Relive Miley Cyrus And Britney Spears’ First Time… On ‘TRL’

by 8 mins ago

It took an artist as big (yet so tiny in stature!) as Ariana Grande to resurrect “TRL,” the beloved MTV variety show that started out in 1998, which was a time when you actually had to wait for Carson Daly to cue up a music video, as opposed to now when you can just lazily tell Siri to do it for you.

It’s been six years since “TRL” last aired, and while the show’s premise was video countdowns, it was so much more than just counting down and watching videos. Back before Instagram and Twitter and Snapchat, you didn’t know what your faves had for breakfast, and the word selfie was just the word self with an “ie” on it (and no one used it! Those were SUCH better days). If you wanted face time (which came before FaceTime) with your faves, you had to be home at 4pm ET so you could see them live and in person. Interviews with and appearances by celebrities were special events, not daily occurrences. We had to hope, wait, and watch.

Careers were launched on the iconic “TRL” stage, which was really a platform for Standom. So before Ariana takes the stage six years after the final show, let’s take a look back at “TRL” first of some of our favorite leading ladies of pop and “TRL” mainstays.

The teeny tiny BB Britney Spears made her TRL debut on December 12, 1998. She was just 17 and SUCH a wee thing! ...

Watch Ed Sheeran Get A Tattoo Like A Champ And Pretend It Doesn’t Hurt

by 06/11/14

Ed Sheeran is running out of real estate. Not the LEGO house or the Craftsman kind — he recently bought his own place in London, which mean he may finally put an end to that spree of couch-crashing.

He’s running out of dermatological space for his growing tattoo collection. He’s got hundreds of tattoos, from cats to flowers to a Heinz ketchup logo and a Matisse tattoo in honor of his mum. (Swoon city!) Oh, and, ::shameless plug:: if you’re curious about what all of Ed’s tattoos mean, you can check out our interactive Ed Sheeran tattoo map.

But a lack of virgin skin isn’t keeping him from adding to his personal collection. That saying about tattoos being addictive is obviously true in Ed’s case, since he let the cameras roll during his “Nine Days And Nights of Ed Sheeran” documentary when he had celebrity tattoo artist Kevin Paul (who’s also inked up Harry Styles) add some fresh ink to his arm.

Get the story behind all of Ed Sheeran’s tattoos in our tat map!

Kevin’s needle buzzes away while Ed plays a few demos and takes the pain like a pro, stopping to flinch, breaking the fourth wall, and uttering one of the realest lines of the documentary: “You can just edit this and make me look like a badass, right?”

Right. Er… Okay, we didn’t, but only because he looked so earnestly adorable asking.

20 NORMAL & NOT NORMAL Things We Learned About Ed Sheeran In His ‘Nine Days And Nights’ Documentary

by 06/11/14

Even if you’re a licensed, certified Sheerio with a PhD.-level knowledge of Edward Christopher Sheeran (like, you already knew that he loves Damien Rice, hates kale, and speaks German he speaks German and hates kale), there’s a fair chance you may have learned something new about the Bard of Britain (sorry, Shakespeare — you’ve been replaced) in his “Nine Days And Nights Of Ed Sheeran” MTV documentary. Some of these things (loathing of kale, chilling in PJ pants) are normal, while others — coming of age near a castle, posting up at Rick Rubin’s place, and receiving a needlepoint handcrafted by your bestie, Taylor Swift — are decidedly not normal.

Check out 20 normal and not-normal things we learned about Ed Sheeran in his “Nine Days And Nights Of Ed Sheeran” MTV documentary:

1.) He grew up near a castle: NOT NORMAL!

Taylor Swift Made Ed Sheeran A Drake Needlepoint, Because Sometimes Famous BFFs Make Each Other Drake Crafts

by 06/10/14

Taylor Swift: Not just good at singing. She’s also a dedicated needlesmith, as evidenced by this rustic, somewhat rudimentary yet conceptually adorable besties needlepoint she made for Ed Sheeran. The craft features the oft-quoted Drake maxim “Started From the Bottom.”

Sheeran did what any best friend of Taylor Swift — who’s featured in the new MTV documentary a href=”http://www.mtv.com/shows/nine-days-and-nights-of-ed-sheeran/”>”9 Days and Nights of Ed Sheeran” — would do upon receiving such a sweet souvenir of bestie-dom: He promptly framed and hung the thoughtful handicraft, which also features the popular Internet first-world idiom “the struggle is real,” on his wall. He shows it off in the can’t-miss doc about his charmed and surreal life.

NeedleWork_edtaylor

Taylor’s handiwork is just one of the many personal moments Ed shares in “9 Days And Nights,” premiering tonight (June 10) at 11/10c p.m. on MTV.

And this further proves my overlapping theories that a.) Given her propensity for jam-making and baking, Taylor could easily change careers and become a home-ec teacher, and b.) Ed and Taylor’s friendship is the cutest thing since Meredith and Graham.

Kim And Kanye Celebrate Their Love By Blatantly Making Out, And Then Yawning At Someone Else’s Fancy Wedding

by 06/02/14

Kim and Kanye are still knee-deep (assuming that knee is dressed in leather jogging pants) in the honeymoon phase of their honeymoon. The newly married couple — and obvious Eastern European history buffs — are on the former Czechoslovakia leg of their post-marital Euro trip, making a stop at the wedding of Kanye’s stylist at a famous castle. That castle is now even more famous since North West’s daddy was photographed inspecting wife Kim’s tongue with his very own tongue while dressed in matchy-matchy, post-Memorial Day whites on a Louis XIV couch.

Let this be a strident message to all you skeptics, haters, and bitter Bettys — Kim and Kanye’s love: still going strong after 10 days!

Wait. Your Pregnant Friends On Facebook Can Get You Pregnant?

by 05/31/14

Why is everyone on Facebook having babies? Well, partially because everyone on Facebook is having babies, which is a logical leap I took based on a study called “Does Fertility Behavior Spread among Friends?,” from the June issue of The American Sociological Review, which is one of my favorite things to read when I’m not busy hiding everyone on Facebook with babies.

While Facebook can’t literally get you pregnant, unless you’re extremely flexible and extremely kinky (no judgments!), the study — based on data from 1,700 American women who were tracked from the age of at least 15 through approximately age 30 — focused on female high school friends in early adulthood and surmised that fertility is affected not only by individual decisions and choices but by the influence of our social network, including, specifically, high school friends.

The study’s co-author Nicoletta Balbo, a postdoctoral fellow at the Carlo F. Dondena Centre for Research on Social Dynamics at Bocconi University in Italy, explains:

“People compare themselves to their friends. Being surrounded by friends who are new parents makes people feel pressure to have kids as well.”

pregnantfacebook

Basically, your high school friends start popping out babies and posting photos on Facebook, and before you know it, FOMO strikes again, your bestie’s fetus is BFFs with your fetus, and a few months later, you’re cleaning up poo at 2 a.m., and it ain’t yours.

And on that note, a gentle reminder that birth control only works when you a.) ...

New Clippers Owner Steve Ballmer Has A Rich History Of Turnin’ The F–k Up

by 05/30/14

Meet the new owner of the L.A. Clippers. His name is Steve Ballmer. He was the CEO of Microsoft for over a decade. He’s worth, well, a lot more than Yammer and all of the Surface Pro 3s combined, and he’s now Blake Griffin’s boss after Richard Sterling’s astonishing implosion.

steveballmer
Aside from being really really rich, Steve Ballmer also has a rich history of refusing to turn down when the camera’s turned on. Throughout his tenure at Microsoft, Ballmer became known for poppin’ AWF at Microsoft company meetings, conferences and interviews, and making “motivational” speeches and entrances so grandiose (and so sweaty) they made a 20-minute Kanye rant look like a pastoral painting. It’s all very Howard Dean meets “Silicon Valley” meets “Winnebago Man” meets Beavis except way TF richer.

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite videos of Steve Ballmer refusing to turn down for anything — especially not for developers. Enjoy!

#tbt: Kathleen Hanna’s Empowering Beyonce Hater-Blocker Advice Is Still The Best

by 05/29/14

In May 2012, The Julie Ruin, Le Tigre and Bikini Kill founder Kathleen Hanna — a personal artistic and feminist role model of mine and of many women and men who grew up admiring her work as a writer, singer-songwriter, activists, and one of the pioneers of the Riot grrrl movement (please watch the excellent documentary The Punk Singer about her) — sat down with writer Melissa Febos, author of Whip Smart, for an artist-on-artist conversation about the process of creating art, social responsibility, feminism and the relationships between women at BOMB Magazine.

Sure, the conversation is two years old, which is a million years old in Internet years, and I know no one wants to read long-anything anymore because we’re all too busy refreshing and scrolling through Instagram until our eyes start to cross (I… am… guilty, too…), but the piece has seen a resurgence online this week, and I highly encourage you to read the entire piece. (Also, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is 45 years old, but you should still read that, too.) Print it out if you have to. I can wait.

Okay, if you’re too busy and need to get to the Beyonce of it, know that Kathleen Hanna packaged up criticism of women and their art, bodies, and basic existence and then told haters to throw all that hate in a box to the left.

Here’s the brilliant quote:

“Beyoncé isn’t Beyoncé because ...
