The Weeknd’s Portishead-Inspired ‘Belong To The World’ Video: Watch Now!

The Weeknd is ready to come out of his shell. With his first official album, Kiss Land, on the way, the Toronto singer/songwriter took major steps and opened up on Monday (July 15) with a new music video and an interview in Complex magazine.

MTV got the go-ahead to premiere Abel's video and song. The track, which samples Portishead's 2008 single "Machine Gun," finds the Weeknd wallowing in self-pity from either a broken heart or a bruised ego — it's a bit unclear. "You taught me how to love when nobody ever could," he sings in his calming falsetto, before coming to the conclusion that the object of his affection could never be his because she belongs "to the world."

The video was directed by Anthony Mandler and is set in Japan, where Abel has seemingly joined the ranks of a military regime who go out for a night on the town. Together, the uniformed soldiers rush to take in a bit of performance art and all admire the woman the Weeknd has had his eye on the whole time.

In his interview with Complex, the mysterious singer revealed that he doesn't know if he's ever suffered heartbreak, even though most of his music centers around the complexities of love. "I hope that I fell in love and I hope that my heart was broken. Because if I didn't, then I don't know what I'm about to go through in the next 20 years of my life," he said before describing his sweetly titled album as a ...

Thom Yorke’s Atoms For Peace Join Growing Army In ‘Rebellion’ Against Spotify

Thom Yorke's side project Atoms for Peace joined a growing list of artists Sunday to take their music off of a streaming music service in what band member/producer Nigel Godrich calls a "small meaningless rebellion."

Godrich took to Twitter this past weekend to announce that he and Yorke have nixed Atoms For Peace's debut album AMOK, Yorke's solo record The Eraser and a self-titled album from Godrich's project Ultraista from the service.

Those albums are also not available on streaming services Rdio and Deezer, although The Eraser is currently up on Rhapsody, as is Ultraista.

"We're off of Spotify. Can't do that no more man," Godrich tweeted. "Small meaningless rebellion....Someone gotta say something. It's bad for new music. The reason is that new artists get paid f**** all with this model... It's an equation that just doesn't work," he said.

Yorke, for his part, retweeted Godrich's tweets and added his own 2 cents via Twitter: "Make no mistake new artists you discover on #Spotify will no [sic] get paid. meanwhile shareholders will shortly being rolling in it. Simples," he said, adding, "For me In Rainbows was a statement of trust. people still value new music ..that's all we'd like from Spotify. don't make us the target," referring to the album that Radiohead released via a pay-want-you-want model in 2007.

The Black Keys' Patrick Carney cited similar reasons in 2011 for not putting the band's latest album El Camino on the service. "If it was fair to the artist, we would be involved in it," Carney told WGRD 97.9. "I imagine if Spotify becomes ...

Jay-Z And Kanye Spent ‘Four Days Arguing’ Over Magna Carta Tracks

Jay-Z and Kanye West took wildly different approaches to their respective solo albums — and we're not just talking about the ways they were marketed, either — so it will probably come as a surprise to learn that, once upon a time, Kanye coveted a pair of Jay's Magna Carta tracks so badly that he was willing to fight for them.

Or at least push for them.

That's according to Jay, who revealed to BBC Radio One host Zane Lowe that, during the making of Watch The Throne, he and 'Ye battled over the fate of a pair of songs — "Oceans" and "Holy Grail" — that would ultimately end up on Magna Carta ... Holy Grail. Seems West thought they were too good to leave on the shelf for the time being.

"We had this whole plan when me and Kanye did [the] Watch The Throne album that we would go right into our solos after that," Jay-Z said. "Soon as I thought we had wrapped up Watch The Throne, I made two records ... I had 'Holy Grail' and 'Oceans'.

'I played those records for Kanye. And he was like, 'No, those have to go on Watch The Throne, so we spent four days arguing about those records," he continued. "I was explaining to him why it wasn't right for this project and I had a whole idea for making this album called Magna Carta ... Holy Grail."

Of course, as you'd probably expect, Kanye wasn't about to give up without a fight. And over the course of ...

‘Despicable Me 2’ Fends Off ‘Grown Ups,’ ‘Pacific Rim’ At Box Office

Giant monsters, giant robots and even Adam Sandler and all of his buddies fell before the might of little yellow minions over the weekend. was the #1 movie in America for a second time, narrowly edging out newcomer and decisively beating big-budget sci-fi action contender which settled for a #3 debut. It was one of the more unpredictable box office races in recent memory, with all three films switching places on the scorecard all weekend long.

In the end, animated sequel "Despicable Me 2" took the #1 spot with an estimated $44.8 million. Featuring the voices of Steve Carell, Miranda Cosgrove, Kristen Wiig and 2012 MTV Movie Awards host Russell Brand, the movie has generated great reviews, big success abroad (it was #1 overseas as well) and managed to earn $229.2 million domestically in just 12 days.

Adam Sandler had never made a sequel before "Grown Ups 2," which reunited him with many of his frequent collaborators from his Happy Madison Productions films, "Saturday Night Live" or both. Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and even Taylor Lautner (!) lent their star power to the comedy, but it was Sandler who had the most on the line. The animated "Hotel Transylvania," featuring the voices of Sandler, James and Spade (among others) made nearly $150 million last year. But Sandler needed a live-action hit on the heels of the subpar box-office business of "Jack and Jill" and "That's My Boy."

Film critics hated "Grown Ups 2" (it sat at a lowly 7 percent on Rotten Tomatoes Read More →

The Wanted Celebrate The Party Life On ‘We Own The Night’

Justin Timberlake may want you to Take Back the Night, but The Wanted really want you to own it. On the season finale of their E! reality show, the cheeky fivesome dropped a teaser for their next single,

The track is an upbeat ditty that encapsulates the party boy reputation the group has acquired since rising up the boy band ranks. On one verse, the guys trade lines, singing, "When my time is over/ Lying in my grave/ Written on my tombstone, I want it to say/ This man was a legend/ A legend of his time/ When he was at a party/ The party never died."

During the chorus, the guys invite everyone to their party. "May your hearts be full like our drinks tonight/ May we sing and dance 'til we lose our minds/ We are only young if we seize the night/ Tonight we own the night."

Shortly after the song teaser premiered, Max George tweeted, "#WeOwnTheNight I think, is my favourite song we've ever done!:)))"

MTV News spoke to the band's manager, Scooter Braun, earlier this month about the track, the next single off the band's 2013 album release. Braun explained why it was the perfect follow-up to

"I love [it]. It is an anthem. It is an anthem for anyone who ever had a drink and a good time. It's a perfect Wanted song, but it's like ... it's them. It's a little British to it," Braun said of the track, slated for release by early August. "It's a ...

Exclusive: Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Gets Baz Luhrmann Review

Jay-Z has a long list of unlikely admirers following the release of his Magna Carta... Holy Grail. Now director Baz Luhrmann joins the likes of Tom Ford and Hov's R-Train homey Ellen Grossman as MCHG cheerleaders.

The famed film director has issued this Magna Carta synopsis to MTV News:

"The thing that has always stuck with me from my knowledge about the birth of hip hop was its natural lack of prejudice toward any genre of music. Having worked with this musician, artist, entrepreneur and 'serial collaborator' for nearly two years, I always remember him telling me that there's only good music and bad music. I heard some remarkable pieces from this new album early on but what is really exceptional about the whole work is its diversity. It's not so much that Jay plays by the rules, he just makes them up as he goes along. The pundits will of course pund but Jay just continues to move creatively and unexpectedly above and beyond it all."

Jay-Z Goes 'H.A.M.' On Twitter, Says Magna Carta May Be Fourth Best LP.

Luhrmann partnered with Hov on "The Great Gatsby" earlier this year, tasking the rap king with putting together a big-time soundtrack for the film. Jay rounded up Beyoncé, will.i.am, Fergie, Lana Del Rey and Jack White. "Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz were two of the first people to ever see a rough cut of the film," Luhrmann told MTV News in May, when he recalled first speaking to Jay about collaborating on the film. "He totally nailed that the ...

President Obama Makes Plea For Peace After George Zimmerman Acquittal

After George Zimmerman was found not guilty
on Saturday in the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin
, President Obama reacted to the verdict with a plea for peace as protests broke out in a number of U.S. cities.

"The death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy. Not just for his family, or for any one community, but for America," the president said in a statement. "I know this case has elicited strong passions. And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son."

Obama went on to make a push for compassion and another plea to stem the tide of gun violence in our nation. "We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this," he said. "As citizens, that's a job for all of us. That's the way to honor Trayvon Martin." The U.S. Justice Department's Civil Rights division said on Sunday that is reopening its probe into whether the shooting of Martin is prosecutable under any federal criminal civil rights statutes.

The verdict sparked spontaneous protests across the nation on Sunday and early Monday (July 15), the majority of which were peaceful.

In Los Angeles, some protesters hurled rocks, flashlight batteries and chunks of concrete at police, who responded by shooting bean bags and making at least nine arrests early Monday morning, according ...

Ed Sheeran Knows Justin Bieber’s Mop-Bucket ‘Struggle’

Ed Sheeran has had his share of fame. Although the fiery-haired British singer doesn't dish out Justin Bieber-levels of tabloid fodder, he still has to deal with the celebrity gossip here and there.

Ed was rumored to be romantically involved with Selena Gomez a few weeks ago. When MTV News asked him about the rumors, he merely brushed them off by bringing up her current boyfriend.

"Well she's dating Bieber, isn't she? And he's pissing in mop buckets," Sheeran said.

The mop-bucket incident? Ed's referring to the video tape of Bieber that surfaced online last week and subsequently went viral. The clip showed the 19-year-old urinating in a mop bucket at a restaurant, spraying cleaner on a photo of former President Bill Clinton and yelling "f--- Bill Clinton" at the picture.

But these reckless actions don't bother Sheeran one bit. In fact, he's got Bieber's back, having gone through a similar situation on tour.

Justin Bieber's Mom 'Not Naïve' About Son's Questionable Choices.

"I pissed in bin once," he admitted. "On a bus. Really late at night after a festival. So I can appreciate Bieber's struggle."

However, when it comes to bashing Bill, well, that's another story.

"I do like Bill Clinton though," the + singer said. "I met Bill Clinton; he's a very nice guy. Yeah, Bill Clinton's cool. But that's kind of like the equivalent of me sh--ing in a shoebox and saying I didn't like the Queen."

Not so fast, Sheeran. Remember, Bieber hails from the Great White North, so there's a better parallel out there — like peeing in the ...
