Jay-Z Or Jazz? ‘Great Gatsby’ Has Both, Baz Luhrmann Says

Wondering how director Baz Luhrmann recruited Jay-Z to create much of the music for his adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's ? The filmmaker told MTV News it was a super early screening of the film that got the rapper into an empire state of mind.

"Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz were two of the first people to see a rough cut of the film," Luhrmann revealed. "Jay watched it, and he was fantastic. He and Swizz were talking. I'm like, 'What are they talking about?' And at the end, [Jay-Z] said, 'This story is not about how Jay Gatsby made his money; it's is he a good person or not.'

"He totally nailed that the book was aspirational," Luhrmann observed. "That the book was really about, if you've got a cause, you can move towards a green light. That you don't reach it isn't the point; that you aspire is."

Luhrmann explained that he wanted the film to update the energy that Fitzgerald's novel captured by placing its story within the context of "the jazz age."

"I showed [Jay-Z] my little video of how we had to find a way of making the jazz, blend it between hip-hop and all kinds of music," he said. "And I was about halfway through it, and Jay [seemed really into it]. And I said, 'Maybe you'd be interested?' And he looked up like, 'What are you talking about interested? We've got to do this!' "

‘Gravity’ Trailer: Watch George Clooney Get Lost In Space

A sequel to "Up in the Air"? Not quite. But George Clooney is dealing with some pretty big issues while hovering in the skies above us in the new film

The first teaser trailer for the film, which premiered Thursday night, offers audiences their first look at the science-fiction opus, written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who previously offered a singular portrait of a possible future in "Children of Men" and helmed "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," widely regarded as the best installment in the "Harry Potter" film series.

In the clip, astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) and Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) marvel at the sunrise — from space. Wearing space suits, they float in the blackness of the universe 372 miles above the Earth. But when their shuttle collides with some debris, the ship is destroyed, forcing the two of them to fight for survival in an environment they cannot control, and they have no place to land. Scrambling to hold onto one another, and then to any solid object that might provide a respite from the nothingness of zero gravity, they fight to find a way to contact Earth and make it safely home.

"Gravity" promises to be one of the biggest moviegoing events of 2013 and has been compared to no less than "Avatar" in terms of its ambition and spectacular visual effects. (Clooney has already described it as visually stunning, which we suppose means that audiences won't just be watching the blackness of space, two white suits and a spinning blue marble the entire time.)

‘American Idol’: Who Made It To The Finale?

Candice Glover and Kree Harrison will compete for the title of during next week's finale, as Angie Miller was sent home on Thursday's (May 9) "Idol" results episode.

Miller, the spunky 18-year-old from Beverly, Massachusetts, was voted off the show following her performance on Wednesday's episode. She sang three songs — Elton John's "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word," Pink's "Try" and Emeli Sande's "Maybe" — and received strong marks for all three from the judges. But she was criticized for not performing "Sorry" at the piano, which was considered by the panel to be her strong suit. Mentor Jimmy Iovine, who chose the song for her, said, "That was so set up to give her a moment. She chose not to play the piano; to me, that was a big mistake. Although it was great, it could have been 'That Moment.' "

Glover was the first one given the news that she'd be in the final. When Harrison was told she made it over Miller, a look of shock came over her face, as well as the faces of several of the judges.

Miller, heavily choked up by tears, sang Colton Dixon's "Never Gone" as her goodbye song.

Glover and Harrison will battle it out next Wednesday, with a winner to be crowned on Thursday's finale. Iovine was so confident Glover would be headed to the finals that he said of the 23-year-old, "if she goes home, I'm going with her."

‘Kardashians’ Star Scott Disick Puts Vinny’s Uncle Nino ‘In His Place’

In an all-new episode of tonight (May 9) at 10p.m. on MTV, "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star Scott Disick leaves a lasting impression on Vinny Guadagnino and his family.

"Out of all the guests ... the nuttiest was Scott Disick," the "Jersey Shore" star's Uncle Nino told MTV News. "He gave me some sh--, then I gave it right back to him."

During their dinner together, Vinny's mom Paola said not only does Kourtney's baby daddy put Nino "in his place," but that he really showed an appreciation for a particular part of their meal as well. "He kept asking for more wine," she laughed.

"He drank, like, four or five bottles of wine," Nino confirmed.

Vinny Answers Your Questions About Celebs, Girls And Uncle Nino.

Although he downed nearly a half-dozen jugs of Uncle Nino's vino, during a sneak peek of tonight's show, you learn Disick is all about the give-and-take. When Vinny confesses that he'd "like to be a little more GQ," Disick lends Vinny some extra duds he just happens to have laying around his Rolls Royce.

"I love this; I look like Scott Disick, everybody!" Vinny laughed as he strutted around his bedroom wearing Disick's powder-pink pants and periwinkle sweater wrapped around his shoulders. "I think I look like a tool bag a little bit."

And if you didn't think things could get any more fun, think again. Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice also swings by the house for dinner, and she also makes an extra-special trip to Staten Island's biggest (and only) amusement park.

As I Lay Dying’s Tim Lambesis Pleads Not Guilty In Murder-For-Hire Plot

During his arraignment hearing Thursday (May 9), As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis pleaded not guilty to a charge of solicitation of murder, after authorities claimed he tried to hire an undercover detective to kill his estranged wife. His bail was set at $3 million.

Lambesis was arrested Tuesday by the San Diego Sheriff's Department, when law enforcement officials say they learned of his alleged involvement in the murder-for-hire plot.

According to San Diego's CBS 8 News, prosecutors in the case initially asked that Lambesis' bail be set at $20 million, saying the singer was both a flight risk and a danger to the public. The alleged target of the plot, Lambesis' wife Meggan, told the judge she feared for her life and was unsure if there were additional hits put out on her.

Lambesis' attorney disputed those claims, saying his client did not intend to harm anyone and calling the case the result of a "scumbag snitch setup."

Prosecutors said Lambesis gave an undercover detective cash to pay for the hit, as well as photos of his wife, gate codes to her residence and dates of when he wanted her to be killed. They added that he even told the detective to kill Meggan while he was with their adopted children, so he could have an alibi.

Lambesis wore a blue prison jumpsuit to the hearing. His As I Lay Dying bandmates, who sent their thoughts to Lambesis in a statement released Wednesday night, were present in the courtroom. "Our thoughts right now are with Tim, his ...

Randy Jackson Leaving ‘American Idol’ After 12 Seasons

Just a day after reports revealed that Mariah Carey is no longer the musician/manager's star client, Randy Jackson announced Thursday (May 9) that he is leaving "American Idol."

A judge on the reality competition for 12 seasons, Jackson is the only "American Idol" panelist to be on the show since its inception. His departure paves the way for at least one new judge — if not more — if Carey, Nicki Minaj or Keith Urban decide not to return as well.

Jackson was mum after news broke that Carey signed with Red Light Management, although reports suggested that they parted ways because of schedules that were "too hectic." But Jackson issued a statement Thursday putting to rest the speculation about whether he would remain on the show for a 13th season.

"Yo! Yo! Yo! To put all of the speculation to rest, after 12 years of judging on 'American Idol' I have decided it is time to leave after this season," Jackson said in the statement. "I am very proud of how we forever changed television and the music industry. It's been a life-changing opportunity but I am looking forward to focusing on my company Dream Merchant 21 and other business ventures."

'American Idol' Report Card: Tears And Broadway Cheers For Candice Glover.

Prior to his stint on "American Idol," Jackson was a successful musician and producer, having worked with Jon Bon Jovi, Michael Bolton, George Michael, Stevie Nicks, Bruce Springsteen, Roger Waters and more. Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo Face Off In ‘Now You See Me’ Exclusive Clip

"First rule of magic? Always be the smartest guy in the room."

Magicians aren't supposed to reveal how they pull off their tricks, but Michael Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) offers this little nugget of wisdom to one particularly disgruntled patron in a new scene from "Now You See Me," which debuted exclusively on MTV Thursday (May 9).

Directed by Louis Leterrier ("Clash of the Titans"), "Now You See Me" follows Atlas and his merry band of illusionists as they stage bank heists while entertaining their audiences. Although they commit their crimes in full view of thousands, the authorities, led by Dylan Hobbs (Mark Ruffalo), are at a loss to figure out how they're pulling them off.

"I can maintain my resolve much longer than you can maintain that phony arrogance," Hobbs tells Atlas. "And the instant that you show even the slightest crack in that smug façade, I'll be there."

Given his pedigree for sleight of hand, Hobbs admits he's remarkably eager to have Hobbs try to keep tabs on him and his crew. "Let me warn you: I want you to follow," Atlas insists. "Because no matter what you think you know, we will always be one step, three steps, seven steps ahead of you."

Watch the rest of the clip to see how the face-off between Atlas and Hobbs comes to its conclusion -- with one in handcuffs and the other struggling to figure out what to do next.

Kris Kross’ Chris Kelly Called ‘True Friend’ During Tearful Funeral

The "homegoing" service for late Kris Kross rapper Chris Kelly
took place in Atlanta on Thursday afternoon (May 9). The MC was honored during a ceremony at a Baptist church in his hometown that was attended by mentor Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat and members of Xscape, as well as partner in rhyme Chris Smith, who gave a tearful, moving eulogy.

In a tribute to Kelly, 34, both Dupri and Da Brat reportedly wore their pants backwards as they entered the church in a nod to Kris Kross' iconic stage fashion during their "Jump" heyday in the 1990s. The pastor of the service described it as a "commencement ceremony" for Kelly, who he said was graduating to his eternal resting place.

Smith had trouble composing himself at first, but said peace came over him on Thursday morning when he woke up. "I know I can't fill Chris' shoes, but I'm always gonna be here," he told Kelly's mother, Donna Kelly Pratte. "We had too many memories so I'm not gonna try and go through the 30 years that we kicked it." But Smith did recall the last time the duo were on stage in February at the So So Def anniversary concert. Just seconds before they were to perform, he said, Kelly ran over to his side of the stage and said, "Stay focused. I'm like, 'what are you doing man! The curtain's about to come up!'"

He described a chill Kelly calmly walking back to his side of the stage and, his voice cracking said, "That's the Chris I always ...
