How ‘The Wire’ Prepared Michael K. Williams For The End Of ‘Boardwalk Empire’

by 3 mins ago

Last night’s “Boardwalk Empire” marked the beginning of the end for the period gangster drama, and at the red carpet premiere for the final season, the cast shared their mixed emotions about saying “goodbye” to the show and their characters.

“I’m sad to see it go, but I’m excited to give it to the world and get them what they’ve been waiting for. I’m going to miss my coworkers. We got along,” said Michael K. Willams, who plays Chalky White. “There was great writing, a great crew and great cast. It was a great working environment, so I’m going to miss that.”

But Williams is well-prepared for his current series to end. He’s been through this before. Williams earned serious recognition for playing fan-favorite character Omar on “The Wire.” The two experiences of ending a series have been markedly different for him though.

“Chalky grew on me in a way that Omar may or may not have. I was a little more focused going into this show, a little more experience as to how to carry a reoccurring character, like Chalky,” Williams said. “I’m going to miss the work we did as a cast.”

When “The Wire” ended, Williams didn’t know how to handle that experience, but for “Boardwalk Empire,” he’s more prepared.

“I had no idea what I was dealing with when ‘The Wire’ ended. I got really sad, and I just didn’t understand,” he said. “I got a little too attached to the show, to the character, to the coworkers. ...

What Does The ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Cast Want To Take From The Set?

by 26 mins ago

The final season of “Boardwalk Empire” is about to begin, and that means we’ll all have to say goodbye to the technical masterpiece of the Prohibition-era show. Every piece of the design, from the sets to the time-traveling special effects, made this show feel so authentic, but perhaps the most impressive productions were the suits.

The entire show was tailored to a tee, with most of the male characters sporting costume suits from series designer John A. Dunn and tailor Martin Greenfield. At the red carpet premiere for the fifth season, I asked some of the cast whether they took home any souvenirs from the set.

Michael Stuhlbarg, who played Arnold Rothstein, hadn’t gotten any yet, but hoped there was a possibility. “I did not yet, but maybe I will. They were gorgeous, and most of mine were handmade.”

Anatol Yusef, a.k.a. Meyer Lansky, used his 5′ 4.5″ height to get a suit, but he wasn’t aware that his cast mates weren’t as lucky. “I didn’t know that [people didn't get suits],” he said. “No comment. Michael [Shtuhlbarg's] suit is probably going to be worn by someone. There’ s not many people that are going to be wearing my suit unless they’re deciding to weight lift for Turkey for the Olympics or something.”

Another cast member was in the process of getting a suit. Vincent Piazza, who plays Lucky Luciano, said “I’m in the process of trying to walk away. Right now, it’s more of a crawl away with suits. ...

9 Insane Plot Points From The ‘Forrest Gump’ Sequel

by 37 mins ago

In the 20 years since it hit theaters, “Forrest Gump” has eclipsed the book it was based off of. Thanks to the award-winning performance from Tom Hanks, Winston Groom’s 1986 novel has mostly been reduced to trivia because of how different the film version of the character ended up being.

There’s also the fact that the book Forrest got a sequel and the movie one didn’t.

It’s a pretty strange book that would have made for an even weirder movie, so as “Forrest Gump” heads back into theaters for an IMAX rerelease, here’s some things you might not know about “Gump & Co.”

1. Forrest goes broke.

Sadly, Bubba Gump Shrip Company goes through some hard times after Lt. Dan sells his portion of the company. Forrest resorts to working in a strip club… as a janitor.

2. And then becomes a player for the New Orleans Saints.

In true Forrest fashion, he meets an NFL player at the strip club, and before he knows it, he’s footballing professionally.

3. But Jenny’s ghost keeps appearing to him.

Forrest’s childhood friend doesn’t die in the books until the sequel, and afterward, she becomes a guardian angel of sorts for him and their son, appearing multiple times throughout the novel.

4. He also helps create the formula for New Coke.

This soft drink disaster falls in line with one of the recurring themes of the book. Whereas “Forrest Gump” tells the story of his many accidental successes, “Gump and Co.” ...

‘Fast And Furious’ Director May Take The Wheel For ‘True Detective’ Season Two

by 53 mins ago

The first season of “True Detective” was just as much of a showcase for director (and recent Emmy winner) Cary Fukunaga as it was for Matthew McConaughey. That being the case, there’s obvious pressure on the second season of the HBO anthology to deliver quality filmmaking in addition A-list talent.

It sounds like the cast for the second season is nearly in place, and now a new report (via The Hollywood Reporter) suggests that HBO is solidifying the other half of the equation as well.

Several outlets are reporting that Justin Lin, the man who ushered in a renaissance for the “Fast & Furious” series, is in early talks to direct two episodes of the second season, which may star Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch and Elisabeth Moss.

Though we still don’t know much about season two, that last sentence should tell you a few things about the different direction creator Nic Pizzolatto is taking for the new set of episodes is taking. As was previously reported, there will be multiple directors helming episodes this time, as opposed to how Fukunaga directed all eight episodes of the first season. The Hollywood Reporter story mentions conflicting sources, some claiming Lin will direct the first two episode, while others were unclear.

Though Lin is certainly a different choice from Fukunaga, he’s an interesting one nonetheless. The previous “True Detective” director quickly made a name for himself with atmospheric art house movies, while Lin used a mastery of action filmmaking to ...

Can You Identify The TV Character By His Beard?

by 7 mins ago

Nothing communicates that a male character is serious or that he has seen some sh– quite like a beard. That being the case, beards have become a central part of this golden age of television, but beards have played a key role throughout the history of television, often defining the men who wear them.

by 23 mins ago

Last week, when a bunch of character posters for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ featuring the rebel fights dropped, I thought those were pretty cool.

To be fair, they were, but this dark poster featuring Katniss takes the top prize for badassdom.

Here’s The Real Story Behind Stan Lee’s Deleted ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Cameo

by 25 mins ago

One of the stories that came out of James Gunn’s DragonCon appearance was Stan Lee’s original “Guardians of the Galaxy” cameo, but the full explanation of it got lost in the process of reporting it.

Gunn explained to the crowd that Lee was original meant to appear inside one of the Collector’s cases and promptly flick off Groot. Pretty funny, right? Well, when the story hit the web earlier this week, the explanation news sites provided was that Disney wouldn’t allow such a vulgar gesture in their movie.

So it’s another story of the no-fun studio killing what would have been a great joke? Not exactly.

In response to the quickly spreading story, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” director posted this picture to his Instagram account, explaining the real story behind the deleted cameo.

“We shot this footage with a Stan Lee double because Stan wasn’t able to come to the UK at the time. The plan was to shoot Stan in the same lighting when I was back in LA, and we’d digitally replace the double’s head with Stan’s actual head (not quite as difficult as it sounds). Although I thought the cameo was funny, I thought the flipping off joke was too similar to the moment earlier in the film where Quill flips off the Nova Corps, so I excised that part of it immediately. A couple of the guys at Marvel thought Stan Lee in a case was too broad of a joke in general, and that it ...
