Everyone has a friend with bad gas. He’s a good guy, but you never want to get stuck on a long car ride with him and he’s not the guy you introduce to your sister. According to a new study from the University of Exeter in United Kingdom (so you know it’s legit), the smell of farts might actually be beneficial to your health. One day you may actually fight with your other friends on who gets the privilege of sharing a hotel room with Stinky Ted.
We don’t pretend to understand the science behind how this works, but apparently there is a compound found in human farts and rotten eggs that might decrease the cell damage responsible in part for cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart attacks, dementia and more.
Researchers have created AP39 (fake farts?) and already it’s showing promise. Professor Matt Whiteman writes, “Our results indicate that if stressed cells are treated with AP39, mitochondria are protected and cells stay alive.” That’s good news. You want to keep your cells alive.
Dr. Mark Wood added “Although hydrogen sulfide is well known as a pungent, foul-smelling gas in rotten eggs and flatulence, it is naturally produced in the body and could in fact be a healthcare hero with significant implications for future therapies for a variety of diseases.”
Wait, that guy’s name is Dr. Wood and he studies farts? Sorry, just had to point that out.
