These Tattoos Will Make You So Jealous Your Flesh Will Tingle

by 17 mins ago

Chicago, IL – I may be biased, being a tattooed person currently hitting up Pitchfork Music Festival, but I’m going to go right ahead and say it – bias be damned! – the ink at Chicago’s most alt fest is pretty much the best to grace the flesh of any music fan.

During the first day of the fest, I wandered among the masses with my trusty photog, Radhika Marya, rudely interrupting folks while they grooved to Sharon Van Etten and The Haxan Cloak to ask them about their ink (which is a major faux pas, but now they’re on the Internet and therefore kind of famous so whatever!).

Check out our 8 favorite tats from day one and book an appointment with your local ink slinger ASAP because you’re jealous now, right?

1. Dolls And Tea

Christine from Buffalo, New York, is here to see Neutral Milk Hotel (aren’t we all?) but in the meantime she’s gracing passersby with her eclectic and glorious collection of adorable tattoos.

2. R2D2

Shawnedese, from Carbondale, Illinois, has an amazing array of “Star Wars” tattoos. He’s here to see Beck and also kind of looks like Beck (at least around the hair area).

3. Red Pepper

Shari hails from Durham, North Carolina, and is really stoked to see Perfect Pussy. We were really stoked to see that she had a pepper tattooed on her leg because what?! That’s some serious commitment to a seriously maligned veggie.

This Is What Missed Connections Look Like In Real Life

by 23 mins ago

Photos by Radhika Marya

Chicago, IL – I don’t know about you all, but I fall in love at least 10 times at every festival. (Hello, dude in the Metallica shirt! What’s your name, man grooving in a tweed jacket in the middle of July?) Luckily a gentleman named Craig has given us a list that we may use to find our lost future paramours. And for that we owe him many kitten kisses.

Well, Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival has done that dude one better – they have an IRL “Missed Connections” board. Analog-leaning folks rejoice!

Romantic that I am, I was pretty excited to stumble upon this massive board (pictured) studded with multi-colored slips of paper containing missives of lost love. Apparently, fest-goers can, if they like, peck their yearning letters on typewriters (because Pitchfork! Twee!). I, myself, struggled with the keys when I tried to write a letter to my lost youth, when I first attended this fest at age… well, never mind. Those with more nimble, non-arthritic, fingers may have better luck. But I digress…

If that special dude or lady sees your letter, they can hit up the volunteers on hand (who are way nice, by the way) who will stamp the slip of paper with the word “Connected.” Get this, a few hours into the first day of the festival there were already more than a few connected slips studding the board.

I may go add one myself right now… Watch out Monsieurs Metallica and Tweed!

2014 Best Hip-Hop Video Nominees Took Five Different Roads To VMAs

by 17 mins ago

Let’s face it: Rap videos can be like Mad Libs. Fill in the blanks with [expensive] car, exotic destination, liquor brand, nightclub of choice, some homeys. Compile. Complete. Not this year’s batch of MTV VMA nominees for Best Hip-Hop Video though.

What’s amazing about the 2014 crop is that each took a different approach to making a music video. Stylistically, visually, length-wise, even in the way that the clips engage with the viewer — every video stands on its own.

There may be only one winner, but there will be no losers in this category on Sunday, August 24. Here’s why.

Kanye West “Black Skinhead”
Release Date: July 21, 2013

Yeezy unleashed a fury with his “Black Skinhead” visual, his second from Yeezus. After a version of the video was leaked in early July ’13, ‘Ye delivered the official version a couple weeks later. There wasn’t much changed, other than an added interactive component, with a middle finger for a cursor. Kanye collaborated on the work with Nick Knight, who had previously shot West and wife Kim Kardashian, and later directed them in the “Bound 2″ video.

The “Skinhead” vid is as aggressive as the song itself, featuring a CGI version of the rap star, shirtless, gyrating on screen throughout, with occasional cuts to shots of ferocious-looking dobermans. Fitting, since there’s no doubt that ‘Ye’s a beast.

Eminem “Berzerk”
Release Date: September 9, 2013

On August 25, 2013, Eminem revealed the title of his upcoming album. The lead single from The Marshall ...

Jay Z Calls Angie Martinez During Her First Show On Power 105

by 7 mins ago

Well, that’s one way to start a new job.

During her show on Thursday (July 17) at Power 105 — her first with the station, following an announcement in June that she was leaving her longtime home at Hot 97Angie Martinez got a call from Jay Z. The talk came at the end of her time slot and lasted less than three minutes — the veteran radio personality actually rushed Hov off the phone, if you can believe it. But not before the rap legend could pay homage to The Voice of New York.

“I really believe that what you are about to accomplish in the next phase of your life will dwarf everything that you’ve ever done,” Jigga said, which prompted Angie to beg him to stop, because she was getting emotional. “Because, that’s what people that are great do. You’re not termed the voice of New York for no reason. You’re an instituion in radio. That’s a special feat to accomplish.”

After two decades at Hot 97, Martinez announced last month that she was leaving the station. If that wasn’t a surprise enough in itself, she piled it on days later by revealing she had signed on to join Hot’s NYC rival, Power 105.

Though he and his wife Beyonce are currently on their On The Run Tour — scheduled to perform in Houston on Friday — the Magna Carta Holy Grail rapper said that he was kickin’ it by a pond on the Hamptons.

Common And Lil Herb Tell The Truth About Chicago On ‘The Neighborhood’

by 1 min ago

Common is setting out to paint a picture of what life’s like for a young black kid in his native Chicago with his upcoming album, Nobody Smiling, and his newest release from the project does just that.

“The Neighborhood,” which dropped on Thursday (July 17), opens with James Fauntleroy singing a capella: “A thousand lives ago, we were young and we didn’t know we were trading our crowns for our souls.”

After 30 seconds of the crooner’s soothing voice describing a dark picture, the No I.D.-produced beat for the track drops, and Com launches into his first verse. “The hustlers was the tastemakers and trendsetters/ They the ones that fed us, hoping that the Feds don’t get us/ The era of Reagan and terror of Bush,” he raps at one point.

The song’s second verse is delivered by Lil Herb, A generation removed from the veteran rapper, but a fellow Chi-town native, he weaves similar tales: “Ain’t nobody stop the violence, why everybody keep lyin’/ N—as throw up peace signs, but everybody keep dying,” the up-and-comer laments.

Also on Thursday, Com dropped a teaser for the video for “Diamonds,” featuring Big Sean.

Nobody Smiling is set to hit stores on July 22.

Check Out This Footage Of A 19-Year-Old Kanye West Rapping

by 36 mins ago

Throwback Thursdays don’t get much better than this.

Complex, by way of DJ Eclipse, got a hold of some footage of a 19-year-old Kanye West rapping at the 1996 grand opening of a new location of legendary New York City record store Fat Beats.

Looking a little younger and thinner — naturally — Yeezy showed promise and glimpses of what was to come. “Tryna flex the technique, you get blasted with a TEC/ That sh– is mad ironic like Alanis Morissette,” he rapped.

Check out a description of that memorable day from Eclipse, who was the store’s general manager:

The original location of Fat Beats launched on July 14, 1994 which means FB just turned 20 years old! Business was doing so well 2 years in that Joseph Abajian decided to move the store from it’s small 9th St. basement space into a 2nd floor location on 6th Avenue. August 1996 (day?) was the grand opening of the 406 6th Avenue location. It was also the beginnings of our independent movement which had recently started bubbling about a year before.

Yesterday I started converting old Hi8 video tapes to DVD and came across some interesting footage from that day. Now we had a lot of the usual suspects in the place that day such as ILL BILL, Arsonists, Lord Finesse, Adagio, Breeze Brewin, A.L. Skills, Percee P, J-Live, Mr. Live, Chino XL, Al Tariq, Black Attack, Xzibit, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Rawcotiks, Ak Skills, Rob Swift, Roc Raida, DJ Spinna and ...

Is Punk Dead? Probably, Because Etsy Is Selling A Punk Rock Starter Kit

by 11 mins ago

There’s nothing punks hate more than inauthenticity. People that don’t fully buy-in to the punk ethos, or who don’t follow specific punk rules are immediately shunned as #posers by true punks. But now, even posers can blend in and rage against the machine with these handmade items!

Seriously, when punks get a load of this Punk Starter Kit on Etsy, they’re probably going to have a cow. A punk cow. With a studded bracelet. It’s basically the opposite of everything the punk lifestyle stands for—including the fact that it’s on the notoriously cutesy, girly site Etsy.

Here’s an excerpt from the post on Etsy:
“Did you recently see some punks at the mall, thought they looked sick and want to join the freak show?”

Is “freak show” really the appropriate label to use as a marketing tool here?

The post continues:
“Well now you can with the kit that has everything you need for the other punks to stop calling you a poser.”

Yes, because clothes, patches and spikes are all it takes to transform from a suburban Spice Girls stan into an avid Sex Pistols fan.

il_570xN.599636622_r5jc

Here’s verbatim what the kit includes:
- Bootstrap studded with small (your’re just starting out) 77 cone studs
-Bondage belt
-Studded bracelet with bondage wring
-Studded wristband
-Totalitar and Varukers patches
-Mystery goody!

Oooooh wonder what the mystery goody is? Could it be a book about anarchy? A Sid Vicious poster embedded with tiny, handmade spikes? But wait, there’s another extra that this Etsy user has included as an added bonus…

Ariana Grande’s Response To Her VMA Noms? All These Pretty Emoji

by 39 mins ago

So Ariana Grande finally woke up from cuddling with her fluffy ponytail and saw that she was nominated for three — count ‘em! three — 2014 MTV VMAs. Her reaction? Tons of gushing — and emojis.

I don’t know about you all, but I’ve been watching Ariana’s Twitter feed since the VMA nominations dropped, waiting for her to chime in after her last sleepy tweet: “goodnight for now (and good morning to some, I guess) haven’t slept properly in weeks. … i love u.”

After waking up in a green, green glade surrounded by forest creatures (I imagine), Grande was given the joyful news by a golden-haired prince on the back of a white horse, bearing a silver envelope on a bejeweled plate (again, this is speculation here). Her response:

The lovely emjoi included a heart with an arrow bursting through it, which seemed appropriate.

Arianators — who have already been up for hours voting for Grande’s “Problem” for “Best Female Video,” “Best Pop Video” and “Best Collaboration” — responded with proportionate glee.

The overwhelming sentiment? Why try for one when you can have three?

CLICK: 2014 MTV VMA Voting Is Open Now!

“U DESERVE THEM ALL,” tweeted @irwinsgirl13, while @Niki_Styless opined, “You deserve it queen.” @ariianasunshine confidentially stated, “YOU WILL WIN 3,” and Ariana was soon awash in a sea of “love you”s “yaaaaas”s and, probably, tears. Definitely tears.

Oh! And need we remind you that Grande is performing her new single Read More →

Bask In ’90s Awkwardness With These ‘Whoa!’-Worthy Forgotten ‘Blossom’ Moments

by 1 min ago

“Blossom” fans, this one’s for you. Today, we spotted a classic behind-the-scenes clip from the ’90s sitcom staple: Joey Lawrence — better known as Blossom’s lovably dim-witted brother, Joey Russo — coaching his younger brother and mini-me stand-in Matthew Lawrence on his signature “whoa!” catchphrase.

Which, of course, led us down a black hole of “Blossom” clips on YouTube. Enjoy the #ThrowbackThursday behind-the-scenes moment and two other “Whoa!”-worthy moments from the show.

1. Joey Lawrence Help His Little Brother Master ‘Whoa!’ Catchphrase

Matthew can’t quite pull it off like Joey does, and watching him struggle to master his brother’s effortless mono-syllabic phrase is almost as adorable as when Joey steps in to help him. The brothers are well-known for their loving relationship, and apparently, it goes way back; Matthew appeared on “Blossom” several times to play “Young Joey,” and this particular clip is taken from the episode “This Old House” which will air July 24 on Hub Network, in case you track that sorta thing.

2. Blossom Jumps Up And Down And Screams While Meeting Will Smith In An Elevator

Everybody’s dream celebrity crush during the Blossom era was the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, a.k.a Will Smith… a.k.a… Joe Piscopo? In the clip, Smith tells Blossom that he used the popular SNL comedian’s name for his hotel alias—a nice inside joke for audiences at the time.

3. Blossom Has An Extremely Awkward Make-Out Sesh With Johnny Galecki TKTK

Although he’s now a member of “The Big Bang Theory” cast, Johnny Galecki ...

Exclusive: Michael B. Jordan Says New ‘Fantastic Four’ Will Be Superheroes With ‘Disabilities’

by 7 mins ago

Michael B. Jordan is at a crossroads in his career. The talented actor is about to break out big for the first time, playing The Human Torch in FOX’s reboot of the Marvel superhero franchise “Fantastic Four.” But he’s appeared for years in critically acclaimed dramas like “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood,” and onscreen in “Fruitvale Station” and “That Awkward Moment.”

And with that wealth of experience behind him, Jordan is giving back. He’s teamed up with Sprite for the Sprite Films Challenge, a program that saw Jordan mentor young filmmakers, offering a wealth of advice from his experience while they compete in an Instagram contest to show off their filmmaking skills.

While on a short, much needed break from the set of “Fantastic Four,” Jordan talked exclusively to MTV News about why he’s taking on this mentoring project — and also gave out plenty of info about how reteaming with his “Chronicle” director Josh Trank has yielded a completely new interpretation of Marvel’s first family:

MTV News: This Sprite Films thing is definitely something different for you… How did you get involved, and how did it all get started?

Michael B. Jordan: I got involved a few months back. [At] CinemaCon in Las Vegas, I [was] encouraging first time filmmakers to be ambitious and take chances and risks, because you never know where your career is going to go. The fact that Sprite launched this program really encouraged filmmakers, basically from conception: write a pilot, write a script, giving them ...
