “Metal Gear Solid” for its lengthy (and often cheesy) monologues about war, humanity and the meaning of life, but those are essential to the spirit of the game. Snake needs to be the same thoughtful stealth expert with a really messed up family situation.

CODEC
Snake’s go-to method of communication is a series staple and a must-have for any movie.

The Shadow Moses Incident
Pretty much everyone who has played the original PlayStation game agrees that the 1998 ...

‘Star Wars’: J.J. Abrams Responds To Leaks… With Another Leak

by 06/04/14

Turns out that you can only leak so many photos from the “Star Wars: Episode VII” set before J.J. Abrams has something to say about it.

A tweet from Bad Robot suggests that the master of the mystery box is taking the steady stream of leaks in stride.

For those of you who might be confused, the checkered piece of metal in the background of Abrams’ note is the hologram chess board that appeared in the original “Star Wars.”

Not that it needs to be said after the latest round of photos from TMZ, but this is Abrams’ way of saying “Of course the Millennium Falcon is in ‘Episode VII.’ Because what’s the point of continuing the series otherwise?”

The tweet is a fairly lighthearted response, especially from a director who has been burned by leaks before.

Maybe this is the beginning of a new Abrams era, one that’s a little cooler about letting info from set slip to the eager fans. Hopefully?

The rest of “Star Wars: Episode VII” is set to leak on December 18, 2015.
