How Was Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ Director Influenced By ‘The Shining’?

by 5 mins ago

When Taylor Swift announced she had three surprises as part of her epic livestream, there was one little detail that may have gotten lost in the shuffle: her video for “Shake It Off” was directed by none other than Mark Romanek.

Wait, who? For those versed in movie ephemera, and music video history, Romanek’s involvement in “Shake It Off” is nearly as exciting as the announcement of her new album, “1989.” But for those not in the know, here’s a little primer on why Romanek matters – and how he made “Shake It Off” look so darn good.

“Static” (1985)

Though Romanek would later be best known for his work on music videos, he actually started with a love of film created by multiple viewings of Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey…” Which makes sense, given his focus on sparse, stark settings (like the soundstage in “Shake It Off”) and emphasis on shocks of color.

Though he got some street cred working with fabled thriller director Brian de Palma, Romanek’s first feature was weirdo sci-fi film “Static” in 1985, starring Amanda Plummer. This led directly to his first music video gig for British New Wave group The The, who featured on the soundtrack for the film.

“One Hour Photo” (2002)

After almost two decades of creating iconic music videos for Nine Inch Nails (“Closer”), Janet and Michael Jackson (“Scream,” which once again showed off his “2001″ influence), Jay-Z (“99 Problems”) and way more, Romanek once again returned to his first love, film.

The MTV Video Music Awards are a night of many moods — joy! hilarity! drama! Our amazing roster of performers announced so far cover all those bases, and today (August 19), we’re primed to bring yet another emotion to the table: weeping, beautiful, glorious sorrow, courtesy of Sam Smith.

That’s right, the The Lonely Hour singer will join Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and more live onstage at the Forum in Inglewood, California, on Sunday, August 24.

As if the Artist To Watch/Best Male Video nominee’s impending performance weren’t exciting enough, we’ve also got word that a few more superstars will be hitting the stage: namely, a presenters’ list that includes Lorde, Demi Lovato, Taylor Schilling, Laverne Cox and Uzo Aduba from the cast of “Orange Is the New Black,” Dylan O’Brien from the forthcoming “Maze Runner” movie and “Teen Wolf,” “Vampire Diaries’” star Nina Dobrev, Jason Derulo and Trey Songz.

DJ Mustard will also be holding it down between sets as our house DJ.

But in order to embrace the tears that we’ll all undoubtedly shed come Sunday, we’ve compiled Sam’s nine most weep-worthy lyrics. Bathe your cheeks in saltwater now as training for the impending flood.

Need To Know: James Franco Goes Pantsless For ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

by 2 mins ago

He Thinks He’s So Funny
James Franco must not have wanted to get his pants wet when he took on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, because he wasn’t wearing any. Judging by his Moby Dick shirt and the fact that he covered his private parts with a sheet of yellow paper with the names of Zach Braff, Joey King and Keegan Allen, his decision to go pantsless definitely was for added LOLs. Thanks, Selena Gomez for challenging him.

G-Unit Address Michael Brown Shooting On ‘Ahhh Sh–’

by 26 mins ago

“Your hands up, you still getting shot,” 50 Cent raps on the chorus to “Ahhh Sh–,” addressing the recent shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, after witnesses said the 18-year-old had put his hands above his head before he was killed.

J.Cole Visits Ferguson

The track, which includes vocals from Fif, Kidd Kidd and Young Buck, was released on Monday (August 18), and opens and closes with audio footage captured from another recent incident involving law enforcement and the death of a civilian: When police tried to apprehend Eric Garner in New York in July. Police allegedly put Garner in a chokehold, which brought him to the ground; he died shortly thereafter.

“Ever since Mike Brown went down/ My whole city like, F–k a cop,” Buck raps on his verse.

We should be getting a mixtape and album from the Unit before the year is out.

The Onion Thinks Facebook’s Proposed ‘Satire’ Tag Is For ‘Dipsh–’s

by 1 min ago

Everyone has that one Facebook friend — you know the one. The one that sends us into giggling fits of superiority when s/he unintentionally posts articles from The Onion to Facebook as if they were fact.

“This is a movie for children!” they rage, linking to an article about the Ninja Turtles’ CGI-spun genitals. SMH, am I right?

Well, now those poor souls could be spared the embarrassment that is believing fake news, as Facebook is testing a new “Satire” tag — an occurrence that prompted The Onion to respond in characteristically tongue-in-cheek fashion with an article titled “Area Facebook User Incredibly Stupid.”

“Describing him as frequently frustrated and overwhelmed, sources confirmed Monday that local Facebook user Michael Huffman is incredibly stupid,” The Onion wrote. “‘I need stuff easy,’ said the absolute dipsh–, adding that he finds many things confusing, and that those things must be changed so that they make sense to him.”

“At press time, someone had reportedly fixed everything for the goddamn imbecile,” the piece concludes.

Apparently, users had, indeed, been asking for such a feature — likely not as hilariously as the nonexistent Huffman, however.

Mashable reported this past weekend that the new proposed Facebook feature would add a tag reading “[Satire]” to articles found in the related articles unit in our News Feeds.

“This is because we received feedback that people wanted a clearer way to distinguish satirical articles from others in these units,” a Facebook representative told Mashable.

Although it may be obvious ...

Anacondas Kind Of Do Like Big Butts And 5 Other Snake Facts

by 8 mins ago

Nicki Minaj‘s sure-to-be-twerktastic video for “Anaconda” is just around the corner, and to celebrate the VMA performer’s impending premiere, we’ve compiled some fascinating facts about its namesake: the anaconda. Like, the literal snake — not the other kind.

We hit up biologist Jesús A. Rivas, co-founder of The Anaconda Project, to find out more about the creature, and he pointed us to his website, which is packed to bursting with facts about Minaj’s favorite snake. We’ve compiled the ones more pertinent to the The Pinkprint singer below:

Nicki Minaj Is Performing ‘Anaconda’ At The 2014 VMAs: YASSS

1.) Anacondas are kind of polygamous — but it’s the female snake that gets to chill with multiple males

tumblr_mmjqcuNB9b1ql5yr7o1_500

Much like Nicki does in the song — despite her assertions of the contrary.

2.) The female is much larger than the male

2851

I guess they do, indeed, like big butts — or whatever the snake equivalent of a butt is.

3.) The largest snake in the world is the green anaconda

nicki-minaj-anaconda-thumb

But is it bigger than a tower?

4.) The largest anaconda that Rivas has measured is 18 feet

nicki-dr-evil

Not quite, then.

5.) They mostly eat birds and mammals

tumblr_lqcottJDfH1qkz0aa

So they don’t really dig buns, I guess — at least not the kind made of dough.

6.) An anaconda can, in fact, eat a person (although they probably haven’t ...

Ed Sheeran’s ‘Don’t’ Remix Gets Some MMG Flavor From Rick Ross: Listen

by 27 mins ago

Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t” is a song about a relationship gone awry and the sadness and confusion that come with that, so who better to get for the remix than Rick Ross?

Right?

Well, it may not sound like an obvious match on paper, but it kind of makes sense: Rozay has a history of remixing pop songs, like Lorde’s “Royals,” and Ed’s love for rap is well known. Plus, he’s got an upcoming collaborative album with Game.

And when we take things off of the paper and into our earbuds, it’s clear that Ricky’s gruff vocals give the X track remix a bit of an MMG feel. It’s a combo a fan of either guy can likely appreciate.

The two hung out back in September, and seem to have hit it off. We’ll take this for now, but how ’bout an original track next time, fellas?
