Chance The Rapper Celebrates Acid Rap Anniversary With New Song: Listen

by 04/30/14

Chance the Rapper is viewed as one of rap’s best young talents ‒ and that’s thanks in large part to his 2013 mixtape Acid Rap. Wednesday (April 30) marked the one-year anniversary of the release, and the Chicago rapper celebrated by releasing a new track.

That song, released on his official Soundcloud page, doesn’t feel particularly celebratory, though. “I Am Very Very Lonely” finds Chano sing-rapping over a stripped down, somber beat produced by the Social Experiment. As is often the case, his voice comes off as both the most powerful and important instrument on the track.

“It’s just me and la cucaracha, tonight/ Cold pizza with the hot Sriracha, tonight/ Apple TV, Comcast, don’t know what to watch-a, tonight/ Shoulda had you when I had you, now I wish I gotcha, tonight,” the 21-year-old croons to open the song.

From there, Chance continues to set the scene of a night alone that anyone ‒ not just a famous rapper ‒ can relate to: cooking by yourself, trying to stay busy, hoping that that special someone calls or texts.

The song is the first that he’s released since cancelling shows due to an illness last week. After missing his Coachella set, Chance had to shut down his touring through the week due to a combination of the flu and tonsillitis.

There’s no word on when Chance plans to drop his new project, so this will have to hold fans over for the time being.

Who Should Buy The Clippers? We’ve Got Some Ideas

by 04/30/14

Beyond the lifetime ban and hefty fine that the NBA slapped Donald Sterling with on Tuesday, the league’s commissioner, Adam Silver, also announced that he’s maneuvering to make the Los Angeles Clippers owner sell the team. The punishment came after the 81-year-old made racist remarks in a recording that surfaced over the weekend.

If Sterling is indeed forced to sell the franchise, the result, of course, is that someone(s) else will then own it. Who could those someones be? A number of wealthy celebrities have already expressed interested in buying the Clippers, and though buying a pro sports franchise can be an expensive endeavor, here are some others who should consider.

Dr. Dre And Jimmy Iovine
These two have proven time and again that they can come together to make some pretty powerful business moves. From their musical collaborations at Interscope and Aftermath to headphone company/streaming service/brand-that’s-everywhere Beats by Dr. Dre, Jimmy and the Doc have what it takes to run a big company, and work well together. Add to that the fact that Dre is an L.A. native and Iovine has been a West Coast transplant for years now, and these two could be a good fit.

Top Dawg
If it’s not an elder generation of rap influencers that go after the Clips, why not the new kids that are runnin’ things? Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith and his eponymous label ‒ with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul ‒ rep L.A. to the fullest. Top Dawg sits courtside at ...

‘Batman Eternal #4′ Locks Commissioner Gordon In The Slammer

by 04/30/14

Each week, DC Comics is releasing a new issue of the epic “Batman Eternal” comic, and each week we’re talking down the biggest moments. This week, Scott Snyder may not be writing, but he is showrunning the book — the fourth issue was written by John Layman — and breaks down shocking twists with Stephanie Brown, Commissioner Gordon and Gordon’s mysterious cell-mate:

MTV News: This issue we find out that even Stephanie Brown’s mom is working against her… At this point, is there anyone she can trust?

Scott Snyder: That’s part of the big conflict with her. She has to find somewhere she can go, and someone she can trust. As you saw in “Batman #28″ where we flash-forward and she’s in the clutches of the newly crowned kingpin of crime, Selina Kyle, it’s not going to be easy for her.

It’s going to be a very long road for her in ways that I think will be exciting for people. And also, the people that she meets along the way, or ends up pairing with — whether it’s young characters like Harper and Cullen, or other ones that are new ones you haven’t met before — it will hopefully be as exciting for you to read as it has been for us to write them.

MTV: Later in the issue, Batman breaks in on Carmine Falcone, who he knows has been manipulating everything in Gotham. Why doesn’t Bruce just take him down? What’s stopping him?

Snyder: The problem with that is that he ...

‘Arrow’: Paul Blackthorne Reveals A Surprising Twist In Deathstroke’s War

by 04/30/14

Paul Blackthorne hasn’t been having an easy season on “Arrow,” playing the part of former detective Quentin Lance. He got knocked down to beat cop, then beaten up, then arrested. And the whole time, he’s been struggling with one daughter who was addicted to alcohol, and another who was a secret superhero.

Add in the shocking twist at the end of the last episode, which found Queen family matriarch Moira killed by villain Deathstroke, and Quentin is the last adult standing. So what’s left for him to fight for?

“The sisters, they’re the ones I care about,” Blackthorne said when we talked to him by phone. ” And behind them, the city.”

Adding insult to injury, his daughter Sara (Caity Lotz) left town in the last episode without saying goodbye.

“It’s a bit of a shrug, honestly,” Blackthorne said on the abrupt departure. “Sara has always been likely to do that sort of thing, where Laurel has always been the sensible one. It’s a here we go again moment.”

So while that may not change his character too much, one thing that will is the war coming to Starling City. In the final few episodes of the season, Deathstroke is building his army, while The Arrow is building one of his own. Stuck in the middle is regular ol’ Quentin Lance.

“There are great little one-liners that the writers come up with,” Blackthorne noted, “Which is sort of Lance trying to wrap his head around, this men and women showing up in their exotic outfits. For a ...

Katy Perry Agrees — Watching Hamsters Eat Tiny Burritos Is The Best

by 04/30/14

Are you having a rough day? Do your parents have you down? Is your BF/GF being a total you-know-what? Did someone just spontaneously kick you in the face?

Well, Katy Perry has your back — along with a cadre of fluffy little hamsters just munchin’ on burritos. Burritos, I say!

Miss “Dark Horse” herself hit up Twitter Humpday (April 30) to bestow upon us the following message: “When life gets overwhelming just watch tiny hamsters eating tiny burritos.”

You are as wise as you are beautiful, Katy.

Perry then posted a video that is 100% guaranteed to turn your day all the way around and back again — and then back again.

I’m not going to say much else — why gild perfection? — just feast your eyes on these cuties feasting…

50 Cent Doesn’t Think Drake Is ‘Dangerous Competition’ For Jay Z

by 04/30/14

Having had issues with everyone from Ja Rule to Rick Ross at various points during his career, 50 Cent is something of an expert in the art of musical warfare. For the latest hip-hop bout, though, he’s just an observer on the sidelines ‒ but he’s still got a few thoughts on the situation.

“I don’t think it’s a dangerous competition for Jay,” he told Hot 97′s Funkmaster Flex of the recent spat between Jay Z and Drake. “At all.”

The two rap stars have been exchanging jabs of late, though things don’t appear to have gotten too heated just yet. Earlier this year, Drake told Rolling Stone that he didn’t appreciate the frequency with which Hov was rapping about art; Jay responded on his “We Made It” remix with an apology to “Mrs. Drizzy.”

The Toronto native seemed to fire back earlier this month on “Draft Day,” boasting that he was focused on “Just hits, no misses.” Then, this week, Jigga sent what many perceived as a subliminal shot at Drake on DJ Khaled’s single “They Don’t Love You No More,” rapping, “Wrong sport, boy, you know you’re soft as a lacrosse team.”

How much things escalate remains to be seen, but Fif believes that a winner will be determined not just by the tenacity of the rhymes, but the entirety of the songs.

“I don’t know [who I'd choose lyrically],” he said. “It’s gonna be what musical chioces. the production choice count, too. It’s the same ‘Ether’ ...

SoundCloud Is Totally Helping My Friend’s Band Plan Their Tour

by 04/30/14

It’s a common lament: Band has tons of online fans. Band books tour because, hey, tons of fans! Band hits a new city. Band plays to an empty room. Band drinks beer and salty tears while sleeping in a van outside the venue until the cops come and shoo them away.

Well, a new tool courtesy of SoundCloud could help cure musicians of the empty room blues. (When it comes to lodging, though, they’re on their own.)

If you’re a musician with a SoundCloud Pro Unlimited subscription, you’ll now find “top countries” and “top cities” in your stats section, allowing you to see where your tunes are played the most. This is priceless info, folks.

When striking out on tour, a lot of bands head to city centers — New York, Los Angeles, Chicago — aiming to play out where people go out. Looking at the stats, however, this might not be the best recourse — at least for up-and-comers.

Take my musically inclined friend, Russ Marshalek of the band A Place Both Wonderful And Strange. Dude gave me a peek under the hood of his account and I was kind of blown away.

Despite residing in Brooklyn, his cities were a pretty festive melange: Atlanta, Georgia; Redding, California; Berlin, Germany; Black River Falls, Wisconsin; and Melaka, Malaysia.

New York and all the rest? Noticeably absent. Have fun in Malaysia, Russ! Send me copious postcards!

Now, I don’t know if Russ is really going to spring for that international plane ticket, but at least when ...

9 Spoilers From The Secret ‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Screenings

by 04/30/14

20th Century FOX has lifted the veil on “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” with a series of screenings this morning, and we were lucky enough to get a glimpse at twenty minutes of somewhat unfinished ape action.

The short review? If you were fan of the first movie, you’re going to love what they’re doing with the new movie. For the long version — and spoilers — read on:

Trailer Of The Apes
The footage started off with a new trailer for the movie, which laid out the whole story. Since the simian plague decimated the population of planet Earth in the first film, Apes have been living peacefully in their own society North of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Into this peace enters humans, led by Malcolm (Jason Clarke), who wants to bridge the gap between the two races. Unfortunately, due to machinations by Dreyfus (Gary Oldman), the fragile peace breaks apart, and all out war engulfs San Fran.

The trailer conveyed both the character work and the epic scale of the action, nicely setting the stage for the footage to come.

Just Like A Serkis
Andy Serkis wasn’t available to intro the footage in person, what with him table reading “Star Wars” and all, but he did film a brief video intro to the footage. Of note, Serkis plugged there were more motion capture actors this outing of the apes, and more shooting on practical locations than sound-stages.

Given they were green-screening in a frickin’ ...

Wait, Is This Harry Styles?

by 04/30/14

Hey Directioners: I have a mid-week mind-blower for you. Check out the dude in the image up there. Dreamy, right? Perfect, no? Is your heart racing like a raver on too much blackmarket Four Loko while your soul wails “Hazza”? Roger that.

Well, get this: That is not, in fact, Harry Styles. Cue a very anatomically correct exploding brain noise.

Yes, I know, this is a literally unbelievable statement, but it’s true, guys. The above well-haired one is, in fact, Dot Major of London Grammar.

Yes, he is a totally divergent human man who is not related to Harry Styles at all.

Still, when Major and the rest of the band came in to chat with MTV News about their debut record If You Wait, he had a fewer staffers confused — and more than one fluttering to my desk, screeching, “Was that Harry?”

And, it seems, the denizens of MTV News aren’t the only ones seeing double — according to the band, Major gets mistaken for Styles all the time, a state of affairs they find “weird.”

Weird or no, check out the side-by-side below. I would say they should play together — if not for that whole seeing-ones-doppelgänger-portends-certain-death thing. Damn that fickle finger of fate.

‘Star Wars: Episode VII’: What We Still Need To Know

by 04/30/14

The cast for “Star Wars: Episode VII” may have been officially announced, but there’s still a lot of things we need to know about the new movie. For example:

What’s The Title?
Smart money says the title for the movie — which won’t remain, “Star Wars: Episode VII” — will be revealed this summer at San Diego Comic-Con. That’s also where the rest of this news will hit, including the first public gathering of the cast.

Another Female Star?
After the fandom cried out, as if they had only cast two women in “Star Wars,” rumors started to fly that there was still one female role yet to be cast. Given that rumors also swirled around an African-American actress — Lupita Nyong’o was a frequently raised name — playing the Jedi daughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi, its possible these two rumors may be one and the same.

Regardless, there are going to be more than 13 speaking parts in the movie, which means just because they weren’t at the table read doesn’t mean there aren’t more people who will appear on screen.

Lando Calrissian and Han Solo

What About Lando?
We previously speculated about some of the more prominent “Star Wars” actors that didn’t show up in London yesterday, including Billy Dee Williams. A tweet sent by Williams, which has since been deleted seemed to imply that the actor wasn’t even asked to return. Since then, Williams has taken to retweeting fans demanding that Lando Calrissian be included in ...
