SZA Reveals Surprising Inspiration For Glittery ‘Castles’

To hear SZA tell it, if not for the fact that MTV already has a show with the same title, a reality series about her teen years would be called

In August, the cheery 23-year-old with a weakness for chocolate almond milk and gluten-free snacks celebrated signing to top-shelf label Top Dawg Entertainment. But all that fairy dust raining down on her can sometimes have the unintended effect of clouding up her compact. We discovered that when we asked her to break down the lyrics of her glittery "Castles," from her acclaimed spring EP, S.

Looking back on her childhood, SZA said she suffered more than her share of Black Girl Problems: "I don't have a perm, I can't do my makeup the way you do your makeup — or my teeth! I have horse teeth... these things are, like, super awkward about me as a kid with a large head and big hair and big teeth and freckles and all these things. It was just really awkward, and I think it just kinda like stuck with me.

"I never really fit in with what I saw," added SZA, (pronounced Si-zuh), of the predominantly Caucasian neighborhoods in Maplewood, New Jersey, and Missouri, where she grew up in a close-knit, Muslim household.

The opening verse of the Felix Snow-produced "Castles" document those years:
Wish I was prettier a little for ya
Maybe I'll understand when I get older
I just don't get it yet, I'm not finished yet

"My parents were just like, 'What's in your head is way more important,' ...

Nirvana’s ‘Live And Loud’ Concert: The Rehearsal Footage You’ve Never Seen

Clips of Nirvana's legendary performance have been floating around on the Internet nearly as long as there's been an Internet ... though they certainly don't give you a true feel for just how raucous and raw the show at Seattle's Pier 48 truly was.

To rectify that, MTV's full "Live and Loud" concert is being released on September 24, both as a standalone DVD and as part of the deluxe, 20th-anniversary reissue of Nirvana's In Utero album. It gives fans their first chance to witness the full, hour-plus set, not to mention exclusive, never-before-seen rehearsal footage ... all of which captures the band operating at the peak of their powers.

Last week, we unveiled moments of the "Live and Loud" performance, and today, we're bringing you a pair of those rehearsal clips: "Very Ape" and "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter."

Shot on the same day as the show (at least judging by Nirvana's onstage outfits), the footage captures both the band you know, and the one you probably don't. The former is, of course, the surly, downright serious side of the band, and it's on display here: Witness Kurt Cobain's sarcastic jab at the show's director during sound check — "We're just going to stand here until someone tells us to play" — which directly precedes him launching into the curdling opening chords of "Shifter."

But the latter is, too. Turns out, Nirvana weren't all doom and gloom, a fact those who knew them always seem to point out. Cobain spends the first portion of their "Very Ape" rehearsal ...

Emmys 2013: The Biggest Surprises And Snubs

Haim Grow Major ‘Balls’ For Days Are Gone Debut

Their Forever EP helped make them one of the year's most buzzed-about bands and they're MTV's newly minted Artist to Watch, but smart money says you're still not sure how to pronounce Haim. That should all change, though, on September 30.

That's when these 21st-century Sisters With Voices — Danielle, Este and Alana — are set to drop their much-anticipated Polydor/Columbia debut, Days Are Gone.

And when MTV News sat down with them earlier this month, a day after they nearly made ruins of the East Village's Webster Hall with a raging, headlining performance, the trio made it clear why you should know their name. Not least because two years after they played for four people (two of those fans were their parents) at CMJ in New York, they're now selling out venues in the Rotten Apple.

"I think we were just drawing from the last seven years of our lives, but also our entire lives," laughed Este, 27, who was doing her best Stevie Nicks in a wide-brimmed black hat and bewitching black tunic. "I think the record's kind of just the summation of everything we've gone through and everything we've been listening to."

The number seven has special meaning for the girls too. They started writing songs together seven years ago after dissolving Rockinhaim, a cover band they fronted with their parents. And there was a brief (mostly forgettable) foray into pop/rock girl-groupdom for Este and Danielle called the Valli Girls. More lucky #7s: Haim played their first show on July 7, 2007.

By 2008, they'd ...

65th Emmy Awards Highlights: Twerking, ‘Two-Handed’ Thanks And A Big ‘Breaking Bad’ Win

We get it Emmys, we binge watch, we check out "Breaking Bad" on every screen except the old-school one: our phones, computers and ... contact lenses? Okay, maybe 65th annual Emmy Awards host Neil Patrick Harris was exaggerating a bit during his opening monologue. But you can be sure that all those "Bad" fans were multi-screening it on Sunday night (September 22), because with the exception of long-suffering wife Skyler White (Anna Gun) early on, the stars of the nearly wrapped show went home empty handed.

(Spoiler alert: "Bad" won Best Drama Series to cap the night.)

And, let's be honest, if it wasn't for Kevin Spacey's camera swatting and the explosion of WTF's unleashed by the too-bizarre-for-words interpretive dance routine to some of television's most beloved dramas, the rest of the evening was kind of a blur.

So, in case you missed it, or haven't watched it on your watch yet, here are some of our highlights:

Remembering Cory Monteith

On a night filled with tributes to iconic TV actors, Jane Lynch's remembrance
of her late "Glee" co-star Cory Monteith
was one of the most emotional. "From the first time you saw Cory he had a star quality and a genuine sweetness that made it impossible not to fall in love with him," she said. "And millions did fall in love with Cory. And I'm here to say that all that warmth and that charm, that open-hearted quality we loved in Cory was no act. Cory was a beautiful soul."

She also talked about the "rapacious, senseless" destruction brought on by ...

Cory Monteith Emmy Tribute: Jane Lynch Remembers ‘Glee’ Co-Star

There was no song or dance — just a simple, heartfelt speech from "Glee" star Jane Lynch to remember co-star Cory Monteith at Sunday's 65th Emmy Awards.

The actress took to the Nokia Theatre stage to eulogize Monteith, who died on July 13 from a drug overdose at the age of 31.

"It is remarkable and perhaps a little curious how quickly television shows become like families," Lynch said. "This summer, on our show 'Glee,' we suffered a painful death in our family. Cory Monteith played Finn Hudson, a star quarterback-turned-wide-eyed-heartfelt-glee-singer, and from the first time you saw Cory, he had a star quality and a genuine sweetness that made it impossible not to fall in love with him. And millions did fall in love with Cory, and I'm here to say that all that warmth and that charm, that opened-hearted quality that we loved in Cory was no act. Cory was a beautiful soul. He was not perfect, which many of us here tonight can relate to. His death is a tragic reminder of the rapacious, senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction.

"Tonight we remember Cory for all he was, and mourn the loss of all he could have been," Lynch continued. "To a generation that loved Cory so, please know, this wonderful and gifted young man was worthy of your love. And if you were lucky enough to know Cory as we did, and witness firsthand Cory's goofy, breezy sense of humor, his natural instinct for inclusiveness and his unbridled sense of generosity, day in and ...

Emmy Night: 6 Celebrities You Need To Follow During The Show

Liz Lemon and Daenerys Targaryen in the same room? Must be Emmy night! (Or the best fan-fic ever.) And if there's one thing hotter than our favorite small-screen ladies rubbing elbows, it's second-screen viewing (that thing where you watch TV with another electronic device firmly clutched to your bosom for the most pressing of social media needs).

But one doesn't simply follow their Aunt Helen or Uncle Bernie on a night such as this — not with the slew of celebrities who will be revealing all the inside Emmy scoop via Twitter, Instagram and Vine. So without further ado, here is a carefully curated list of six celebrities you need to follow before the 65th annual Emmy Awards air on CBS at 8 p.m. ET.

Neil Patrick Harris, @instagranph on Instagram
Host This is NPH's second time hosting the Emmys (his first since the advent of Instagram, however), and he's already using the site to post cheeky behind-the-scenes images.

Our hope: Sure, Harris might be a smidge too busy on show night to post a ton of exclusive pics from backstage, but would it be too much to ask for a snap in which he mugs with, say, Jon Hamm? It would be legen — wait for it...

Lena Dunham, @lenadunham on Twitter
Nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series
The "Girls" creator may very well be the voice of her generation — on Twitter, at least. Dunham is a prolific poster, from all things political to the pop-cultural, and she doesn't shy away from an overshare. (Something ...
