Channing Tatum Gives Us An Exclusive Sneak Peek At ‘The Book of Life’

by 1 hour ago

MTV has your first look at your next big (animated) adventure: “The Book of Life.”

We (and Diego Luna and Channing Tatum) rolled out the first sneak peek at the family film during the mtvU Fandom Awards at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday (July 27), but in case you missed it (or in case you want to watch it over and over again), here’s some brand new footage from the animated adventure comedy:

The story, which director Jorge Gutierrez describes as one man’s journey to be “reunited with the love of his life,” finds Manolo (voiced by Luna) traveling through magical realms to return to his Maria (Zoe Saldana), who is also being pursed by Joaquin (Tatum).

“We’re here tonight because behind each fandom there’s a great story,” Luna said before presenting the clip.

“And Comic-Con is the place where these stories about love, adventure, and the impossible come to life,” Tatum continued, before jumping right in to footage from the fantastical world of “Book of Life.”

Check out the footage above for some can’t miss scenes from the film, but especially for Tatum’s jealousy towards his character for having a rad mustache.

“The Book of Life” hits theaters on October 17.

Zachary Quinto Explains Why He Can’t Return To ‘Heroes’

by 2 hours ago

When “Heroes: Reborn” was announced last spring we were excited, but also extremely curious as to which of the original series’ stars would return. Would Hiro swing his sword once again? Would Hayden Panettiere get another chance to play the cheerleader saving the world? Would Zachary Quinto return as the evil, power-stealing Sylar?

Err, well, sounds like a pretty definitive “no” for that last one.

Quinto himself stopped by MTV News HQ at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, and decided to clarify his stance on “Heroes” once and for all.

“Tim [Kring] and I have actually been in touch,” he explained, referring to the show’s producer. “I love Tim Kring, I love what he does. His imagination, his mind, and his ability to execute it are all so impressive. He brought me in early, you know? He really changed my whole life in so many ways. I feel so excited for them, that they’re doing it again.”

Sounds great! However, Quinto’s excitement does not, in this case, translate into appearing in the project.

“He has new, creative ideas that he wants to put out there, and so do I, in other ways,” he continued. “We have connected about that. I wish them so much good fortune with it, I can’t wait to watch it, but I don’t think I’m going to be a part of it. We’re all on different paths, and that path got me to where I am, but I can’t just go back to it because of that. And I ...

Emma Stone And 10 Other Celebs Who Could Literally Marry You

by 1 min ago

Over this past weekend, Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo were officially married!

What great news. We’re so happy for them. And their wedding sounded like a blast, too — it took place in Cabo San Lucas, Stevie Nicks played, Jason Segel was there, Jonah Hill was the minister…

Wait, slow down for a second. WHAT?! You’re telling me that the subject of this world-class exorcism married two gorgeous celebrities in front of the eyes of God?

Well, sort of. The wedding also featured a blessing by Prinsloo’s father, who is actually a minister in his everyday life. Jonah was just there to make jokes, but still — he’s far from being the only celeb to officially officiate a wedding. Here’s the short list of who you should call, should you ever need a super famous person to preside over your nuptials:

1. Emma Stone

Monica Schipper/FilmMagic

Stone officiated the wedding of her publicist, Holly Shakoor, to “Gangster Squad” director Ruben Fleischer in 2012.

2. Benedict Cumberbatch

Sherlock stumbled a bit during John Watson’s best man speech, but Cumberbatch himself (probably, we assume) killed it when he married his pals Seth Cummings and Rob Rinder in Ibiza last summer.

3. Ian McKellan

In addition to having the most adorable social media friendship of all time, McKellan and Patrick Stewart also have that special bond two men get when the one who plays ...

‘The Purge’ And 6 More Horrifying Movie Holidays

by 32 mins ago

Everybody loves nationally recognized holidays. They’re amazing! You can sleep in, you don’t have to go to work unless you’re a waiter or public transportation operator or a whole bunch of other professions besides “office worker,” and most importantly, most of them come with an excuse to eat a whole lot of food. Heaven.

But do you know which holidays aren’t so great, Bob? Movie holidays. Specifically ones like “Purge Day” from “The Purge” and its sequel, “The Purge: Anarchy.” (But wasn’t the first one kind of anarchy-ish too, since everybody let loose and was killing each other and what not? Eh, who am I to ask questions.)

Still, Purge Day is far from being the only horrible movie holiday offender. Below are a whole bunch of cinematic nationally recognized holidays that make going to work seem super awesome:

1. Purge Day, “The Purge” (And “The Purge: Anarchy”)

Somehow, some way, somebody decided that fully legalizing all crime – INCLUDING MURDER — for one night a year would solve all of Amerikuh’s problems. This sucks in so many ways.

First of all, if I’m going to enjoy a day off, hunkering in my bed watching reruns of “Doctor Who” on Netflix, I’d like to do it without the constant threat of getting murdered by that girl who threatened me on Twitter when I said I didn’t love the latest episode of “Scandal,” thank you very much.

But more importantly, I feel really sorry for the petty criminals who want to celebrate Purge ...

‘Doctor Who’ Gets The LEGO Treatment, Because Everything IS Awesome

by 9 mins ago

Fantastic! Allons-y! Geronimo! Everything is awesome! I’m … so, so sorry?

Well, most of the famous “Doctor Who” (and “The LEGO Movie”) sayings apply to this block-for-block recreation of our favorite moments from the “Doctor Who” 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor.”

YouTube user bookshelfproductions painstakingly reenacted the coolest parts of the 2013 hit, with actual audio from Matt Smith, David Tennant, Billie Piper, John Hurt, Jenna Coleman, and Christopher Eccleston JUST KIDDING accompanying the brick work. Everything about this is wonderful — Smith and Tennant’s Lego-selves are a revelation — but it’s worth it just to see the Lego TARDIS alone.

“Doctor Who” returns for its eighth series on August 23.

Anna Kendrick Publicly Questions Her Own Hotness, Again

by 29 mins ago

When coming up with adjectives to describe Anna Kendrick, many words pop up. Words like funny. Talented. Down-to-earth. Smart. Occasionally self-deprecating. And also, of course, gorgeous.

Obviously, like she said in her hilarious beer commercial, Kendrick is more of a “hottest girl in your improv class” type of gorgeous than a four leaf clover, Kate Upton gorgeous, but still — it’s there. Kendrick is an undeniably attractive woman. If she was in my high school class, she’d likely have made the short list for Most Attractive.

Which is why it’s kind of strange (and maybe even a little frustrating) to hear that Kendrick doesn’t see herself that way — or, more accurately, is probably told that she shouldn’t see herself that way — even if she does clarify that she doesn’t give a you-know-what.

“The thing is, my appearance — that’s never been my moneymaker,” Kendrick told Glamour. “I’m fine being small. I’m fine being all the things I am. And I’m happy I’m not supposed to be on the 50 Most Beautiful list all the time, because that would be super f—ing stressful.”

Well, okay. On the one hand, it’s obviously great to hear that she is happy with who she is and how she looks, and it does sound very stressful to have your appearance be your moneymaker. But on the other, since when does being a young, slim white woman make you an outlier when it comes to Hollywood’s beauty standards?

Is ‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Anti-Gun? We Asked The Experts

by 6 mins ago

The critics and the people have spoken, and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is a bona fide summer success.

The sequel to the 2011 James Franco reboot “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” is a stunning achievement for motion capture acting and definitely an action-heavy blockbuster, but much of the buzz surrounding the film has largely centered around how refreshingly profound and thoughtful it is — particularly on the issue of violence. Gun violence, to be exact. (Spoilers ahead.)

“You’ll hear instances where actors have said, ‘I won’t appear in a movie poster with guns,’ or directors will say, ‘I will never put a gun in my movie,’ but there certainly aren’t many examples where [blockbusters] tackle this head on,” Dan Gross, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, told MTV News over the phone. “In this case, it very compellingly shows that before the gun was introduced, a fight was a fight. And now, when a gun is introduced, it has a much greater chance at turning lethal.”

Pretty crazy for a franchise that launched starring former N.R.A. spokesman Charlton Heston, no?

Backing up a bit, the film takes place ten years after the Simian Flu from “Rise” wiped out most of humanity. Both the surviving humans and the newly intelligent apes have managed to build small, peaceful communities with their own established rules, with “no killing” being a pretty essential rule for all of them. Eventually the communities intersect, with key members from the human ...

The 11 Grossest GIFS From ‘The Strain’ Will Make You Lose Your Lunch

by 5 mins ago

Guillermo Del Toro’s vampire horror series “The Strainfinally premiered on July 13, and while we’re definitely into it — and the next three episodes FX sent out — we’re still not over how incredibly gross it is.

Effectively using body horror unlike anything we’ve ever seen on television, “The Strain” focuses on a group of New Yorkers on various sides of a potentially apocalyptic vampire virus. Said virus enters the city via plane — or, more specifically via the ancient evil vampire called The Master that flew on said plane, killing all of its passengers minus four.

Well, they’re kind of dead, anyway — and the four survivors are looking pretttttty rough. It’s up to a CDC workaholic (“House of Cards” season one standout Corey Stoll) and a Holocaust survivor Van Helsing type (Red Wedding planner David Bradley) to save the day, though by the end of episode one, they certainly haven’t gotten very far.

Anyway, “The Strain” certainly made quite an impression, largely due to the effectively grotesque horror of Del Toro’s various monsters, including those little parasite worms that eat blood and burrow themselves in eyeballs (click if you dare). We’ll spare you the toss-your-cookies reaction from that particular image, but you’re on your own when it comes to the 11 grossest moments from “The Strain” premiere:

1. First, Walder Frey from “Game of Thrones” started talking to a heart in a jar.

A heart in a jar with parasitic worms in it is just what ...

Keri Russell Likes ‘The Americans’ Better Than ‘Felicity’

by 13 mins ago

With reporting by Josh Horowitz

Keri Russell might have recently collaborated with one of the directors behind the show that launched her career, but that doesn’t mean that “Felicity” — or even “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” which was helmed by the show’s creator Matt Reeves — was her favorite work experience.

“[With] ‘Felicity’ I was the main person,” she told MTV News. “That was a real grind. I think because Matt and J.J. [Abrams] had never [produced a show] before, and we were creating a really cinematic show for the olden days… we worked a lot of hours.”

Instead, Russell says that it’s her current, critically acclaimed FX drama “The Americans” that’s fueling her creative fire — and giving her a chance to catch up on some family time.

“What I love about ‘The Americans’ is the 13 episodes, which means I can work really hard for four and a half months, and then be with my kids, or go do a movie, do a play,” she continued, adding that the material itself is also a reason to celebrate (we agree).

“Just the quality of working on cable right now is just the best place to work,” she said. “Especially being an actress — it’s tough right now in movies. There are a few, a handful, that I think are great movies. If you win the lottery and get to be the girl in that movie, you have maybe one good scene. You’re usually someone’s girlfriend, or a mom, ...

9 Times Ariana Grande Was The Biggest ‘Big Brother’ Fangirl Of Them All

by 17 mins ago

As season 16 of “Big Brother” officially heats up (crazy Devin rants, anyone?) the so-called “super fans” of the series are in heaven.

In case you weren’t aware, one of the most insane and fascinating things about “Big Brother” has always been the fact that live feeds of the contestants are available 24/7. So, in addition to the three nights a week of condensed televised footage, you can watch live as players eat, drink, strategize, and most importantly, have sex. It’s an all-encompassing, addicting, and extremely time-consuming hobby, that CBS’ favorite super fans look forward to all year.

This year, however, following the live feeds — whether you’re watching the footage itself, or one of the many “Big Brother” Twitter accounts that posts live updates all day long — has gotten about ten zillion times more interesting, because Ariana Grande is doing it right there with you. Of course it’s because her brother Frankie Grande is on the show, but we’re still shocked at the level of commitment this very busy pop star has shown to watching the show and interacting with its fans.

We’re also kind of touched at how sweet Ari is to her big brother as he navigates the treacherous waters of “Big Brother,” so behold, the nine times Ariana was the #BB16 fangirl of our dreams:

1. When She Started Running A “Big Brother” Twitter Account
This takes conviction.

2. When She Dove Into The Live Feeds
Live feeds are not for the faint of heart.

3. When She Took Some ...
