What’s Up With Mac Miller And Bill Murray?

by 05/12/14

Mac Miller kicked off Valentine’s Day with a truly loving tweet:

Mac’s love for Bill Murray is something he’s hinted at during his career. He called himself the “Young Bill Murray” on Statik Selektah’s 2013 single “21 & Over,” and name-dropped the comedian in his 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards cypher.

It makes some sense, then, that Murray seemed to serve as inspiration for Mac’s new mixtape, Faces, which dropped on Sunday and includes dialogue from two of Murray’s movies on two separate songs.

Those aren’t the vocal samples on the project. After some digging, we found four other notable ones used — taken both from movies and interviews with famous authors.

Song: “Grand Finale”
Sampled Line: “The hallucinations have stopped, finally, thank God, but uh, my adrenaline reserves are burning out and I’m staring straight into the face of a total psychotic freakout.”
What It’s From: “Where The Buffalo Roam” (1980)

Song: “It Just Doesn’t Matter”
Sampled Line: “They’ve got the best equipment that money can buy. Hell, every team they’re sending over here has their own personal masseuse, not masseur, masseuse. But it doesn’t matter.”
What It’s From: “Meatballs” (1979)

Song: “Here We Go”
Sampled Line: “Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth , even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong; this is your oath.”
What It’s From: “Kingdom of Heaven” (2005)

Song: “Polo Jeans”
Sampled Line: Kid #1: “Damn you, rabbit! You smell like f–kin’ piss!”
Kid #2: “You can ...

Your friend probably texted you about it, your co-worker might have offered their take, And you may have seen the many memes floating around social media.

It’s not just Avergae Joes cracking jokes about what they saw on the footage, though. A handful of celebrities got in on it, too, making light of what went down.

50 Cent narrated the footage, in classic 50 fashion:

Coldplay Are Telling Ghost Stories One Week Early: Listen

by 05/12/14

Do you want to hear a ghost story? You’re in luck, Coldplay is streaming their new record, Ghost Stories, Monday (May 12) — a week before its official release.

If you hear on over to iTunes or iTunes radio now, you’ll be able to hear the band’s sixth studio album in full, complete with an animation of Mila Fürstová’s album artwork directed by Alasdair + Jock at Trunk Animation.

Since revealing their album title in March, the band has been giving us shimmering glimpses of the record — from the atmospheric “Midnight” to the Avicii-assisted “A Sky Full Of Stars.”

According to a recent interview with BBC Radio 1′s Zane Lowe in which the singer discussed his divorce from Gwyneth Paltrow for the first time, frontman Chris Martin said he penned the band’s upcoming record with love in mind — love and all its pitfalls.

“I think in life everyone needs to be broken in some way,” Martin said. “I think everyone in their life goes through challenges, whether it’s love or money, kids, or illness … You have to really not run away from that stuff. Life throws these colorful challenges at you.”

Ghost Stories drops on May 19.

Birdman Doesn’t Manage Young Thug But Says ‘He’s Part Of Us’

by 05/12/14

Young Thug may be one of the hottest new rappers around, but no one can seem to sort through his exact label situation. And while that remains a bit unclear, there’s one thing we do now know for sure: Birdman is not offically his manager.

In an interview with Complex for their recent cover story on Thug, Birdman debunked the rumor that he manages the Atlanta rapper. He did confirm that they’re close and that he plans to officially bring him to YMCMB “in time.”

“I always dealt with things differently than the labels,” Birdman said. “I’m part of the life and I’m a part of hip-hop culture. The major labels, they don’t come out here on these streets. They’re sitting in a building and they don’t really know what the f–k is going on. I don’t ever want to be like none of them.”

In March, Buzzfeed attempted to get to the bottom of Thug’s label situation. They talked to a number of sources, and ultimately it came out that, no matter how you sliced it, it seemed like a sticky situation with a number of players. He had paperwork with Gucci Mane’s 1017 Bricksquad, as well as with an Atlantic Records imprint, and had voiced plans to sign with both Future’s Freebandz and YMCMB.

None of that apparent messiness, nor the fact that he’s not Thug’s official manager, appears to soften Birdman’s support of the up-and-comer.

“Really, he’s like my little brother,” he said. “I just want to make sure ...

St. Vincent’s New Music Might Be Inspired By A Famous Imposter

by 05/12/14

St. Vincent‘s new self-titled record contains its share of literary references, but what will serve as inspiration for her next disc? MTV News asked the woman herself, Annie Clark.

St. Vincent is a kind of woozy record, replete with a collage of stories and snippets — from the time Clark went wandering in the desert naked and encountered a snake (“Rattlesnake”) to a hallucination featuring Black Panther co-founder Huey Newton (“Huey Newton”) to a short story by Lorrie Moore (“Severed Crossed Fingers”).

As Clark begins working on new tunes, she told MTV News, she has been looking toward similar buckets of experience both personal and artistic: from eavesdropping on pals to taking in documentaries about infamous trickster Frédéric Bourdin.

Check out the below video to get a peek at what her next album might contain:

Drake And OVO Artist OB O’Brien Get ‘Thotful’ On New Song: Listen

by 05/12/14

Drake isn’t one of those artists who gives out new mixtapes, songs or verses all that often. Usually, if you want new Drizzy, you’d better hope that he’s gearing up for an album release. Over the last month or so, though, the Young Money rapper has been on a bit of a streak.

Since the beginning of April, he’s had a couple solo joints (“Draft Day,” “Days in the East”) and some high profile features, too (“Never Satisfied,” with Future and “Believe Me,” with Lil Wayne).

On Monday (May 12), he returned once again, this time hopping on OB O’Brien’s “2 On/Thotful.”

After OB kicks a short verse to start things off, Drizzy comes onto the DJ Mustard-produced track (the beat was originally used by Tinashe and Schoolboy Q) and grabs the reigns for the song’s remainder.

Take a listen below.

Everything’s Bigger In Braavos
They’ve been teasing it all season, and this episode we got our first glimpse at a major new location in Westeros: the Iron Bank of Braavos. The stronghold on the island nation is run by none other than Sherlock’s older brother, Mark Gatiss: a man who prefers numbers to rumors.

“I prefer the stories they tell. More plain. Less open to interpretation,” Gatiss (who probably has a character name, but whatever) says. That’s in reference to Stannis’ assertion the Bank should give him money because Tommen is a bastard. Instead, Davos shoots back a few numbers of his own, convincing the Bank to give a loan, and pirate Salladhor Saan to give up his naked lady bath for some more ships.

Though this is only a short interaction, we can’t imagine an actor of Gatiss’ stature showed up for one short scene. Expect plenty more from the bank — and Braavos — in upcoming episodes.

Dog Day After-reek

Here’s Miley Cyrus Riding an Inflatable Penis On Stage Because Of Course

by 05/10/14

Miley Cyrus rode a giant inflatable penis on stage in London on Friday. Because of course she did. She also simulated fellatio on that inflati-dick, because of course she did. And in further unsurprising Miley Cyrus news, she also said a bunch of stuff about sex and roofies and sexuality whilst atop the puffed-up member because — you guessed it! — of course she did. She’s just Miley bein’ Miley, y’all. And a Miley do what a Miley wants to do.

While performing onstage at Heaven nightclub in London for her friend Cheyne Thomas’ birthday, the singer/actress/tongue enthusiast worked the crowd out for several songs and even gave us a bit of insight into the mind of Miley Cyrus. “Everyone’s a little bit gay. Some of us just a little bit more than others.” She also insinuated that if your intended partner doesn’t want to get down — gay or otherwise — to “sprinkle something in their drink. That’s what I always do” which is, unsurprisingly, 100% what you should most definitely not do because it is super-duper illegal and dangerous and not at all cool because roofies are fun for approximately no one.

But Miley makes her own rules. Clearly.

Intrepid concertgoer Thomas Welch managed to document Miley’s moves, in case you wanted to see her inflatable penis get the shaft:

It’s just another day in Mileyville.
