Nicholas Cage Wore A Shirt With His Own Face On It And All Was Right With The World

by 06/08/14

The thing we all have to understand about Nicolas Cage, actor, director, intergalactic man of mystery and producer extraordinaire: he makes his own rules. He does not give a flying pancake what the rest of us think.

All of this is evidenced in this beautiful photograph of him and Andrew Dice Clay backstage at a Guns N’ Roses concert.

That might be the most ’80s sentence that ever happened, you guys.

All at once a Nouveau Shaman, the father of Kal-El (a.k.a. Superman’s birth name that he shares with Cage’s youngest son), and an avant garde expressionist, Cage embodied all of this with this get-up that we’re classifying as Cage Distilled: Nutter Purple Cowboy Edition.

There’s a lot going on (and it is glorious): cowboy hat, several beaded necklaces with a matching bracelet, a Barney-esque purple blazer, fringed black jeans, mirrored aviators, Andrew Dice Clay, a cane — is that faux gun-holster belt? — several statement cocktail rings, a goblet-esque glass of wine, and the true pièce de résistance: a shirt with what can only be described as a Rage Face rendering of Cage’s own mug.

It is a thing of beauty. Bask in its glory in full, again:

Mr Nicolas Cage and Mr Andrew Dice Clay

Ride on, Nic Cage. Ride on.

‘Orphan Black’ Just Exploded Television’s Gender Norms With A New Clone

by 06/08/14

So. There’s a new clone on Orphan Black. And while that prospect was always sort of an inevitable one, we bet you didn’t see this particular clone comin’. Because the latest clone isn’t like the others: Tony is trans.

BBC America

Yep: the sestrahood like no other just compounded on that slogan of theirs and upped the sexual and gender fluidity ante on a show that’s already done so much to champion and pioneer the way people think about sex and gender on a breaking-new-ground level. And we’re sure Tony’s existence is going to cause a stir — or at least a discussion on our expanding understanding of sex and gender on a much larger level.

Tony — formerly Antoinette Zwicky — is trans: identifying himself in a way that bucks the traditional gender binary grain. But it’s important to note what, exactly, that means as Tony’s existence is not so cut-and-dry: he’s altered his reproductive organs (read: he shoots himself up with testosterone, has a penis) while simultaneously expressing his gender in a non-traditional way (he has long hair, was born female). This, naturally, can cause some confusion considering our world’s up-until-recently, longstanding two-pronged sex and gender system.

The term “transgender” — or its shorthand, trans — is more an umbrella term than anything else. According to the American Psychological Association, a person may identify as transgender if their “gender identity, gender expression, or behavior does not conform to that typically associated with the ...

Watch Weezer’s Drummer Catch A Frisbee — Mid-Song

by 06/08/14

Weezer‘s drummer, Patrick Wilson, busted out some impressive hand-eye coordination skills this weekend when he caught a frisbee mid-set … and kept right on drummin’. And they say musicians aren’t athletic.

At a show in St. Augustine, Florida, the guys were breezing their way through “Beverly Hills” when a wholly identified flying object — a.k.a. a frisbee — sailed onto the stage. Watch Wilson flaunt some serious sportsmanship below while you waited with breath that is bated for the band’s upcoming mystery record.

Lana Del Rey Drops ‘Brooklyn Baby’ For All Of Us Hipsters

by 06/08/14

Lana Del Rey is out with a brand-new track from her upcoming Ultraviolence album and it’s a tongue-in-cheek anthem for everyone who lives in New York’s most Charles Bukowski-packed borough.

While the title of the jam suggests that it’s some kind of Brooklyn anthem, the lyrics are seriously humor-tinged. We’re not sure whether Del Rey is making fun of the wide-eyed creativity of Brooklyn girls, poking fun at herself — or something in between. Fun sidenote: I once saw Lana eating a piece of pizza, waiting for the L train at the Bedford stop. I’m not sure what that contributed to this song, but there it is.

“And my boyfriend’s in a band/ He plays guitar while I sing Lou Reed/ I’ve got feathers in my hair/ I get high on hydroponic weed,” she croons. Her boyfriend Barrie-James O’Neill comes in on the chorus as well, adding another layer of irony when he sings, “Yeah my boyfriend’s pretty cool/ But he’s not as cool as me/ Cause I’m a Brooklyn baby.”

Listen below. Ultraviolence is out June 17.

Tracy Morgan Update: Driver Charged In Crash That Killed James McNair

by 06/07/14

As MTV News reported earlier on Saturday (June 7), “30 Rock” actor/comedian and “Saturday Night Live” alum Tracy Morgan is in critical condition after being involved in a six-vehicle crash in New Jersey this morning.

The driver of the 18-wheeler that crashed into the limo bus carrying Morgan and his entourage has been charged, according to CNN. Georgia resident Kevin Roper, 35, has been charged with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto.

Morgan was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Fellow comedian, comedy writer and passenger James McNair (also known as Jimmy Mack) was killed in the crash. He was 63.

Three other passengers were injured, including Morgan’s assistant, Jeff Millea, who is listed in critical condition, and comedians Ardie Fuqua and Harris Stanton. The group was returning from Morgan’s “Turn It Funny” Tour in Dover, Delaware, on Friday night.

In the wake of the accident, friends and celebrities have taken to Twitter to send well wishes to Morgan and his fellow passengers, and to pay respects to McNair.

Usher Breaks His Silence On Justin Bieber’s Racial Slurs

by 06/07/14

Usher had kept quiet initially after two videos surfaced of his protégé, Justin Bieber, repeatedly using racist slurs and telling racist jokes. But on Saturday (June 7), he came to his defense.

In one leaked video, Bieber sings his 2010 song, “One Less Lonely Girl,” adding rampant use of the N-word and also makes an offensive Klu Klux Klan joke; in the other he tells a racist joke. Bieber has since apologized, and on Saturday (June 7) his mentor insisted that his mentee is “unequivocally not a racist.”

“At my core, I am a person that supports growth and understands without judgement, that growth often comes as a result of pain and continues effort,” Usher wrote. “As I have watched Justin Bieber navigate difficult waters as a young man, I can tell you that he hasn’t always chosen the path of his greatest potential, but he is unequivocally not a racist.”

Usher added that five years ago, Bieber was a “naive child” who didn’t understand “the negative power and degradation that comes from playing with racial slurs,” and contended that now that Bieber is older, he “has the opportunity to become his best self, an example to the millions of kids that follow him to not make the same mistakes.”

The 7 Non-Music Things We Saw At Governors Ball Friday That You Shouldn’t Miss This Weekend

by 06/07/14

The lineup of artists performing at Governors Ball this weekend is top-notch, no question about it. And there’s still a majority of the festival yet to go down — with full schedules on both Saturday (June 7) and Sunday — but having spent Friday out on Randall’s Island, we know there’s more to do than just watch your favorite bands.

In fact, you can even do this stuff while still listening to your favorite bands — just from a little further away.

Free Water Stations
Just bring a bottle up, and cold water is yours for the taking. Remember, hydration is key in this kind of setting.

The Silent Disco
Haven’t decided what’s more fun: Watching a bunch of people dancing recklessly to seemingly no music (because they’re all wearing headphones listening to their own music), or actually being one of those people.

The Statue Of Liberty’s Shoulders and Head
Whether you’re in from out of town for the weekend or a local New Yorker who has never made it to the Statue of Liberty (yes, looking at you, basically every New Yorker reading this), this will do until you get your act together.

Who Knew That Seeing Outkast Live Was On This Many People’s Bucket List?

by 06/07/14

RANDALL’S ISLAND, New YorkOutkast headlined Governors Ball on Friday night, and the New York City crowd certainly showed the legendary group some Northern Hospitality. And rightfully so. Backed by a live band and continuously looking like they were having a blast onstage, Andre 3000 and Big Boi ran through a bevy of monster hits and beloved album cuts, from “Hey Ya” and “Ms. Jackson” to “Spottieottiedopaliscious” and “Aquemini.”

Before their run of festivals this summer, the Atlanta duo hadn’t played together in a decade. So, naturally, there are plenty of fans out there who have never gotten a chance to see them perform. Until now. And more than a few people felt like Friday night’s energetic set gave them the rare opportunity to cross something off of their Bucket List.

And if it wasn’t on your bucket list, it was merely the best show of your life.

And maybe Zach Galifianakis was there?

And if you weren’t there. Well…

Don’t worry, though. There are tons of other opportunities to see them this summer, including at Firefly Music Festival in Delaware on June 21, Forecastle Festival in Louisville, Kentucky on July 19 and a handful more. So even if you weren’t on Randall’s Island Friday, you still have a chance to catch something like this:

I'm serious about these snacks. Catch me @adamfleischer

You’re not a big pop princess fan? Well, you must have heard about Justin Bieber apologizing twice for making racist jokes when he was a teen. Do you think he should be forgiven?

Did you miss any of these stories? Don’t sweat (even though it’s getting hot outside)! I have all the top entertainment tips you #NeedToKnow from this week in the video below — plus an awesome Spotify playlist!

Stop Crying Over ‘The Fault In Our Stars’ And Read These Books

by 06/06/14

Or, at least you should be, because you don’t want to drip tears all over the passel of awesome contemporary YA books we’re going to suggest that you pick up to read the pain away.

MTV hit up some of our favorite YA authors to give their post-TFIOS reading suggestions — and boy, did they deliver. Go on, folks, the bookstore is calling. Gus would have wanted it this way:

1) ‘Where’d You Go, Burnadette?’ by Maria Semple

2) ‘Please Ignore Vera Dietz,’ by A.S. King

“This mysterious and romantic story is told by one of the most honest and unforgettable voices in recent YA literature. Once I started this one, I could do nothing else until I finished.” – Lauren Kate Morphew
