Why Shailene Woodley’s Biggest Role Made Her Swear Off Playing Teenagers

by 32 mins ago

Despite the fact that Shailene Woodley goes completely nude and seduces a 45-year-old man in her new film “White Bird in a Blizzard,” it’s still teen blockbusters like “Divergent” and last summer’s sleeper hit “The Fault in Our Stars” that have made the actress a household name.

However, according to Woodley herself, that youthful, girl-next-door identity is about the change — largely due to her own reaction to watching “Fault.”

“We filmed it in August, and I saw the rough cut in December,” she told MTV News. “I started crying, and it wasn’t because of the movie… it was because I realized — and it hit me so hard — I was like, ‘Wow, this is such a bittersweet, beautiful moment, because Fault is the last movie I will ever play a teenager in.’”

Now of course, Woodley’s frequently makeup-free, youthful face could definitely still land her another “Fault”-esque role, but it isn’t the cruel process of physical aging that’s keeping her away from high school hallways.

“I can’t empathize with the process that a teenager mentally and emotionally goes through now like I could even last August, just simply from my own phases and my own personal life,” she continued. “It was a really neat, amazing moment, and also a totally terrifying moment of like, ‘Wow, I have to be held accountable for playing my own age for the first time.’”

This also rules Woodley out for a plethora of YA blockbuster franchises — or any blockbuster franchises, for that matter. (Sorry, ...

11 Minimalist Horror Movie Posters That Will Terrify You, Minimally

by 12 mins ago

artwork by Shannon Baek, Quinlan Omahne, and Dahee Yang.

Horror movie posters like “Candyman” and “Evil Dead 2″ tend to favor the gory and/or terrifying over anything vaguely resembling minimalism — a photo of a bee flying into someone’s eye is bound to grab one’s attention, after all. However, this series of MTV News-created minimalist horror movie posters proves that, when it comes to these 11 iconic films, the devil is not in the details.

The ‘American Horror Story’ Creators Are Making Another Murder Show

by 16 mins ago

Does the murder in “American Horror Story: Freak Show” take itself just a little too seriously for your liking? Is its upcoming spin-off, “American Crime Story” just not what you’re looking for when it comes to televised entertainment?

Well, then you’re in luck, because the folks that created “AHS” and “Glee” are back, this time for a “genre-bending comedy-horror” anthology series called “Scream Queens,” which is set to air on Fox in the fall of 2015. “Queens” will be produced by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, and the show — which has already received a full season, 15-episode order — will focus on a college campus for its first season. Also, it will apparently star two women every year, so suck on that, “True Detective.”

“I knew I wanted to work with Brad and Ian again on something comedic, and we are having a blast writing ‘Scream Queens,’” Murphy said in Fox’s release. “We hope to create a whole new genre — comedy-horror — and the idea is for every season to revolve around two female leads. We’ve already begun a nationwide search for those women, as well as 10 other supporting roles, and we’re very grateful to [Fox execs] Dana [Walden] and Gary [Newman] for their enthusiastic support.”

Really, the only question now is which role in “Scream Queens” will go to Lea Michele.

Disney Characters On Instagram Are Your Social Media Nightmare

by 13 mins ago

Social media apps like Instagram are a tricky beast. In the “plus” column, it’s never been easier to keep up with your friends while expertly balancing a busy work-life schedule, and for pop culture lovers, everything from Batmobile pics to the latest Miley tattoo have been revealed on Insta, thus bringing us closer to the action than ever.

However, these apps have also brought about an epidemic of over-sharing and narcissism, and with excessive hash-taggers and those folks who find it necessary to Snapchat every single second of their latest EDM concert running rampant, social media can be a scary place. Italian digital illustrator Simona Bonafini is well aware of this fact, which is why her “Selfie Fables” series — which depicts Disney characters as Instagram users — is so spot-on.

Basically, these Disney heroes can all be broken down into an Instagram user you already know (and can’t stand):

Ariel as “teen girl who is hot, knows it, and would really like it if you commented with your pervy thoughts.”

The Evil Queen as “your aunt/older cousin/friend’s mom who is arguably having a very public midlife crisis.”

This Heartbreaking Story About ‘SNL’ Reveals An Ugly Truth About Racism

by 14 mins ago

Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller’s “Live From New York: An Uncensored History of ‘Saturday Night Live,’ as Told By Its Stars, Writers and Guests” initially hit the shelves way back in 2003, but a recent update to cover this past decade has exposed the behind-the-scenes history to a bevy of new readers — and surprisingly, it’s not the material covering Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, or Jimmy Fallon that has “SNL” fans reeling.

Instead, it’s an old passage on an ugly truth that alerted some redditors to the fact that white privilege affects everyone, even famous actors like Eddie Murphy.

“I fly to New York to meet with Eddie, who’s a baby, like nineteen, whatever, and we come down onto Fifth Avenue and he said, ‘You have to get the cab, because they won’t stop for me,’” John Landis (“National Lampoon’s Animal House,” “Beverly Hills Cop III”) said.

“We always had to go down and get cabs for him at two in the morning, because no cab drivers would stop for a young black man,” “SNL” writer Margaret Oberman continued. “Not even him.”

A black man being unable to hitch a ride is certainly nothing new — heck, “Gary Coleman” even sings about it in the musical “Avenue Q” — but Murphy’s story seemed to resonate with readers because the actor was already famous from “SNL” and “48 Hours,” yet he still had to rely on white coworkers to hail him a ride home. White privilege, ladies and ...

Joel Edgerton Describes The Real-Life Event That Inspired ‘Felony’

by 30 mins ago

With additional reporting by Josh Horowitz

In Joel Edgerton and Jai Courtney’s new thriller “Felony” – now in theaters – the two Aussies play cops with extremely varying levels of integrity. However, although some devastating events involving the police have taken front and center in the media as of late, Edgerton — who also wrote and produced the film — says that his inspiration was something much more personal.

“When I was a kid, I was in a department store — like a big Westfield — and I always saw anyone with a uniform, and I thought, ‘they’re just good people,’ ” Edgerton told MTV News. “Because they’re wearing a uniform, they have authority. I saw this security guard, [and thought] ‘oh, he’s a good person.’ ”

Then, as you may have guessed by now, things quickly took a sharp left turn.

“This woman walked by, and he turned to a security guard and he said something really lascivious about this woman,” Edgerton continued. “I was like, [gasps.] It didn’t make sense to me! It’s impossible, he’s a good person, he has to do everything right.”

Edgerton added that portraying men (and women) in uniform being “normal humans that make mistakes” was the driving force of the film, but he also told MTV News about a few other movies that served as his inspiration for “Felony.”

“Movies like ‘Cop Land’ [inspired 'Felony']… ‘Cop Land’ is a great movie,” Edgerton added. “[Movies] where you do get a look inside the police force, and you ...

The 17 Weirdest Movie Scenes To Watch With Your Parents

by 5 mins ago

There’s nothing quite like a family movie night. Between mom’s homemade popcorn and getting the whole family together, the nostalgic pleasure of taking in some cinematic magic from the comfort of one’s home seriously can’t be beat.

BUT — and this is a major “but” — nothing can put a dent in family night quite like an awkward (usually sexual) scene creeping in to ruin the fun. From heartwarming love stories that took a terrible turn to porno films disguised as innocent cartoons, here are 17 scenes we watched with our parents that we really, really wish we hadn’t:

17. Jack Draws Rose, “Titanic”

Watching this with one’s dad as an 11-year-old… Yeah. Traumatizing.

16. Edward And Bella Break The Bed, “Twilight: Breaking Dawn”

Awkward only because of how much mom enjoyed it.

15. Ben Affleck Puts Animal Crackers In Liv Tyler’s Lady Parts, “Armageddon”

Weird, but also hilarious. How is that remotely sexual?

14. The Bikini, “Varsity Blues”

A movie about high school football. What could possibly go wrong?

13. Veronica Strips For Billy, “Billy Madison”

Yeeesh. This was a lot for a 9-year-old watching a PG-13.

12. Anything With Fat Bastard, “Austin Powers”

Same goes for the never-ending dick joke.

11. The Third Nipple, “Mallrats”

Boys will be boys?

10. Mila Pleasures Natalie, “Black Swan”

Even in adulthood, this never ceases to be awkward.

9. Buffalo Bill’s First Dance, “Silence Of The Lambs”

Where did the pee-pee go?

8. Cameron Gets Her Hair Did, “There’s Something About Mary”

‘The Book Of Life’: What Do Critics Say About Channing Tatum’s New Film?

by 4 mins ago

After headlining the decidedly un-PG flick “22 Jump Street” last June, Channing Tatum is back with an animated love story, “The Book of Life,” that might prove to be a better viewing option for his one-year-old daughter.

However, is the Jorge Gutierrez-directed, Guillermo del Toro-produced musical comedy worth the price of admission? Find out what the critics have to say below:

A Love Story
“Manolo (voiced by Diego Luna) yearns to be a musician, but hails from a legendary line of bullfighters. He’s in love with the independent Maria (Zoe Saldana), but so is Joaquin (Channing Tatum), a soldier obsessed with his medals (and his mustache). Above it all, La Muerte and Xibalba, skeletal spirits from the afterlife, wager over who will win Maria’s heart.

“For a kiddie flick, ‘The Book of Life’ pushes boundaries, as the topic of death is undeniably front and center. But like Mexico’s Day of the Dead, the movie enjoyably, and successfully, mixes the macabre with the celebratory.” — Jordan Hoffman, Daily News

A Visual Delight
“Produced by Guillermo del Toro, ‘The Book of Life’ is a winsome ode to Mexico’s Day of the Dead. It’s bolstered by a giddy voice cast (including Diego Luna and Zoe Saldana) that elevates the formulaic plot about a hero’s quest for true love, and it’s that rare gem of a ‘toon that delights both child and adult. Overflowing with hyperactive charm and a spectacular sea of colors, it showcases some of the most breathtaking animation we’ve seen this decade.” — ...
