Lil Wayne: ‘Athletes Wanna Be Rappers, Rappers Wanna Be Athletes’

by 05/31/14

For some, music and sports are like oil and water, but for Lil Wayne and his buds Kobe Bryant and Floyd Mayweather, who helped him teased Tha Carter V on their social media, the two “go together like chemicals” to quote Tunechi’s “With You” (we’ll assume those chemicals combust in pleasing ways for this example).Lil Wayne had a lot to say about how the ways music and sports are connected in an interview with ESPN magazine.

“Athletes wanna be rappers, rappers want to be athletes,” Lil Wayne, an avid skateboarder and Lakers fan, told ESPN. “I wanna be what I am.”

Floyd Mayweather’s Lil Wayne assist:

Kobe Bryant’s cosign for Weezy:

“Sports and music are connected by youth. Music is youth, sports is youth, and to the younger players, music is their motivating force,” he added. “Also I believe athletes want you to know who they are — not just how they play. Music is an outlet for that.”

As for his own music and what to expect from his next album, he shared that “Tha Carter V is about growth, flat-out. My thoughts are wiser. I still say what I want to say — it just sounds better and makes more sense. That all comes with growth and maturity.”

Lil Wayne dropped the first Tha Carter V single, “Believe Me” featuring Drake and “D’usse” earlier this month. Also check out the latest Weezy Wednesday installation, “Tina Turn Up Needs A Tune Up.”

Chance The Rapper Throws Out First Pitch, And Nails It

by 05/31/14

If music doesn’t work out, it looks like Chance The Rapper could have a promising second career in baseball, judging at least from his pro-looking windup and throw right into the catcher’s mitt during Friday’s White Sox game against the San Diego Padres at Chicago’s U.S. Cellular Field.

The MC, who recently dropped an amazing cover of the cartoon theme song for “Arthur,” thankfully didn’t suffer the same fate as 50 Cent, whose errant throw caused Fif to be pulled over by the cops and ridiculed all over the internet.

Chance celebrated the successful pitch with an adorable victory fist-pump move. Check out the clip below.

One Direction’s Liam Payne Breaks Silence (Sorta) About Apparent Weed Video

by 05/31/14

One Direction‘s Liam Payne has (sorta) broken the (kinda) silence about the weed video that surfaced online. In the leaked clip, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlison are smoking what appears to be a joint while in a car in Peru.

Some of 1D had used their Twitters to address the incident, mostly by thanking fans, but not directly commenting on the issue. But now Liam is at least indirectly referring to the guys’ possible indiscretion by admitting they may have gone a “little sideways” and “I apologise for that”:

Liam also explained that being young means they’ll “fall short somewhere”:

He also commented on their future and showed gratitude for the fame and success that they’ve achieved as well as for their Directioners:

Despite Liam tweeting that “We have a lot of growing up to do,” it sounds like he’s taken the mature route around this controversy. Zayne, Louis, your move.

Possession of up to 8 grams of marijuana is generally not punishable in Peru.

Here’s How Long It Would Take You To Watch ‘Gangnam Style’ 2 Billion Times

by 05/31/14

Love it or hate it, Psy‘s “Gangnam Style” is one of the biggest musical hits in history. And now, it’s set another record: the first YouTube video to hit two billion views.

Not two million, two billion. And yes, that doesn’t mean two billion people have actually watched it: at least five of those views are probably me. But that’s still a lot of time spent. To give you a fair idea, at four minutes and 13 seconds for the video, that’s approximately:

506 billion seconds

8,433,333,333 minutes

140,555,555 hours

5,856,481 days

195,216 months

16,045 years

What that means is that if only one human being watched the entirety of the “Gangnam Style” two billion views in a row (ignoring the fact that there would also be ads), it would predate human history.

Also ignoring that computers weren’t invented until recently, of course.

But let’s take a look at what this ancient viewer of Gangnam style would have experienced, shall we? 16,000 years ago was the Mesolithic era, ranging from about 10,000 to 5,000 BCE. Though development of humanity varies wildly from region to region, most were beginning to experiment with domestication of animals, as well as learning to live in huts and small villages, instead of caves.

Though it’s tough to pinpoint exactly when, given writing — and the entirety of recorded history — didn’t start until 5,500 years ago in ancient Sumer, we do know that around 16,000 years ago someone sculpted wisent (ancient bison) using clay in a cave named Le Tuc d’Audoubert in the French Pyrenees.

9 Folks We Think Would Do Real Well in the World of ‘Game of Thrones’

by 05/31/14

In the realm of ice and fire, only the sharpest tools in the shed survive — or, at least last a little bit longer than their more noble counterparts (cough cough the Starks cough). All men must die, after all, valar morghulis to that!

With a neverending cavalcade of characters entering and exiting the Realm of “Game of Thrones,” our pop culture obsessed mind got to thinking: which of our favorite characters, celebrities, and the like would live in Westeros and Essos?

And then we thought better still: which of these characters would not only not-die, but thrive?

From imaginary cartoons to IRL humans, we’ve figured out a couple of folks we think would totally own the George R.R. Martin saga with their creativity, cunning wit, and general badassitude. And should you need to be warned, let it be known: this post contains minor spoilers, so don’t say we didn’t warn you, spoilerphobes.

Amy Poehler

Now sure, on first glance you’d say: “But wait: Leslie Knope does everything! She’s a master of government politics and making-it-work and doing the right thing! Wouldn’t she be the better choice?” But then you’d remember that this is Westeros and that sort of noble behavior would get Knope Ned Stark’d in no time flat. Amy, on the other hand, gets stuff done and doesn’t take crap from anyone. She’s a true Targaryen if we’ve ever seen one.

2 Chainz

Now at first glance you might assume that his skillset as a rapper would ...

This ‘Game Of Thrones’ Red Wedding Picture Is The Best Thing Ever

by 05/31/14

The ninth episode of “Game of Thrones” third season is titled “The Rains of Castamere,” but its more “affectionately” known as The Red Wedding. I put “affectionately” in quotes, because the episode is one of the most traumatic hours of television ever committed to film.

In the episode, Walder Frey (David Bradley) gains vengeance on Robb Stark (Richard Madden) for spurning his daughter by agreeing to host the wedding of Robb’s uncle… And then killing everyone. Robb dies. His mother dies. His wife gets stabbed to death, right through their unborn child. Robb’s men die, and all hope is lost, anguish reigns forever.

…But maybe Walder made a mistake? As this brilliant fan picture, shared by “Game of Thrones” fan Gareth Shaw proves, all this death and destruction could have been solved, if the elder Frey wasn’t such a dummy:

How great is actor David Bradley’s expression there? And how much do you want this picture to be in continuity? “I’m sorry,” Frey tells the surviving Starks. “Can we try that again?”

“All good bro,” Arya Stark says, giving Frey a high five.

Now if someone could give Tyrion a “Law for Dummies” book, we’d be all good.

“Game of Thrones” airs on HBO 9 p.m. ET every Sunday.

Adam McKay In ‘Advanced Talks’ To Direct Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’

by 05/31/14

As reported May 30, Marvel was rumored to have the directing choice for their upcoming movie “Ant-Mandown to a list of three. And now, as broken by Ain’t It Cool News, and confirmed by Variety, your new “Ant-Man” director is Adam McKay.

It’s been a week since Edgar Wright, who had been working on writing and directing the movie for nearly a decade, stepped down as director of the project. Since then, the press has been in a frenzy, speculating wildly as to why the fan-friendly creator left the project — not to mention who his replacement might be.

Adam McKay Portrait Session

…And now we know! McKay is well known as a comedy director for movies like “Anchorman,” and is also clearly a comic book fan: he’s been working on developing the series “The Boys” to film for years. Though the ink hasn’t dried on the deal — Variety characterizes the deal as “in advanced talks” — it looks like we’ll be getting McKay teamed back up with his “Anchorman” star Paul Rudd, who will be front and center as the titular hero.

“Ant-Man” is still currently on schedule to be released on July 17, 2015. It also stars Michael Douglas as a different iteration of the size-changing hero. Stay tuned to MTV News, as we’ll have more updates as they happen.

50 Cent Got Pulled Over For His Horrible First Pitch

by 05/30/14

As if the embarrassment from throwing a wildly off-target first pitch at the New York Mets game earlier this week wasn’t bad enough, the honor-turned-viral-moment also nearly got 50 Cent in trouble with the law.

“I actually got pulled over by New York City police,” he admitted on “Good Morning America” on Friday morning (May 30). “The pulled me over in my car. He pulled me over and I said, ‘I got my license,’ right, because I was a little nervous. As soon as he pulled me over, I was like, ‘What’d I do?’ And then, he said, ‘You know that pitch was terrible.’”

Luckily, Fif wasn’t actually in trouble with the law.

“He didn’t give me no ticket, no nothing,” he said. “He said, ‘Just go ahead, go ahead. I don’t wanna mess up your day. I’m just saying, ’cause you made me laugh.’”

Not just you, Mr. Officer. Let’s all watch the pitch again. And again.

I'm serious about these snacks. Catch me @adamfleischer
