NEW YORK CITY — "New York, make some noise! We're 5 Seconds of Summer," the Australian pop-punk band exclaimed as they took the stage Tuesday night, as if anyone in attendance needed the introduction. Their salutation, most likely a habit formed when opening for One Direction on the Take Me Home Tour, is now unnecessary seeing that fans began lining up outside the sold-out Best Buy Theater more than a day before doors even opened.
Amongst these 5SOS enthusiasts was 20-year-old Danielle Denigris who got to the venue at 10 p.m. the night prior.
"I love how energetic they are onstage, and how they have their own sort of sound," she told MTV News. "Waiting in line for 20 hours was definitely worth it because they're one of my favorite bands and I was within two feet of them."
The guys kicked off their set with "Eighteen" and performed a slew of fan-favorites, including all four songs from their new EP, She Looks So Perfect, plus a well-received rendition of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream."
Following the KP cover, the group flirted with the ladies in the audience, comparing their New York fans to a long distance relationship or an online romance. The guys said that finally seeing everyone was "kind of like Tinder — a good version — or 'Catfish' — turned out good."
Fan Paige Baltzersen witnessed the show front and center. The 21-year-old managed to shimmy her way up to the third row.
