Watch LeVar Burton Explain The Glory That Is A Double Rainbow

by 05/30/14

LeVar Burton certainly knows a lot about doubling. Not only has he raised double the goal for his “Reading Rainbow” Kickstarter, he’s also in a very informative video explaining how double rainbows are made manifest.

While the rest of us are more likely to stand, agog, exclaiming, “Double rainbow all the way across the sky!” when we see a ‘bow-times-two, the “Reading Rainbow” host knows what’s up. (Pun intended).

Burton was a special guest on YouTube series “SciShow” this week, where he gave a very detailed breakdown on what makes some rainbows see double.

The appearance comes on the heels of Burton and Co. surpassing their $1 million Kickstarter goal, launched to bring “Reading Rainbow” to the Web and schools around the country.

Currently, the team has raised more than $2 million. Yup, it’s not just butterflies in the sky that are going twice as high.

Kanye West Will ‘Never Sell Out,’ Thanks To J Dilla

by 05/29/14

Kanye West may be one of the biggest stars around these days — grabbing as much attention for his marriage and public antics as his music — but don’t forget: He’s a hip-hop head at heart.

That fact is probably why he appeared in “Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton,” a documentary about Stones Throw Records, an outfit widely respected in rap’s underground. It’s also why he said what he did about the late J Dilla, one of the artists on the label and an individual whose work greatly impacted ‘Ye. It’s a fact that he’s admitted before (he said Dilla influenced Yeezus, for instance), and reiterated again in the film.

Dilla, a Detroit native who is regarded as a legendary producer and was a rapper, as well, passed away in 2006.

“We gotta make music and think, ‘If Dilla was alive, would he like this?’” Kanye said. “I have to work on behalf of Dilla. When I put a weird-ass Jamaican sample, it works at first but it’s not until I put the [makes discordant musical noise] that it sounds like art or sounds slightly wrong. And now it’ll go to the radio now that it’s wrong, motherf–ker. Now play this. Play this 5-minute song that completely f–ks up your programming. The best respect that we can pay to great artists that have inspired us so much is to never sell out.”

Weatherbox Don’t Want To Hang With You In Their ‘Pagan Baby’ Video

by 05/29/14

Weatherbox‘s disconcerting new track, “Pagan Baby,” has got itself a similarly disconcerting new video.

What appears to be your standard live clip — dudes playing instruments in black and white! what fun! — soon morphs into something else altogether as the vid progresses. The camera pulls back to reveal that the performance is merely a video on a computer screen, watched placidly by some unidentified, beer-swilling man.

The stark imagery goes pretty well with the anti-social lyrics, belied by the poppy beat. “Nice to meet you/ Now go away/ I wanna be alone,” sings frontman Brian Warren.

The band’s new LP, Flies In All Directions, is replete with that kind of growling darkness, which catalogs the group’s — and Warren’s — troubles over the years since their 2006 debut.

“I was convinced of awful delusions,” Warren told Buzzworthy of that period. “I’d see men in disturbing prosthetics, caricatures of my friends but sharp teeth and arched eyebrows. At another point I thought I was a ghost a million years in the future, where a holographic overlay of 2006 obscured reality and a semi-hostile robotic intelligence had replaced all of humanity.”

Pharrell Says He’s Not A Feminist: ‘I Don’t Think It’s Possible For Me To Be That’

by 05/29/14

Pharrell is “Happy,” but he says he’s not a feminist.

“I’ve been asked, am I a feminist?” the singer and producer said during an interview with Channel 4 News in the United Kingdom. “I don’t think it’s possible for me to be that.”

When asked why, he responded plainly. “I’m a man. It makes sense up until a certain point. But what I do is, I do support feminists. There’s injustices; there are inequalities that need to be addressed.”

Here’s the thing, P: You can be a man and a feminist. And some of your ideas make it sound like that’s exactly what you are.

Take, for example, when he spoke in support of Hillary Clinton:

“I would love to see a woman run the country,” he said. “Historically, this world has been run by man. And what would a world be like if 75 percent our world leaders, our presidents and prime ministers, were female? What would that world be like? We don’t know, because we haven’t given it a shot. We’re too busy telling them what they can and can’t do with their bodies. Or, we’re too busy, you know, not allowing them to make the same amount of money that a man makes.”

‘Avatar’ The Cirque du Soleil Show Is Actual Thing That’s Going To Happen

by 05/29/14

Did you find yourself watching James Cameron’s 2009 epic Avatar and wishing, “If only this was set to ethereal music and accompanied by brain-melting acrobatics?”

Well wish no more, friends, because the Cirque du Soleil show you never knew you needed in your life is about to become a reality, according to Variety. Cameron is working with the circus artists to bring a live iteration of his big, blue world to the stage.

The news was announced by Daniel Lamarre, president and CEO of Cirque du Soleil on Thursday in Montreal during the international business C2MTL– Commerce + Creativity Conference. (Say that five times fast.) The show is set to debut in late 2015. No longer will Na’vi ways be sequestered to its many planned big screen sequels — in fact with a debut date of 2015, the live iteration will arrive before the three remaining Avatar sequels.

“Over the years, I have discovered the extraordinary talents and imaginations of both the artists and the creative forces behind Cirque du Soleil,” said James Cameron in a statement. “I know we share the common goal of bringing audiences to another level of entertainment experiences. I look forward to doing just that on this project.”

According to Lamarre, this is not some willynilly idea, but rather something that’s been in the works since the first movie debuted. “Our relationship with Jim Cameron began with my visit at his Avatar cutting room. I am thrilled that almost 5 ...

‘Reading Rainbow’ Kickstarts $1 Million In 11 Hours

by 05/29/14

If you were a child sometime during the last 30 years or so, the refrain, “Butterfly in the sky…” will likely do nostalgic things to your head.

Sadly, that jam became nothing but a memory in 2009 when educational program “Reading Rainbow” went off the air, but now, thanks to a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, it’s time for a “take a look, it’s in a book” singalong.

It only took 11 hours for the “Bring Reading Rainbow Back” Kickstarter to hit and surpass its goal of $1 million, with more than 40,000 backers kicking in cash.

Obviously, a lot of folks have been missing the show, which saw host LeVar Burton embarking on reading adventures.

Now that the team has hit their goal, they’re primed to bring back the ethos of “Reading Rainbow” — in a way befitting today’s world.

“‘Reading Rainbow’ needs to come back for today’s kids — but what does that mean?” Burton said in the campaign’s video. “Thirty minutes on TV was yesterday’s world. In today’s world, today’s kids want today’s technology.”

After launching an iPad app in 2012, LeVar and Co. are primed to bring the show to a wider audience — those who might not have tablets at home — by taking “Reading Rainbow” to the Web, complete with an expansive digital library of books and video field trips. Check out this way fun one below about recycling:

LeVar and the rest of the team will use cash raised to launch that Web platform, as well ...

Seth MacFarlane and Charlize Theron Agree: It Takes a Pair (in The West)

by 05/29/14

With reporting by Chris Kim

Listen: no one thinks it’s really all that hard for Seth MacFarlane to be funny. He’s the creator of “Family Guy” and “Ted,” verdamnit: so taking risks is not something he’s really all that disinclined to do.

But still! When it comes to taking an iconic genre like the Western and turning it into his personal brand of silly tomfoolery? Well, now that sorta takes some balls. Luckily, between himself and his “A Million Ways to Die in the West” costar Charlize Theron, they “certainly do” have a full pair — which is just enough to do something this kinda-crazy (in a good way) and get away with it — at least, as MTV News found out when we sat down with the duo.

“A Million Ways to Die in the West” opens May 30. Balls not included.

Brad Pitt Gets Hit
While Brad Pitt was on the blue carpet for the premiere of his wife’s film “Maleficent” Wednesday night, a Ukranian TV reporter named Vitalii Sediuk punched him in the face! The aggressor was arrested. If his name sounds familiar, that’s because earlier this month he tried to crawl underneath America Ferrera’s long white gown at the “How To Train Your Dragon 2″ premiere at Cannes Film Festival. No, Pitt did not get all “Fight Club” on him.
