Action Bronson’s ‘F–k, That’s Delicious’ Is Out, And We’re Hungry

by 05/06/14

When Action Bronson raps, oftentimes, it’s at least partially about food. The way he handles this subject is one of the things that has made the New York native a favorite among his fans.

In the first episode of his VICE series, “F–k, That’s Delicious,” Bam Bam takes us with him on a snackventure from New Zealand to South Africa to Queens, New York. At various points in the 10-minute episode, the entire palate gets satisfied: there’s pizza, pork belly and a malted milkshake, among other general delectability.

OK. Time to go eat.

Jadakiss Has Some Words For The Internet Thugs On 50′s New Single: Watch

by 05/06/14

50 Cent and Jadakiss may have put their issues in the past, but that doesn’t mean it’s all love on their new collaboration, “Irregular Heartbeat,” which also features Kidd Kidd.

In fact, it’s anything but all love. The hook and verses on the song and video, which dropped on Tuesday (May 6), are filled with tough talk and the lyrical equivalent of the three MCs puffing out their chests. For his part, Kiss decides to take aim at Internet thugs: “30 something and you ain’t even open your mouth yet/ Social media is giving cowards a outlet/ See him in person, say something, I doubt that/ Rather get caught with it than get caught without that/ Trying to back peddle and stumble on the curb/ You starin’ at the ground, you mumblin’ your words.”

The spooky, minimalist G Rocka & Medi track is the latest in a weekly string of 50 Cent releases. The accompanying visuals, falling in line with the gritty lyrical themes of the track, show the story of a home-invasion-turned-kidnapping.

50′s fifth solo album, Animal Ambition, drops on June 3.

Who Will Neon Trees Frontman Tyler Glenn Make Out With In Future Videos?

by 05/06/14

Neon Trees‘ Tyler Glenn may have come out before releasing the band’s newest effort Pop Psychology, but most of the pronouns in the band’s new songs — and the love interests in their videos — are still female.

Does Glenn plan to whip out some “he”s moving forward? MTV News hit him up to find out.

“I don’t think pronouns matter really with music because music is so universal,” Glenn told MTV News, adding that women are not always the love interests they seem in the band’s work.

In the video for “Sleeping With A Friend,” for example, Glenn says the woman functions as a kind of a villain.

“Technically I’m sort of running from this girl in the video,” he said. “Not to make women out to be bad, but… I kind of spent my life trying to date girls when in reality it just wasn’t my nature.”

Glenn, who was raised Mormon, came out in a recent interview with Rolling Stone after turning 30.

Still, he does say that mixing up the pronouns could be possible in the future.

“I think there might be an opportunity,” he said. “We do have a lot of love-centered songs — whether they’re good love or bad love. I don’t know, maybe it would be fun to make out with a dude and raise some eyebrows in a music video.”

Brenna Ehrlich is a reporter for MTV News as well as the senior writer/editor for the O Music ...

Together Pangea Saved A Little Girl’s Life On ‘NCIS’ — No Joke

by 05/06/14

File this under “Things That Are So Weirdly Awesome We Literally Clapped With Glee”: Los Angeles garage thrashers together PANGEA saved a child’s life on last week’s episode of “NCIS: Los Angeles.” Yup, still more proof that rock ‘n’ is far from dead.

The band doesn’t have a song on the episode’s tracklist — or a guest-starring role. Nope, the “Too Drunk To C-m” singers are integrated directly into the plot. Allow me to break it down:

When a 10-year-old girl that NCISLA agent Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) once provided protection for in Saudi Arabia goes missing, he’s certain that her disappearance is related to the theft of a fancy new plane designed by her engineer father.

Why? Well, the only thing left in the getaway van is the CD booklet for together PANGEA’s new record, Badillac, and the little girl is a HUGE TP fan. She used to play the band’s jam “Snakedog” all the time on the drums when she was in Saudi Arabia with LL — I mean, Sam.

“It’s a little girl’s SOS,” Hanna says of the CD.

So how did this gloriousness — which includes LL Cool J muttering “together PANGEA” in a “it’s a clue!” voice — come about?

According to music supervisor Mark Wike, he had been aware of the band for a while and was looking for a way to integrate them into the show.

“Jon Granat [who signed the band] and I were barreling down a killer single-track trail in the Santa Monica mountains on our ...

Need To Know: Beyoncé, Rihanna & More Stun At 2014 Met Gala

by 05/06/14

Stars Came Out For The 2014 Met Gala
While you may have been having a ball yesterday with your Cinco de Mayo festivities, stars lined the red carpet in NYC for the 2014 Met Gala. “Gossip Girl” alumnae Blake Lively and Leighton Meester, Oscar award winner Lupita Nyong’o and Victoria Beckham were just some of the stars who glammed up the red carpet. I applaud the certain stars who went the unconventional route (Michelle Williams dared to go short while Brie Larson wore sequin pants). Peep all the photos here.

Music Meets Fashion At The Met Ball
What’s a red carpet without Jay Z and Beyonce? Other music artists who attended the Met Ball were Janelle Monae, Rita Ora (who popped into our studios just a couple of hours before), Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift, who, thanks to her cat, almost wore a torn custom-made Oscar de la Renta dress!

Besties Reunited
Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift put the feuding rumors to rest when they hit the dance floor inside. Proof’s in the video.

Katy Perry Gears Up For Prismatic Tour
One music artist missing from the Met Gala last night was Katy Perry, who kicks off “The Prismatic World Tour” tomorrow in Ireland. She shared a picture of herself in a larger-than-life yin-yang dress and joked that she was missing the ball because it “wouldn’t fit through customs.”

American Idol Alum Robbed At Gunpoint
American Idol winner and country singer Scotty McCreery ...

Which Rappers Have The Largest Vocabularies?

by 05/05/14 rapper-vocabulary-chart

More so than many genres of music, rap is based around words. They hold a special importance. It’s why there are full books and websites dedicated to lyrics alone.

To help quantify some of the the variance in words that rappers use, Matt Daniels, who is a coder, designer and data scientist, put together a project he called “The Largest Vocabulary in Hip Hop.” To do this, he compiled dozens of rappers’ first 35,000 lyrics, using the website RapGenius, and sought to determine which MC had the largest vocab.

“I used a research methodology called token analysis to determine each artist’s vocabulary,” he exlpains on his site. “Each word is counted once, so pimps, pimp, pimping, and pimpin are four unique words. To avoid issues with apostrophes (e.g., pimpin’ vs. pimpin), they’re removed from the dataset. It still isn’t perfect. Hip hop is full of slang that is hard to transcribe (e.g., shorty vs. shawty), compound words (e.g., king sh–), featured vocalists, and repetitive choruses.

Some of the results are surprising. For instance, Eminem, at 4,494 unique words, used less than 100 more than Diddy. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, with their rapid fire deliveries, were fourth to last on the list.

Others aren’t quite as jarring, like the fact that members of Wu-Tang Clan, Outkast and Kool G Rap were all near the top in terms of unique words used.

Lorde Calls OUT Scary, ‘Stalking’ Paparazzo

by 05/05/14

From flip-flopping journalists to Photoshop, Lorde isn’t one to stay silent when it comes to her feelings on the media.

The latest issue to get stuck in her craw? Paparazzi — specifically New Zealand photographer Simon Runting, who she says is “stalking” her.

“this man has been stalking me, photographing me and refusing me privacy. i am scared of him. he frequents central akl [Auckland],” Lorde tweeted, including a photo of Runting.

“this should not be an accepted standard for young women or anyone in this industry,” she added. “i refuse to stay complicit and i refuse to stay passive about men systematically subjecting me to extreme fear. i understand that this comes with the territory. i do not understand why I should be complacent.”

Lorde also posted a link to his Facebook page.

Lorde isn’t the first person to call out Runting for his practices. Rihanna has also taken the photog to task in the past, posting a shot he took of her on her hotel balcony to Instagram with the caption: “I hate these n—az more than the Nazi,” a reference to Kanye’s “Flashing Lights.” She later removed the image.

Runting was also the defendant in famous New Zealand privacy case “Hosking v Runting,” in which TV presenter Michael Hosking took on the pap over photos that Runting took of his children.

It’s unclear whether Lorde plans to take further action against Runting — aside from turning the privacy tables.

Boots Is Only Going To Tell His Story Once — But You Can Hit ‘Repeat’

by 05/05/14

“Congratulations, you made it,” Boots says as we speed through the gauntlet of Times Square neon, rain slashing the Uber windows as Beyoncé‘s “Partition” blares from the speakers. The car erupts into seat-dancing — dancing that becomes even more fervent when “Drunk In Love” comes on.

No one tells the driver that he has unwittingly sound-tracked tonight’s car ride with jams dear to the man currently sitting in the backseat — the man who produced about 80% of Beyoncé’s self-titled surprise record and co-wrote a good portion of the songs therein.

I am hyper-aware, however, of the oddness of the situation. I had started out that night at a listening party for Boots’ debut mixtape, WinterSpringSummerFall, and continued it dancing to music penned by the man himself and sharing whiskey at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right. I had “made it,” I guess.

Despite “making it,” however — a state of affairs that I’m certain I achieved because I kept my phone sheathed during the party — that doesn’t mean I get all the answers. In fact, I came out of my very first meeting with Boots with more questions than I went in with. And guess what? I kind of like it that way…

Boots, a Miami native who previously played in a bevy of bands, including Blonds, first found his place in the music world in the form of a question mark when Beyoncé sprung her self-titled record unto the world at the end of 2013. His name was all over the ...
