Ellie Goulding Wanted ‘Tessellate’ To Show A ‘Different’ Side Of Her

Ellie Goulding may have released her cover of Alt-J's "Tessellate" relatively quietly on Tuesday morning, but the indie blogosphere instantly exploded in loud and affectionate applause. Praised for its sexy and silky sound, Goulding's version takes the British band's An Awesome Wave hit and turns it on its indie-rock head — and shows off a never-before-heard side of the Halcyon singer.

And when MTV News caught up with Goulding at this year's Hangout Festival, she made it clear that "different" is exactly what she was going for.

"I'm really excited about it because it's not what you'd expect," Goulding told us on the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama. "It's a completely different version of the song. ... It's not what you'd expect from me."

Unexpected, indeed. Her take on "Tessellate" abandons the get-up-and-go of "Anything Could Happen" and the steady beat of "Lights" and slows it down to focus on her sultry falsetto. And when sexy saxophone croons along with her, Goulding's pleas to "let's tessellate" become just that much more persuasive.

She admitted that she listened to the track "constantly" when An Awesome Wave was first released last May. But apart from its pure intricacy and ability, in her opinion, to "be literally in any kind of context," there may be one line in particular line that connected her to the song: "Triangles are my favorite shape/ Three points where two lines meet/ Toe to toe, back to back, let's go my love."

Golding is well known for her knack for triangles — just look at her arm ...

The Wanted Still Have A ‘Few Questions’ For One Direction

The Wanted and One Direction beef may have quieted down on Twitter, but that doesn't mean that it's over quite yet. When the soon-to-be reality stars of The Wanted stopped by "Chelsea Lately," they weighed in on the current state of affairs between the boy bands.

"We don't listen to their music," Jay McGuiness said of One Direction. Host Chelsea Handler bluntly asked if the guys hated 1D, to which Siva Kaneswaran added, "Hate is a strong word."

But, it was Max George who had the lengthiest explanation about what exactly has transpired between the two bands, who have frequently traded barbs on Twitter in the months since their feud first made headlines. It kicked off last November when George and 1D's Zayn Malik got into a heated debate, insulting one another (the word chlamydia was mentioned during the initial back-and-forth) on the site.

"There seems to be an issue," George said, with Siva pointing specifically to him. "It's not just me. It's mainly me, but it's not all me. I think there's a few questions that need to be asked of them, of a couple of them. I'm suspicious of one of his reasons."

Wondering who or what exactly George might be referring to? Well, so was a perplexed McGuiness. He said, "I'm a bit confused now, actually."

While George never went into specifics, he did get the last word on the matter: "No, I think it's him that's confused one of those guys. But they're all right. Definitely a couple of them are really sound ...

Justin Bieber’s Troubles Stem From Being ‘A Teenager’

It seems like every move Justin Bieber makes lately gets him in hot water. From a verbal spat with his neighbor to being called out by former NFL player Keyshawn Johnson for speeding in a residential community, Bieber has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

But if anyone knows what the 19-year-old is going through, it's his mentor, Usher, who also grew up in the spotlight, releasing his first single at age 15. On Wednesday (May 29), the "Voice" coach stopped by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and came to the pop star's defense.

"Keyword, you started with, 'young,' " Usher said when asked about Justin. "I think all of us, in some ways, have humble beginnings that pan out to be incredible and we hope that in his transition — as friends and family who have helped him be who he is — that he will continue to just mature."

Usher went on to tell Ellen that he's in constant contact with Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun and when he "can be of help," he reaches out to Justin directly. The singer also acknowledged that life in the spotlight these days is a lot different than what he had to deal with when he was starting out, and that makes it more difficult to make mistakes.

"In this days' age of social media, there's no privacy, and that kind of trial-and-elimination period is kind of done in front of a camera," Usher said. "It's been done and many, many other celebrities are a product of it and some come ...

Daft Punk Dance To #1 For Career-Best Debut

All those months of teasers paid off for Daft Punk. The anonymous French duo will land the biggest debut of their career, first #1 album
and second-best debut of the year on the Billboard 200 next week (behind Justin Timberlake's 968,000 for The 20/20 Experience) when their fourth studio album, Random Access Memories, tops the tally with sales of 339,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

The final number topped early predictions, which had Memories moving around 300,000 copies. It also beat their previous best U.S. chart showing (#4) for the 2010 soundtrack to "TRON: Legacy, " which moved 70,000 units in its debut. According to Billboard, 65 percent of DP's sales were from downloads (221,000), which also gives them the second-biggest digital week of the year behind Timberlake's 452,000.

The album's first single,
is also their top-charting single to date, peaking at #10 so far, with more than 350,000 downloads, plus another 710,000 in England. It is also the fastest-selling album in the U.K. so far this year. According to Spotify, one in five U.S. users listened to all of Memories in its first week on the service and every track on the disc was streamed at least 500,000 times in the first week on Spotify in the U.S.

Just behind the #2 debut from Darius Rucker's True Believers (83,000), indie rock sad sacks the National hit a new high with Trouble Will Find Me (#3, 75,000) and rapper French Montana landed at #4 with his major-label debut, Excuse My French (56,000).

‘Transformers 4’: Meet The New Autobots

Transformers fans assumed that 2011's "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" was the end of an era. The film seemed to be the finale of Michael Bay's reign as robot king, but it turns out that the blockbuster director still has at least one more round of mayhem in him. And thus "Transformers 4" was born.

The film starts shooting this summer, and Paramount has wasted no time in getting fans hyped up for the next installment in the billion-dollar franchise by releasing photos of two new Autobots. The first is a 1,200-horsepower Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse, which sources have pegged as the Autobot swordsman Drift. The other is a C7 Corvette Stingray that is most likely the Autobot Slingshot.

Drift made his debut just a few years ago within the pages of IDW Publishing's Transformers comics. Initially loyal to Megatron, the robot formerly known as Deadlock changed his ways to fight alongside the good guys as the sword-slinging Drift. If this Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse is, in fact, Drift, then the character has undergone a makeover, taking the character away from his signature white paint job with red accents.

The C7 Corvette Stingray could be the vehicle form of a G1 Transformer from the '80s cartoon, although longtime fans wouldn't initially know it. Slingshot's been a member of the Autobot combiner team known as the Aerialbots, and therefore an airplane, for his entire existence. But the abrasive Autobot was left out of the Aerialbots when they appeared in 2009's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," and it looks ...

What Brought Ke$ha And will.i.am Together? ‘Tequila’

Ke$ha knew she had found a kindred spirit in the Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am. So, when she was in the studio working on her latest Warrior single, "Crazy Kids," she wanted to get the song's co-writer to jump on the track, mostly because he provided the perfect verse for the celebratory jam.

"He and I wrote the song together, so it seemed like a natural thing for him to be on it, and his verse is really funny; he talks about boobies. Anytime somebody says anything about boobies, it's great — love it," the queen crazy kid herself told MTV News on Tuesday night when she sat down to premiere the visual for her latest Warrior single during

Sure, will doesn't physically appear in the video; instead a hologram of his face in an astronaut suit does while K parties with her real-life pet cat and bearded men. But Ke$ha and will's friendship had been solidified in the real world long before she shot the clip, when they were each working side by side in the studio.

"We were recording next door to each other, and we played this fun game that was, 'We're gonna play our music louder than the other one.' So by the end of the week, we both had just taken over the studio and we would go back and forth and take shots with each other and run around," she recalled. "He's like totally crazy also. And, you know, I feel like we just really vibed with each other. He's really positive ...

‘The Voice’ Recap: Adam Levine Left With One Contestant After Eliminations

On Tuesday night's episode of "The Voice," eight became six as the remaining contestants discovered who would be moving on during the show's live eliminations.

Before saying goodbye to two singers, viewers said hello to Sheryl Crow as she treated fans to her newest single "Easy." The nine-time Grammy Award-winning singer has shared the stage with everyone from the Rolling Stones to Michael Jackson but it was Blake Shelton's team that joined her during this very special performance of the song.

Dueling Duets
And the collaborations didn't end there. Between results, opponents were paired up for an evening full of duets. It all kicked off with Michelle Chamuel and Judith Hill's rendition of Calvin Harris and Florence Welch's "Sweet Nothing" and was followed by other noteworthy performances including the Swon Brothers and Sasha Allen's cover of Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson's "Don't You Wanna Stay" and Danielle Bradbery and Sarah Simmons' performance of Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years."

Four Eyes on the Prize
After rocking Michelle Chamuel's trademark black-rimmed glasses during Monday evening's live rounds, Usher paid homage to his last contestant on Tuesday by donning the specs again. And it wasn't just her coach who was getting in on the action either. After learning Chamuel would be moving on in the competition -- "It's crazy! I'm just very, very grateful! Thank you so much," she said -- Social Media Correspondent Christina Milian shouted out Usher's innovative hashtag (#4eyesontheprize) and then slipped on a similar pair of bifocals.

Voice Confessionals
Results weren't the only thing revealed Tuesday night. All four judges and ...

Amanda Bynes Fires Up Twitter Beefs With Chrissy Teigen, Courtney Love

Amanda Bynes has a burgeoning side career as a Twitter warrior. The troubled actress, who is awaiting a July court date in connection with last week's alleged bong-tossing incident
in New York, fired up two fresh Twitter beefs on Tuesday after receiving unsolicited advice from a model and one-time rock icon.

"The fact that Amanda Bynes has any 'support' to retweet is really unsettling ... Support people with mental illness, yes. But don't condone/enable scary and poor behavior," wrote Sports Illustrated model Chrissy Teigen.

Bynes, who has thrown Twitter jabs at everyone from Rihanna
to Jenny McCarthy, Jay-Z and Drake, did not take that advice kindly, hitting back, "Ur not a pretty model compared to me. I signed to Ford models @ age 13. I don't look up to u beauty wise. I'm far prettier than u! I'm offended that you're saying I have a mental illness when I show no sign of it, but thankfully not one man that wants me wants you and you are an old ugly model compared to me!"

And she wasn't done. Adding, " You look 45!," Bynes said to the model, who, like her, is 27. "You're not pretty so I'm not intimidated by you! I think you're jealous that you're just an ugly model whos career is uninspiring! I don't respect you! You're no beauty queen! I'm a beauty queen!" Teigen declined to be dragged into a fight, though, writing, "Nope. Not going to indulge. Wish the best for her, truly," asking her followers to do ...
