This Teen’s Brilliant Invention Could Prevent Accidental Gun Deaths

by 22 mins ago

17-year-old Kai Kloepfer’s invention might’ve just solved one of America’s biggest issues—accidental gun deaths.

The teen has invented a device that uses fingerprint sensors to prohibit anyone but certified users from firing the weapon. The main focus of the device is to prevent children and teens from injuring or killing themselves after accidentally stumbling upon firearms.

“Since 1979, two and a half times as many children and teens have been killed with firearms as the total number of US military casualties in the Iraq, Vietnam and Afghanistan wars combined,” Kloepfer told Fox 31 Denver News, who interviewed him about the invention. “That’s a statistic that we could fix.”

Last year, the Colorado teen entered his biometric touch sensor in the 2013 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and placed 34th out of 7 million student entries. Now, Smart Tech Challenges Foundation has awarded him $50,000 to make the invention into a reality.

The grant is in conjunction with Smart Tech for Firearms Challenge, a program that seeks to improve firearm safety and reduce gun-related tragedies by emphasizing personalization features and locking devices on firearms.

“All you have to do is pick the firearm up and the way you naturally rest your hand on the firearm unlocks it,” Kloepfer said. “So you don’t have to swipe or anything like that.”

The sensor can be programmed with multiple fingerprints, so it would work for police forces or military use, in addition to protecting ...

Echosmith’s ‘Cool Kids’ Video Makes Us Happy To Be Weird

by 43 mins ago

Everyone knows that two is better than one — which is why it’s pretty rad that Echosmith has graced us with not just one video for their hit jam “Cool Kids,” but another as well.

Oh, and they also gave it to MTV exclusively today (September 11) for our premiering pleasure. Feeling special commences now.

Check out the dancey, slightly odd (fittingly) ode to anti-conformity below:

Remy Ma Remixes Bobby Shmurda’s Hit: Listen To ‘Hot B—h’

by 44 mins ago

Remy Ma has been out of jail for just over a month, and what better way to make her mark in the current music climate than by remixing one of the year’s most buzzed-about tracks? That’s exactly what Rem did on Thursday (September 11), with her take on Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot N—a.”

Aptly renamed “Hot B—h,” the Bronx rapper’s version finds her bouncing over the Jahlil Beats-produced banger with ease. She talks greasy for a while, and also kicks an impressive string of alliteration at one point. Plus, she brings up her recent bid.

“I just came home, I’m tryna get this shmoney, attempted shmurda was the case that they gave me,” she says as the track opens, before launching into her rhymes, referencing the recent six-plus bid she did behind bars.

It’s unclear if this is just a one-off giveaway or will be included on Remy’s upcoming mixtape, I’m Around, which she told MTV News is dropping soon, and will address what she’s gone through over the last few years.

“It’s kind of impossible, after being in prison for six-and-a-half-years, and being home for 19 days, to only talk about what I’m going through right now,” she told us last month. “It’s very hard not to bring up what I went through. Even though, in the future, I don’t want to keep dwelling on the past. I don’t want to dwell in the past now, but that was a large part of my life, so it has affected ...

David Beckham Loved This Jay Z Line So Much He Got It Tattooed

by 7 mins ago

When Beyonce and Jay Z took their On The Run tour to the Los Angeles Rose Bowl, they probably didn’t realize they would change the life of David Beckham forever. During the concert on August 2, Jay Z reportedly ad-libbed an encouraging line to the crowd: “Dream big, be unrealistic.”

Now, this might sound like a rather mundane line to the average concert-goer, but the adage seems to have hit home for both David and his wife Victoria, who tweeted the line shortly after, along with her admiration for the royal couple of music.

But David Beckham did more than post the lines on his personal micro-blogging account. Instead, he had them tattooed on his hand; the black, scripted letters will now serve as a constant reminder for the former soccer player whenever he glances down.

You can get a glimpse of it here, on the top of his right hand:

And here it is a little closer:

(The words are indecipherable at this range but you get the idea, placement-wise)

Considering Beckham already has an extensive collection of ink, what’s a little more? Especially in the name of dreaming big. Inking an uplifting phrase on your knuckles is one thing, but the words are facing away from his body, so they’re clearly meant for others to read. Anyone close enough to decipher a phrase on David Beckham’s hand, that is.

Personally, I’m waiting on Victoria to get ***FLAWLESS across ...

Was U2′s Apple Album Release A Good Idea? We Asked The Experts

by 26 mins ago

There have been a lot of snide remarks and general grumbling about U2′s latest record release, Songs Of Innocence — but most of that ire isn’t directed at the music itself. People are a little less than satisfied that the band released the record for free at Apple’s big product launch, sending the new tunes to everyone with an iTunes account without their consent. It was a bold move to be sure, one that won’t soon be forgotten by the iPhone-slinging set.

Still, that bold move, according to many musicians and music industry experts, was not a misstep or a mistake — or anything to be angry about, really. It was basically in-line with what musicians are facing in today’s chimera-like music industry — an attempted strike against falling music sales and market over-crowding. And it was, generally, pretty smart.

‘Getting Bums In Seats’

u2-sweetest-thing-o

First of all, all that free music will likely result in a whole lot of ticket sales for the band — an area that brings in a lot of cash for a lot of artists. Top 2013 moneymaker Taylor Swift, for example, made $30 million last year on tour, which accounted for most of her earnings for that year.

For some artists, the whole “no one makes money from selling records — it’s all about touring” thing is a tired refrain, but according to media analyst Mark Mulligan, that refrain was likely a factor here. The record, he ...

Nicki Minaj Says Her Old High School Won’t Let Her Come Speak To The Students

by 27 mins ago

Through her music, social media and videos, Nicki Minaj gets to speak to millions of kids all the time. But she says that she wasn’t allowed to do so in person at her old high school, even though she wanted to.

“I wanted to go back to my HS and speak to the students but the new principal declined,” Nicki wrote on Twitter on Thursday (September 11). “No need for me to inspire them, I guess.”

In the past, the Young Money rapper has spoken highly of her alma mater, LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, located in New York. “It was the first time I felt like I really fit in,” she told Teen Vogue last year of her high school experience. “Everyone there was creative. For once, I didn’t feel like there was something weird about me.”

Maybe they took exception to her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up track “High School”?

Check out Nicki’s tweets below.

Tyga Heads Back To The Strip Club For ‘Real Deal’ Video: Watch

by 17 mins ago

With his new album, The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty, set to drop in two months, Tyga looks like he’s getting ready to kick things into full gear. On Thursday (September 11), he dropped the video for the album’s latest single, “Real Deal.”

For both the track and the video, the Los Angeles rapper goes back to where he found his biggest success, thanks to his breakout hit, “Rack City”: the strip club. Things don’t get too explicit this time around, as the Young Money MC navigates his way through a dimly lit club — though there are a few scantily clad ladies, stripper poles and airborne one dollar bills showing up throughout.

“Real Deal” is the third song Tyga has dropped from the album, which is scheduled to come out on November 18, and will be executive produced by Kanye West.

“I met Kanye like six years ago and it’s always been cool,” Tyga told MTV News in March. “Every time we chopped it up or been around each other it’s always been cool vibin’, and he was just like, ‘Yo, man I’ll produce your joint. I’ll produce your joint if you want me to,’ and I was just like, ‘Hell yeah, man, that’s a blessing.’”

Grant Morrison Wants To Do A ‘Godzilla’ Movie

by 27 mins ago

Writer Grant Morrison has destroyed – and built – new universes in the pages of comic books for years. But never before has he created two of them at the same time, in the same comic – and luckily, this one has an appropriate title: “Annihilator.”

The first issue of the eagerly anticipated book hits stores this week, so MTV News hopped on the phone with the writer to talk about his influences for the book, his flirtation with Hollywood, and how he’s dying to do a “Godzilla” movie:

MTV News: I remember chatting with you about this about two San Diego Comic-Cons ago, so this has been in the works for a while.

Grant Morrison: I came up with it a few years ago, and then we got Frazier [Irving] on board, and he’s been working on it since. We waited until we had enough material to feel comfortable to start releasing it. That’s why it’s taken two years, probably. But it’s the most recent thing I’ve made, so I’m pretty excited.

MTV: Given that it’s a Hollywood satire, and things change in entertainment so rapidly, were you at all worried that the business would be totally different by the time this book was released?

Morrison: There are certain things that will always been in play. There will always be big franchises, and in the next few years they’ll be darker and darker, and more Batman than Batman. So we’re obviously talking about that, but at the same time that opened up ...

Dylan O’Brien Officially Has The Best Victory Dance Ever — Watch

by 18 mins ago

With “The Maze Runner” hitting theaters September 19th, the main cast have been promoting up a storm. In an interview of sorts with AwesomenessTV, Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scoledario, Will Poulter and Thomas Brodie-Sangster play a game called “Fugitive” — basically, the British version of Cops & Robbers.

Cop Scoledario squares off against robbers Poulter, Brodie-Sangster, and O’Brien as they run like crazy to escape her, and it’s the most adorable thing ever. It’s also probably a welcome break for O’Brien who, at this point, may have been asked “Did you have to run in your audition?” approximately one billion times by now.

Check it out:

Of course, Dylan won — he is the Maze Runner after all — and his victory dance is the best thing we’ve seen all day:

However, it’s hardly the first time that O’Brien has goofed off in GIF-worthy form. Here’s something you may or may not have known about Dylan O’Brien — he likes to dance. Like a total dork. And we love it more than puppies.

Don’t believe us?

Nirvana Lyrics Baffle Teens

by 4 mins ago

A few months ago, a video titled “Teens React To Nirvana” delighted us all as a cadre of young ones expressed their admiration for the seminal band. A new video, however, shows that while the younger set may be down with Cobain and Co., they might not necessarily be able to sing along when “Smells Like Teen Spirit” hits the speakers.

Watch a group of teens — hilariously — react to the jam’s lyrics (sans music) below, or just comb through some of the best responses we culled from the bunch.

Before you judge, however, take a look at #11, because it’s actually kind of true. (Unless you’ve learned all the lyrics to “Lithium” alone in your apartment, practicing with your cat for karaoke night. Which is something I definitely haven’t done…)

1.) I don’t know if this person knows, but lyrics are supposed to be, like, connect[ed].

2.) ‘Oh no, I know a dirty word’ — that’s like something that a kid would say.

3.) He must have no confidence that the best thing they do, they suck at it.

4.) Is this a Kanye West song?

5.) This does not make any sense.

8.) Now it’s sounding like a love song.
