Vin Diesel’s Radical Idea: Sequels Shouldn’t Suck

In the past few years, Vin Diesel has done something that few A-list actors can claim. In his own way, the "

This week, Diesel is doing something else that isn't too often heard of in Hollywood: reviving a franchise after a pretty disastrous second installment from nine years earlier.

When MTV News sat down with Diesel about "Riddick," how he approached continuing his sci-fi franchise as opposed to his car-racing one. It turns out that his philosophies for the two are strikingly similar. "Although 'Riddick' is sci-fi-fantasy-based to some degree and lends itself a really extensively thought-out universe, I take 'Fast' the same way. I wouldn't have done 'Fast 7' unless we had an idea about 'Fast 8' and '9,' " he said. "Maybe that's a producer trait."

And Diesel's forward-thinking comes from his personal ideas about how audiences watch and enjoy movies, he said.

"I feel like it's in some ways championing the audience that wants good storytelling and wants the stories to evolve and wants the stories to connect and wants the movies to speak to one another," he said. "We're in a gaming society now, so people are conditioned to work a little bit for their story. People like to be rewarded for whatever equity they put into your universe."

Diesel said that making an effort to improve upon a series, rather than resting on brand recognition by the audience is what brings people back and attracts new viewers.

"I don't know if all of Hollywood is aware of this yet, but I think that the audience wants to feel ...

‘RoboCop’ Remake Trailer: Watch Now!

'80s action legend RoboCop is back, but in the new film starring "The Killing" star Joel Kinnaman, he's looking a little more "tactical."

The remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 film starring Peter Weller puts Officer Alex Murphy back in action, and, as we can see in the new trailer, the police officer of the future has gotten a few updates.

After a car bomb effectively ends Officer Murphy's life, a robotics specialist played by Michael Keaton offers him and his wife (Abbie Cornish) an option they didn't know existed. Keaton's character is an advocate for a robotic police force, and in order to sway public opinion on the controversial topic, he suggests putting a man in a machine.

Thus, RoboCop is born with the help of a doctor played by Gary Oldman. The new RoboCop comes with a few new toys and a brand-new look like a combination of Christian Bale's Batman and Iron Man.

One of the main conflicts of the new "RoboCop" is what happens to the Alex Murphy that his wife and son used to know. Keaton's robotic expert informs us that RoboCop's actions have only the illusion of free will, something that he evidently fights over the course of the film.

The new "RoboCop" comes to us from director Jos é Padilha, the Brazilian filmmaker who wowed audiences around the world with the intense action of his "Elite Squad" movies. The first footage for "RoboCop" debuted back in July at San Diego Comic-Con, where it featured a more expanded look at the film and the role of Pat Novak, ...

Robert Pattinson Comes To ‘Life’

Robert Pattinson's had plenty of experience in front of the photographers lenses — both as a model and tabloid staple — but the 27-year-old will step behind the camera for his latest role.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Twilight" star will play magazine photographer Dennis Stock in the upcoming film "Life."

Based on a true story, "Life" centers around the friendship between Stock and actor James Dean, who will be portrayed by "Chronicle" actor Dane DeHaan. The two met when Stock was assigned to snap the up-and-coming actor — producing a series of iconic photographs shortly before Dean broke out with roles in "East of Eden" and "Rebel Without a Cause."

The film is expected to begin production in early 2014, with Anton Corbijn ("The American") directing and Iain Canning and Emile Sherman ("The King's Speech") producing.

"Life" is the latest project added to Pattinson's busy post-"Twilight Saga" slate. He wrapped production on the drama "The Rover" early this year, and just finished shooting "Maps to the Stars," which reunited him with "Cosmopolis" director David Cronenberg. He's also slated for "Mission: Blacklist" and "Queen of the Desert." As to whether the latter project — a Werner Herzog film focusing on the friendship between Gertrude Bell and T.E. Lawrence — will actually come together, that's yet to be seen, according to Pattinson's would-be co-star Naomi Watts.

"We'll wait and see," Watts told MTV News earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. "He's a director I'm completely in awe of. He's a wonderful filmmaker and documentarian. It's a fantastic ...

Katy Perry Reveals ‘Radiant’ Prism Cover: Take A Look!

Hours after she premiered her jungle-themed video for Katy Perry woke up early on Friday (September 6) to appear on "Good Morning America" to debut her Prism album cover.

The simple cover art for the October 22 release features the singer standing in the rainbow-hued sunlight. "I shot it with this amazing New York photographer named Ryan McGinley. And I just wanted it to be pure and radiant and full of light," she said on "GMA" about the image, which she shot in upstate New York.

"The reason why I named the record Prism is because, you know, for a minute I was going through a transitional period in my life. It was a little bit dark, yes, but it was kind of like what they call your return of Saturn; it's when you're about to go into your 30s and you actual have to be an adult," she explained. "But, you know, I embrace the light. I let the light in and it influenced all my songs and then I get to kind of beam the light out to all my fans through these songs. I want to make people happy, and smile."

And if you like what you heard on "Roar," Perry promises there are even more anthems on the album. "Basically, my last record was very thematic, and the theme this record for me is just 'me.' It's kind of like stripped-down, raw, more essential oils of who I am. There's a lot of light and hope and love and storytelling," she shared.

Her appearance on "GMA" ...

Will Vin Diesel’s ‘Riddick’: Will His Third Time Be A Box-Office Charm?

Will the third time prove to be the charm for Vin Diesel's blade-wielding antihero in ? With Diesel back on top and no competition to speak of during the first official box office weekend of the fall, the future looks bright enough for Riddick that he will certainly need his trademark goggles.

Box-office watchers predicted a debut in the neighborhood of $23 million during an otherwise slow weekend. Critics have described "Riddick" as closer in scale and tone to "Pitch Black" than the more grandiose space opera vibe of "Chronicles of Riddick." Reviews are mixed, but they are better than what was written about "Chronicles," which Roger Ebert dismissed as "an exercise in computer-generated effects."

The evolution of this weekend's destined-for-#1 hit runs almost parallel with the arc of Diesel's career. His self-financed short films caught the attention of Steven Spielberg, who gave him a part in "Saving Private Ryan." He did the voice of "The Iron Giant" and co-starred in "Boiler Room," but it was in the small, claustrophobic and violent "Pitch Black" where Diesel stole the show.

Next there was "The Fast and the Furious" and "xXx," catapulting Diesel to the upper echelons of pop culture and giving him carte blanche to take his "Pitch Black" character and build a sci-fi universe around him.

Not unlike "Star Wars" getting officially retitled "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope," the first movie became "The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black" as Diesel enthusiastically told MTV News shortly before he started shooting the big-budget epic. "I'm ecstatic about the size and the ...

‘Riddick’: The Reviews Are In!

After a summer of failed sci-fi blockbusters like "Oblivion" and "After Earth" comes the modestly budgeted a film that makes up for its lack of overwrought CGI with Diesel-powered charisma. The film reunites star Vin Diesel and filmmaker David Twohy after nine years apart following the underperforming "Chronicles of Riddick," but where that film sought to expand the back story of Diesel's Furyan mercenary, "Riddick" focuses on returning the character to his lean and mean roots last seen in 2000's "Pitch Black."

Critics agree that "Riddick" is a B-movie romp at best — but that's not a bad thing. The film's more outlandish elements — like Riddick's pet "dingo-dongo" — may be a bit too much, but the movie's rich supporting cast (including Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista and Karl Urban) and riveting opening act came as a pleasant surprise to most critics. Critics do seem to agree that Vin Diesel turns in a compelling performance light years removed from his "Fast & Furious" alter-ego Dom Toretto, and they praised the film's accessibility — a rare feat for a third film.

Read on for a sample of "Riddick" reviews.

Off To A Great Start "First things first, though — namely a terrific, mostly dialogue-free 20-minute opening during which Riddick acclimates to his new surroundings. Finally, writer-director David Twohy manages a sustained sense of space-operatic poetry that eluded him in the bombastic 'Chronicles' and the series' derivative first installment, 'Pitch Black' (2000). Watching this see-in-the-dark muscleman brooding against gorgeous otherworldly vistas, all while crafting pointy homemade weapons and befriending a scene-stealing CGI canine ...

Is Drake The Next Marvin Gaye?

With the official tracklist for Nothing was the Same revealing song titles like "Tuscan Leather" and "Pound Cake," the world can't wait to hear what Drake has in store on his third album. And since the Toronto rapper has "aspirations of being Marvin Gaye," you'd better believe that this will be a memorable LP — and yes, there will be more singing.

After dropping Take Care, Drake relocated to Los Angeles, where he recorded a bulk of the new album and focused on stepping up his game. "The music that I'm making is more concise, more clear, and I've been able to get my thoughts a lot better on this album," he told MTV News. "Take Care is a great album, but I listened to it and realized where I could do better and I think I've done better on this album."

Drake's most recent single, "Hold On We're Going Home," is a feel-good pop track that he refers to as his "wedding song," and he's warning critics early that there will be more melodic tracks on the album.

"My biggest thing is...if you wanna listen to Drake music for the rest of your life — I welcome it, I want you to listen to it, I want you to be a part of it — just don't ever be surprised when I'm singing or using melody," he said. "I'm doing that on this album. This album is not some straight rap album, I'll never do a straight rap album. That's not how I came into this and that's never ...

Rupert Grint, Justin Bartha Bare Their Butts In ‘CBGB’: Watch An Exclusive Clip!

SAVANNAH, Georgia — Although Rupert Grint's butt took center stage in MTV News' exclusive "CBGB" clip, the former "Harry Potter" star's backend won't be the only tush making a cameo on the silver screen.

When MTV News caught up with Grint on the "CBGB" set, he revealed his co-star Justin Bartha would also be flashing his derriere in the upcoming flick.

"I've got to know Justin quite well," Grint laughed. "Seeing just now his butt cheeks were my canvas and I was drawing stuff on his bare ass cheeks."

In the film, Grint and Bartha, play Dead Boys' bandmates Cheetah Chrome and Stiv Bators, respectively. When the guys find themselves looking for something to do on a road trip, rather than a friendly round of "I Spy" or the "License Plate Game," Bartha's character passes the time by ditching his drawers and bending over.

"Today we are a shooting a scene where the Dead Boys go on the road, drive the Northeast and do a little tour," Bartha explained. "They are in certain states of disarray, trying to stay awake, screwing with each other and [my character]; he had an affinity for mooning people while he was driving."

And although their backsides were a popular topic on the movie's set, it turns out underwear wasn't the only thing these actors had to drop for their "CBGB" roles. Grint said goodbye to his English accent — "it's kind of easy because my character has done so many drugs you can't really understand what he's saying" — while Bartha shed some extra pounds to ...

The word: "We had a blast and recorded some of the best songs we did," longtime producer Brendan O'Brien told Rolling Stone about the session that began in a three-week burst May 2011 and then stalled until last March. O'Brien said songs like "Siren" and "Infallible" are a bit long for pop tunes. But, like everything Eddie Vedder has written over the past two decades, they were tapped out on the singer's battered typewriter.

Hear this: First single, "Mind Your Manners," has PJ back in chugging punk-rock mode and the video from famed photographer Danny Clinch artfully mixes stock footage with live ...
