‘Pretty Little Liars’ Recap: Everything We Learned In ‘EscApe From New York’

by 06/10/14

Was that worth the wait, or what? “Pretty Little Liars” returned for its fifth season premiere on June 10, delivering a whopper of an episode that included a brand new murder, the resolution of an old one, and Broadway, baby! Let’s dig in to the night’s biggest reveals:

Baby’s First Murder
Well, that was quite the shock!

Our main gal Aria Montgomery — she of the hair streaks and forbidden love — became a murderer (in self defense!) at the end of the night, after it was revealed that Shana was A… well, one of the A’s, anyway. She was A-ish.

How did this all go down? Simple. After the ambulance came to collect Ezra, the Liars split up to coax A out of the hospital. Spencer, Hanna, and Emily went first and scouted him or her out in the lobby, then Aria and Alison arrived and somehow had the front desk call Alison over the loudspeaker. A perked up at this and followed Ali out of the hospital, with the non-Aria girls running behind to keep an eye on their friend/hopefully ambush A.

But of course, A was ten steps ahead of them, and when the ladies surrounded him in an abandoned playground, everything went straight to hell. “Are you sure that’s A?” a male voiced hissed. “Maybe I’m A… or maybe it’s one of them!”

At this, approximately 30 jerks dressed in black and donning “V For Vendetta”-ish masks closed in on the Liars, but thankfully they weren’t violent — they pretty much just danced ...

‘Pretty Little Liars’ Will Skip College, And 7 Other Truths We Learned On Reddit

by 06/10/14

Her claim to fame is a television show centered on lies and the attractive lying liars who tell them, but “Pretty Little Liars” show runner Marlene King was chock full of truth bombs during her Reddit AMA on Monday, June 9.

King hit the interwebs to answer questions on everything from Uber A (who will probably not be revealed this season) to her favorite dessert (key lime pie), though the biggest shocker of the night probably came when King said that the show would be skipping the characters’ college years.

“There will be a time jump,” she said. “It may be on the TV show, or the movies we are starting to talk about, but there will be a time jump. We will ‘jump’ college.”

Say whaaaat?!

Yeah, that’s the look of four ladies who just learned that television does not care about their higher education. But of course, that’s not the only major revelAtion King made during her AMA — these seven little tidbits of information would even make A lose his (her?) mind:

Time is speeding up…
“Time goes VERY SLOWLY in Rosewood. It’s almost like a magical element to us, because we want the show to go on for a few more seasons. We move time slowly, but after the Christmas episode time will speed up a little bit and we will get to spring of Senior year more quickly than we’ve dealt with this Fall.”

… Though there may be an end in sight!

“I did not plan on ...

The 11 Craziest ‘Harry Potter’ Book Covers From Around The World

by 06/09/14

The “Harry Potter” books are (rightfully) beloved all around the world, and this world is a strange and marvelous place — filled with beautifully unique cultures, all with a slightly different take on art. Therefore, some of the Potter book covers are… different… than the Scholastic ones we’re used to seeing here in the U.S. Some are childlike and cartoonish, some are avant-garde, and some are just downright terrifying, yet still really, really fun to look at. Let’s hop on our brooms and take a trip around the world, shall we?

Harry Potter and the Giant Rat Hat.

This Italian cover is undoubtedly one of the strangest you will ever see. If there was a chapter in “Sorcerer’s Stone” where Harry forlornly played chess with a giant rat wearing a handkerchief while also wearing a giant rat hat himself, then I must have missed it. Which is a bummer, because that sounds pretty trippy.

Are Zac Efron And ‘Catfish’ Star Max Joseph Teaming Up For A New Flick?

by 06/06/14

Today in “parents just don’t understand” news: Zac Efron is in negotiations to play an EDM noob in “Catfish” sleuth Max Joseph‘s Untitled DJ project, reports The Wrap.

This will be Joseph’s first time helming a feature-length film, but he’s directed over 60 short films and commercials — one of them being “DFA Records: Too Old to Be New, Too New to Be Classic,” a short doc on the record label that houses major electronic dance acts like LCD Soundsystem, Holy Ghost! and Hot Chip. So basically, he’s familiar with the subject.

As for Efron, he’s fresh off his seamless transition into more adult roles after a well-received performance in “Neighbors,” and we can definitely see him as a struggling DJ-wannabe navigating the treacherous waters of the EDM world. He just has that look — you know, the look of that guy in the neon tank-top (or no shirt at all) with a matching glow stick and sunglasses/sweatband set at the Electric Daisy Carnival.

Meaghan Oppenheimer co-wrote the film with Joseph, and Working Title is set to produce. Shooting is slated to begin next month in Los Angeles, where Joseph is currently auditioning young actors for supporting roles.

‘Edge Of Tomorrow’: The Reviews Are In

by 06/06/14

There seems to be a popular consensus that the trailers for “Edge of Tomorrow” are a bit confusing. It’s evident that Tom Cruise is experiencing some sort of “Groundhog Day” scenario as he fights aliens on a beach with Emily Blunt in a giant battle suit, but the hows and whys of the situation are a bit… unclear.

What is clear, however, is that the majority of critics seem to think that the time travel movie is definitely worth your time. See below for the evidence.

A Return To Form
“This song-and-dance rapidly shifts your understanding of whom Mr. Cruise is playing and how. He’s funny! And watching him glide through the opening of ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ — a suggestion of ‘Jerry Maguire’ edging his smile — it’s hard not to think, Where has this guy been? It’s been years since Mr. Cruise felt this light on screen.” — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

Keeps It Fresh
“‘Edge of Tomorrow’s’ continual repetition may sound boring, but Liman and his team have worked out multiple permutations and iterations to get us into each new recurrence, and both stars are strong actors fully committed to their roles.” — Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

A Perfect Balance
“As light as ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ is on its feet, it still manages to balance that fleetness with visceral, impressively staged battle sequences. Borrowing nomenclature and visual language from classic World War II films, the film re-imagines D-Day as a high-tech aerial assault on Normandy, with terrifying ...

‘Orange Is The New Black’: 9 Burning Questions We Need Answered In Season 2

by 06/05/14

It’s here! It’s finally here!

It’s been eleven months since we’ve watched a new episode of “Orange is the New Black” — though it may be more recent for some of you, due to the whole word of mouth thing — so please understand why we’re foaming at the mouth for the midnight, June 6 release of Season 2. Last season ended with a major cliffhanger that will surely be answered in the premiere, but we have nine other, burning brighter than Red’s hair questions that must be addressed. The people demand answers!

1. Will Piper pay the price?
Okay, so everyone knows by now that Taryn Manning AKA Pennsatucky has been bumped up to regular status for Season 2, so she’s not dead. Also, if she was dead, Piper would be spending way more than a year and a half in prison.

Still, there’s no denying that Piper’s beatdown will have serious consequences. We saw what mere hours in the SHU did to Dandelion last year, so we’re thinking we might see a changed woman when she gets back. Will she go bananas? Will Larry try to intervene? Will that wide-eyed naivete finally go away? Will Pennsatucky get some new teeth? So many questions!

2. What will happen to Alex?

It’s been confirmed that Laura Prepon is in only in a handful of the new episodes, and we know that Alex is eons away from her release date. What is she going to do to get herself out of the picture? Sky’s the ...

‘True Blood’: 7 Reasons Why You Have To Watch The Final Season

by 06/05/14

“True Blood” has been one of summer’s greatest, goriest, not-so-guilty pleasures for six years, but now it’s time for the vampire saga to come to an end. I’ve screened the first two (crazy awesome) episodes, and have complied seven spoiler-free things you need to know if you’re thinking about tuning in.

1. If you missed a season or two, you can jump back in.

The premise is pretty simple — at the end of Season 6, some evil humans poisoned the True Blood with a deadly, fatal, and highly contagious disease called Hep V. None of our favorite vamps were infected, but this still left them starving without a non-human food supply. Mayor Sam Merlotte found a peaceful solution in each vampire pairing up with their own personal human blood bank (the humans received protection against the infected in return), but the season finale found hoards of the infected closing in on Merlotte’s Bellefleur’s Bar and Grill, where everyone in Bon Temps was having a massive party.

So now, we have an apocalyptic, us-against-them situation on our hands, with humans and vampires (and the other supes, natch) needing to band together to fight their common enemy — which, of course, is not going to be easy…

2. It’s a bloodbath.
… because this enemy is a nightmare! The Hep V infected vamps are slowing dying, and while they’re not exactly zombies — their brains are still fully functioning — they certainly eat like them. They feed much more frequently and savagely, which we ...

‘Arrow’ Star Katie Cassidy Gives Us The ‘Star Wars’ Crossover We Never Knew We Wanted

by 06/04/14

Many things come to mind whilst staring at this photo of Katie Cassidy and her new friend Chewbacca.

Chewbaccaaaa

First and foremost, they’re rocking the exact same shades of ombre, and therefore probably share a stylist. Then there’s the fact that Chewie looks about as high as Laurel Lance did during at least two thirds of the second season of “Arrow,” so maybe that’s why he just blue himself.

But third, and certainly most exciting for genre crossover enthusiasts and fan fiction writers everywhere, is that this is the DC/”Star Wars” crossover we’ve all been waiting for (even if we never knew it). We only wish that Patton Oswalt’s filibustering character from “Parks and Recreation” was a real live person, because he deserves to look at this photo.

17 GIFs That Sum Up Our Obsession With ‘Orange Is The New Black’

by 06/04/14

In case you have been living under a rock or for some unholy reason do not have Netflix, know that the de facto breakout hit of 2013, “Orange is the New Black,” will return on Friday (June 6) with 13 brand new episodes. We’re excited. You should be too. Here’s why:

1. It understands the healing power of tacos.

2. It brings up issues most of us have never thought about, like the devastating concept of having a child in prison.

3. It shows women bonding and working out their issues instead of being horrible to each other.

4. It has a complex, often-unlikable audience surrogate, who occasionally has moments of brilliance that make us take a good, hard look at ourselves.

5. Try as they may, no one has ever used a magic chicken as a metaphor for the necessity of hope so effectively. NO ONE.

6. It gives us a lot of laughs via Crazy Eyes, but also makes her a human being instead of a punch line. (At least after episode three.)

7. Can you imagine a world without TASYTEE?

8. Seriously, though.

9. Have you ever seen a friendship like this one on TV before? No, you have not.

10. Speaking of friendship, it also teaches us how to effectively get rid of our enemies.

11. It features a real transgendered actress instead of a dude in a wig. And she is spectacular.

12. It reintroduced the ...
