‘Transcendence’: The Reviews Are In

It's hard to deny that for his first directorial effort, Christopher Nolan's go-to cinematographer Wally Pfister went big. "Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany and Morgan Freeman, among many others, and attempts to tackle classic sci-fi tropes.

What critics are calling into question, however, is how successful Pfister is at all of this. The reviews for the Oscar winners first film are far from transcendent.

See what the critics are saying about "Transcendence" starring Johnny Depp below.

The Story
"Depp, who essentially Skypes in his performance, plays Dr. Will Caster. He and his researcher wife, Evelyn (Rebecca Hall), have pioneered AI experiments inching the human race ever-closer to 'transcendence,' the ability to imbue a fantastically powerful computer with the personality, memories and foibles of a human being. Then anti-tech terrorists launch a series of attacks, and Dr. Caster is critically injured in an assassination attempt. At death's door he enlists Evelyn and a fellow AI whiz (Paul Bettany) to digitize the good doctor's big brain, thereby "saving" the best of the dying man and allowing him to live on in the form of a machine, all-knowing, all-seeing, thirsty for knowledge and with the attractive, implacable face of Johnny Depp." — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

The Human Element
"The urgency and intelligence of 'Transcendence' isn't artificial. It feels sincerely animated by the frightful questions it poses about computing power and interconnectedness.... The excellent Hall, looking a bit confused by what she's gotten herself into, does her best to emotionally ground Pfister's increasingly unfocused and heavy-handed story." — Jake Coyle, Associated Press

Emma Stone Reveals Her Long List Of Lady Crushes

For an actress who's on everyone's list of favorite ladies to girlcrush on, Emma Stone has quite the robust cadre of crushes herself.

In an interview with Stylist, the "Amazing Spider-Man 2" actress spent practically the entire time name-dropping all the women she admires, from the obvious (Jennifer Lawrence) to the retro (Gilda Radner) to the, er, scary. Who's on Emma's list of ladies she loves?

Melanie Brown, a.k.a. Scary Spice
Any girl who grew up in the '90s has a permanent place in her heart for the Spice Girls, but Emma Stone takes it to a whole new level: after receiving a surprise birthday message from favorite Spice Girl Mel B, the actress reportedly responded by rapping the entirety of Mel's spoken solo from "Wannabe." Color us impressed.

Gilda Radner
Emma Stone wasn't around for Radner's original run on "Saturday Night Live," but her mother — a huge fan — introduced her daughter to the actress and show that Emma says "became my beacon." No wonder she's got such impeccable screen presence, quick wit, and comic timing!

Amy Poehler
Do you love Amy and her "Smart Girls at the Party" project? So does Emma, who cites the actress and comedienne as a favorite for her fresh, authentic efforts to reach out to a female audience.

Watch One Direction Become One In ‘You & I’ Video

After tons of teasers, One Direction finally released their video on Friday (April 18). Niall had promised that they would be "doing something very different" for this clip, and he wasn't kidding.

Looking all grown-up in matching cozy gray sweaters, the guys stroll along the Clevedon Pier outside of Somerset, England, in the clip (in color, not black-and-white as the teasers projected), which was directed by longtime collaborator Ben Winston.

The video begins with Niall walking along the pier wearing that gray sweater and black pants. Wardrobe is a key point in the "You & I" video. As Directioners know, this is a boy band that never wears matching outfits. But we now know that they share the item of clothing because they transform into one another!

As Niall concludes his verse on the romantic Midnight Memories ballad, he suddenly morphs (OMG) into Liam (who's totally rocking that scruffy look, BTW). Payne then transforms into Harry (not wearing that cute hat he was caught sporting on set), who becomes Zayn and, finally, Louis.

The visual makes it seem that each boy-band member is walking along the boardwalk in one continuous shot. The five guys of 1D eventually all meet up toward the end of the clip, rolling around on the boardwalk, playing with balloons, kicking a soccer ball and pretty much being adorable. Take a look at the pretty awesome video for yourself.

‘American Idol’ Recap: One Of The ‘Alabama Three’ Gets Eliminated

The seven contestants were whittled down to six on Thursday night's results show. Here's how things went down.

Big Dexter's Dreams Dashed
Dexter Roberts was sent home Thursday after receiving the lowest number of viewer votes following Wednesday's show, when he performed Luke Bryan's "Muckalee Creek Water." The performance received average marks from the judges, who criticized the 22-year-old for sounding too much like the original version of the song, a criticism frequently lobbied at Roberts over the course of the season.

Roberts sang Montgomery Gentry's "Lucky Man" at the close of the show, after telling host Ryan Seacrest, "I had a great time." There were no tears shed: Roberts is too tough for that.

Roberts may have been done in by his song choice, which in this case was actually C.J. Harris' choice for him. Harry Connick Jr. told Sam Woolf on Wednesday, "familiarity is your friend," referring to doing songs that are big, instantly recognizable hits at this point in the competition. "Muckalee," on the other hand, was never released as a single, and therefore may have been unfamiliar to many viewers.

And then there's the small matter of Roberts' performance with Harris and Jessica Meuse. The three did Lady Antebellum's "Compass," and although the performance was not meant to be judged, not only was it judged ("Guys, it just wasn't good," Connick told the trio), it was even judged by judges from other shows (Demi Lovato of "X Factor" weighed in with her disapproval as well). The harsh comments likely hurt Roberts, who had been in the bottom three once ...

Wu-Tang Affiliate Cuts Off His Penis, RZA Reacts: ‘That Sh– Sounds Mythical’

Since establishing the Wu-Tang Clan in 1993, RZA and his nine-man crew have added dozens of rappers to the family. When it comes to Christ Bearer, the Wu-affiliate who cut off his penis and attempted suicide on Wednesday, the head Clansman has just as many questions as the rest of us.

"It's sad that it's Wu-Tang affiliated. It's like dirty press in a way," RZA told XXLMag.com in an interview on Thursday. "I want to know what the f--- moved him to do those things."

The story broke on Wednesday after TMZ reported that the rapper, born Andre Johnson, was found laying on a North Hollywood sidewalk after he cut off his penis and jumped off a second-floor balcony in a likely suicide attempt.

Originally it was erroneously reported that Johnson went by the rap name Andre Roxx, leaving Wu-experts scratching their heads. He was later identified as Christ Bearer, a member of the California group Northstar, who released their Bobby Digital Presents: Northstar in 2003.

Johnson is now in stable condition according to TMZ, but doctors were unable to reattach his penis.

According to RZA, Christ Bearer was recently released from jail, but he no longer makes music with the rapper. "Christ Bearer is a part of the West Coast Killa Beez, a bunch of young guys that was signed to our company 10 years ago. Wu-Tang, we're from the East Coast. But we did invest in some young guys to try and help any 'hood," he said. "He was a guy from the 'hood that we ...

Austin Mahone Lets Fans In On The Secret: New Song And Track List

The secret is out!

Austin Mahone delivered a big surprise to his Mahomies on Thursday night, unveiling not only the track list for his upcoming release, The Secret, but also another song off the album, "Till I Find You."

When fans pre-ordered the album, which drops May 27, they instantly got Mahone's hit "MMM Yeah" (featuring Pitbull) and "Till I Find You." The upbeat the new track may sound familiar to Stateside fans who heard it played on the radio last fall. The song definitely has a late-'90s early-2000s vibe, and feels like it could have been featured on an 'NSYNC or Backstreet Boys album from back in the day.

A heavy synth beat kicks off the track as Austin alternates between singing and spoken word on the chorus — another reason this could totally be a boy-band jam. Then he goes all "Sherlock Holmes" as he won't rest until he finds the girl who stole his heart.

"Every minute I'm without you, I lose/ 'Cause an angel touched my heart and took my cool/ Every second burns like fire, I'm blue/ I'm doomed till I find you," he sings on the track.

Austin revealed on Twitter that his debut release will feature six songs; plus two bonus tracks, "The One I've Waited For" and "Shadow (Acoustic)."

Noticeably missing from the release, however, is Austin's hit single which he performed at the 2013 Video Music Awards pre-show, as well as that much-buzzed-about collaboration with Justin Bieber.

Shortly after this release comes out, Mahone will hit the road for the MTV Presents Austin ...

Ben Affleck’s Batman Looks ‘Epic,’ But When Will We See Him?

Somewhere, in an undisclosed location, deep in the bowels of his underground lair, director Zack Snyder is staring at Ben Affleck's Batman costume — and you are not.

We'll give you a minute to soak that in.

In an interview with Forbes, the man behind the Batman-fueled "Man of Steel" sequel spoke about the costumes for the upcoming superhero flick, revealing, "I'm actually staring at [a picture of the costumes] right now in my office. And it's just massive on my wall in my office and it's epic, let me tell you! And I'm like, 'God, I want to send this to the Internet immediately.'"

Cue the Internet's collective cries of "Snyder, send us that picture immediately." But don't expect Snyder to comply. The filmmaker said that the first sightings of Batman and Wonder Woman, played by Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot, won't come out until Warner Bros. is good and ready.

"I don't even know the timeline," he said. "Because the movie takes place so far from now, it's hard to know exactly. That all gets tied to marketing and strategies for the movie. It's not just a free-for-all, which I'd love it to be."

Everyone would love for it to be a free-for-all, but for now, the waiting game surrounding the only DC Comics movie on the board continues. For what it's worth, however, Snyder says he's well-aware of how important it is to ace the first live-action meet-up between Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.

"You do sort of sense the weight of the pop culture iconography ...
