Millennium Falcon First Look In ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Is Worth Getting Excited About

by 06/03/14

For the second day in a row, TMZ has posted pictures from the set of “Star Wars: Episode VII” that were presumably taken by somebody who is no longer employed. The gossip site provided another look at everyone’s favorite “Episode VII” character, Space Pig.

Oh, and an under-construction Millennium Falcon.

Even more than the roundtable photo or the shots from Tatooine, this feels like the most concrete proof yet that — yes — there’s going to be a new “Star Wars” movie that continues the story from the original trilogy.

And that’s something worth getting excited about.

Even in light of cool news stories like Lupita Nyong’o joining the cast and practical creatures, there’s been a hesitance to look forward to “Episode VII,” and I really can’t blame the skeptics. We’re “Star Wars” fans. We’ve been here before, and we’ve been let down.

This is different, though, and I don’t think that I’m falling for the old “Star Wars” trick when I say that.

Audiences haven’t seen the Millennium Falcon (non-LEGO) fly since 1983. How could you not look forward to that? And it will be piloted by Han Solo and Chewbacca. Nothing could dissuade me from wanting to see that.

I’m not saying that because there’s Space Pig and a scale model of the Millennium Falcon that “Episode VII” will be a great movie that rights the wrongs of “Star Wars” past. No one can say one way or another whether this will be a good movie at all, but ...

7 Action Movies From The ’90s We Actually Want Remade

by 06/02/14

Last week, we found out that every action movie from the ’90s is being remade. Well, just “Cliffhanger” and “Stargate,” but that’s still too many.

There are plenty of muscle-bound flicks from the ’90s that had great concepts but didn’t quite stick the landing or had themes or gimmicks that deserve further exploration.

If I was running a studio hell-bent on remaking movies from the ’90s, these are the ones I’d tackle.

“The Saint”

Here’s a movie with an undeniably cinematic concept — master thief who is also a master of disguise — that could be perfect in the hands of a flexible actor, capable of pulling off multiple personalities, like Tom Hardy. It’s more about the acting showcase rather than the name recognition.

“Demolition Man”

What stands out from this middle Stallone entry is the built-in comedy of a man out of time. Given to someone with slightly better comedic chops than Sly, this could be a refreshingly funny action remake. A cameo from the three shells would be required though.

“Double Impact”

I’ve always said that there need to be more action movies featuring leads that don’t know they have a twin and who eventually team up with said twin. In a perfect world, we’d have one of those a year, but I’ll settle for one stellar “Double Impact” remake. Casting suggestion: Two Channing Tatums.

“Rocketeer”

This is a touchy one because I (and many others) love Joe Johnston’s WWII adventure flick, but there’s no reason that Cliff Secord couldn’t be modeled off a James Bond. ...

LEGOs Recreating ‘Star Wars’ Are Better Than The Real Thing

by 06/02/14

Pretty much everyone who played with LEGO sets based on their favorite movies remembers recreating scenes, expect with minifigs.

But you’ve probably never taken it to the level that Vesa Lehtimäki has.

The photographer uses high-quality lighting and camera equipment to bring iconic “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars” scenes to life with minifigs standing in for Han Solo, Boba Fett and many others. The shots are truly incredible and you can see a few below, but please check out the rest of Lehtimäki’s work over on his Flickr page.

What Do The ‘Avatar’ Sequels Have In Common With ‘Breaking Bad’?

by 06/02/14

The three “Avatar” sequels that James Cameron intends to film simultaneously are obviously monumental tasks unto themselves, but there’s even more to making them possible than shooting them back-to-back-to-back.

As Cameron explained to the Hero Complex Film Festival (as transcribed by /Film), the project required three studio approved scripts, which is why he took an entirely different approach to writing the next adventures on Pandora.

When the director announced his plans to film all three movies at once, the news came with a team of writers — Josh Friedman, Rick Jaff and Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno — that would each take on co-writing duties with Cameron on one of the planned films.

What we didn’t know was that when he was developing the stories with the writers, Cameron didn’t clue them in on which specific film they’d work on, instead keeping everyone in the dark and creating a “highly collaborative, fun experience” like a television writers’ room. This is essentially how Vince Gilligan worked through “Breaking Bad.” He was the keeper of the keys but worked closely with a team of writers to refine the story, before handing off individual episode scripts to specific scribes.

“What we did that was unique was we sat in the writing room for five months, eight hours a day, and we worked out every beat of the story across all three films so it all connects as one, sort of, three film saga,” Cameron said. “And I didn’t tell them which one ...

Josh Brolin Is Thanos In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

by 05/30/14

It has been the question that’s plagued ” Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn for a year.

Who is playing Thanos?

The beleaguered Gunn has often told the unrelenting Facebook commenters that the villain teased at the end of “The Avengers” has been cast, but that he intends to keep that under wraps.

Well, according to Latino Review, and confirmed by Variety Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin is who’s hiding underneath the veil of secrecy.

Since this news isn’t coming straight from Disney, it’s worth taking it with a small grain of salt. Latino Review has been on-point with Marvel, especially recently, but it’s not a done deal until you’re hearing it on Marvel.com or from Gunn, who has been pretty transparent throughout production.

If Brolin does end up voicing Thanos — the character is CGI — this is fantastic news.

Since his comeback with “No Country for Old Men,” Brolin has consistently been better than the movies he’s in. He would have made a solid Batman, but if this is his entry into the superhero movie world, I’m not going to complain.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” opens in theaters on August 1.

Lee Pace Has No Idea What ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Will Be Like

by 05/30/14

In addition to his new AMC show, “Halt and Catch Fire,” Lee Pace has a little movie called “Guardians of the Galaxy” in his near future. It’s a film so strange, that Pace doesn’t even know what to expect.

“I’m really curious what the fans, in particular, will make of Ronan the Accuser…. I don’t know what to expect out of watching this movie,” Pace said on the latest episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.

“I know what I did when we were filming it. I know I had a good time with it. I have no idea. I don’t know what this movie is going to be.”

To listen to the rest of Lee Pace’s interview, including the story about how he landed the “Guardians” role, head over to Happy Sad Confused.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” opens in theaters on August 1.

Why Does ‘Maleficent’ Look So Much Like ‘Avatar’?

by 05/30/14

If you’ve seen trailers or TV spot’s for “Maleficent,” you may have noticed a few similarities to other recent blockbusters.

Like how the floating lights Princess Aurora examines look like the ones from “Avatar.”

Or how the flying sequence from “Maleficent” resembles another scene in the James Cameron hit.

The answer is actually very simple (and not just one studio trying to recreate the success of another).

Robert Stromberg, who makes his directorial debut on “Maleficent,” won an Oscar for his production design work on “Avatar.” The distinctive look he gave Pandora led to other jobs, which had his signature look all over them.

For example, take a look at these stills, one from “Maleficent,” the other from “Oz the Great and Powerful,” another film he did the production design for.

Stromberg clearly has a style, and it’s one that’s won him two Oscars. So if you think there was some less-than-cool borrowing from other movies for “Maleficent,” you’re just seeing the director’s touch.

“Maleficent” is in theaters now.

‘Ant-Man’: Could The ‘Anchorman’ Director Replace Edgar Wright?

by 05/30/14

It looks like Marvel is taking the first steps to filling the void left by Edgar Wright’s abrupt exit from “Ant-Man.” The “World’s End” director left the project (and simultaneously smashed the dreams of nerds everywhere) after Marvel reportedly order a rewrite of the script by Wright and his partner Joe Cornish.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios is meeting with directors in hopes of quickly finding a replacement to helm the Paul Rudd-led superhero movie.

The report claims that Adam McKay (“Anchroman”), Ruben Fleischer (“Zombieland”) and Rawson Thurber (“We’re the Millers”) are all meeting with the Disney-owned studio as potential candidates for the job.

THR suggests that McKay could have an advantage because of his previous work with Rudd, but it’s also worth noting that he has the most experience, both in terms of filmmaking and commercial success.

While “Zombieland” was a nice surprise, Fleischer is most recently coming off of the bomb that was “Gangster Squad,” another expensive studio film.

Thurber, on the other hand, has only recently come onto studio radars thanks to “We’re the Millers,” but that movie’s success had more to do with Jennifer Aniston’s choice of underwear than the director’s vision.

Whoever Marvel goes with for “Ant-Man,” it will be interesting to see what movie opens in theaters next summer or whenever it comes out. Will it have any of Wright’s touch after another director takes on the rewritten script? We’ll have to wait and see.

“Ant-Man” is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July ...

‘What If’ Trailer: Daniel Radcliffe Enters The Friend Zone

by 05/29/14

The premiere trailer for Daniel Radcliffe’s very first romantic comedy has just debuted, and I have to say it looks very sweet.

Radcliffe is definitely the stand out in the trailer, even among a stellar cast that also includes Zoe Kazan and Adam Driver.

Check out the preview above, and see “What If” when it opens in limited release on August 1, before expanding.

New ‘Annie’ Trailer Debuts More Updated Songs

by 05/29/14

From what we’ve been able to tell, the “Annie” remake starring Quvenzhané Wallis and Jamie Foxx hasn’t changed that much from the Broadway musical, despite taking place in an entirely different era. The major differences so far has been changing Daddy Warbucks to Bill Shacks and adding a more modern beat to “It’s A Hard Knock Life.”

A new preview sheds a little bit more light on the updated story, which now involves a viral video and more remixed songs. Also, the word “orphanage” has been swapped out for “foster kid” in “Hard Knock Life.”

“Annie” opens on December 19.
