Heading To Pitchfork? 9 Reasons Chicago Is The Best Festival City

by 10 mins ago

If you’re heading down to the Pitchfork Music Festival this weekend you’re probably aware that it is in Chicago, because that is what your plane ticket says. However, are you aware that this makes Pitchfork a fest that is different from all other fests (it’s like Passover that way)? [Insert rousing rendition of Frank Sinatra's "Chicago" here.]

As someone who has attended Pitchfork many, many times (and resided in Chicago for half a decade) I have compiled a handy list for first-timers below that highlights why it’s a wholly unique experience to attend a fest in The Second City the city that still haunts my dreams with its storied streets and pervasive chocolate smell. But I’m getting ahead of myself…

1. You Can Have A Cheezborger, Cheezborger, Cheezborger

A famous “Saturday Night Live” sketch, seen here, was inspired by Chicago’s iconic Billy Goat Tavern. One of the outposts of said tavern is walking distance from Pitchfork’s Union Park location. You know what you have to do.

2. You Might Just Hear ‘The Super Bowl Shuffle’

“The Super Bowl Shuffle” is a bizarre sports novelty song recorded by the Chicago Cubs in 1985. It exists on many Chicago bar jukeboxes. At the beginning of the year, a cadre of Pitchfork-esque bands (including Man Man, My Morning Jacket and Les Savy Fav) recorded their own version of the jam. Hearing said song on your trip to ...

‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Mobile Game? You’re Welcome

by 1 min ago

Before “Guardians Of The Galaxy” hits theaters on August 1, Disney Interactive has a special treat for you: “Guardians of the Galaxy: The Universal Weapon,” a companion game to the film that also has ties to Marvel’s comic book and video game universes.

Fans familiar with other Marvel games like “Avengers Alliance” and “Avengers Initiative” will know the drill: “Universal Weapon” uses elements of the movie-verse (costumes and plot points in particular), while tying into the overall story of the gaming universe.

“[We created] an original story that has some parallels both to the film, in terms of leading characters, and parallel to what stories have already been told in the comics that creates something new,” Aaron Norstad, the producer of the game, told MTV News over the phone. “This isn’t necessarily a spoiler persay, if you play the game first before seeing the film or if you see the film first before playing the game, the two complement each other.”

In order to strike that delicate balance between movie, comics and gaming, Disney went to an expert: Dan Abnett, who wrote the “Guardians of The Galaxy” comic books the movie is based on, also wrote the game.

Another little item of note that probably helped, Marvel Studios snuck their Disney Interactive cohorts a copy of the “Guardians” movie script, so they could properly prep. However, in this case, knowledge wasn’t necessarily power. Once they found out what was happening in the movie, the developers needed to promptly push those plot points ...

Need To Know: Who’s Marrying Winnie Cooper?

by 32 mins ago

With additional reporting by Janelle Myers

What Would Kevin Arnold Think?
Sorry, Winnie Cooper fans, but your beloved “Wonder Years” girl-next-door is officially off the market! Danica McKellar took to Twitter and Instagram to break the news (and a lot of hearts) that she is engaged to her boyfriend Scott Sveslosky.

Usually Dead Grandfathers Leave You More Money…
Emma Stone told David Letterman Wednesday that she believes that her dead grandfather is leaving her quarters everywhere she goes. She revealed that there is a long family history with quarters and is CONVINCED that there is no other explanation for the mysterious appearance of these coins. Oh yeah, and did I mention Emma has never actually met him?

Drizzy And Breezy Patch Things Up
Drake and Chris Brown have definitely squashed their beef in this skit featured on the ESPYs Wednesday night. If you recall the two were involved in a brawl at an NYC nightclub back in 2012, but Breezy’s cameo in this skit mainly starring Drake and Blake Griffin and this photo of them working in the studio prove that they’re all good.

Selena, What Does Tat Say?
Selena Gomez sports some new ink on her back, but at first glance you won’t know what it says unless you understand Arabic. She asked NYC-based celebrity tattoo artist Bang Bang to etch “Love Yourself First” on her skin, and in a E! News interview Bang Bang revealed that the singer wanted to get ...

Watch Vic Mensa Perform ‘Feel That’ On ‘Wild ‘N Out’

by 7 hours ago

“Wild ‘N Out” kept its streak of great performances alive Wednesday night (July 16) when Vic Mensa hit the stage to treat the crowd to his latest single, “Feel That.”

Just like with the audio, the Chicago native brought unfiltered energy with his performance of the song, whose video dropped earlier today.

“The video completely reflects the vibe of the song,” he told MTV News recently. “I see music in colors and this one was like green, orange, purple, dark hues and that’s what the video is.”

And the idea for the song came out of a late night studio session.

“Me and [Smoko Ono] was in the studio one day and I’d made a different record, and then I was like, ‘man, put on the beat, lemme just freestyle over over one of your beats,’” he said. “It was like middle of the night — we’d been in the studio all evening — I was talking sh– in the booth, and I said ‘I feel that.’”

We feel it, too, and so did the crowd at “Wild ‘N Out.”

Drake Sang Two Fake Songs At The ESPYs And They Could Probably Both Turn Into Hits

by 26 mins ago

Drake has seemed like a natural all night onstage hosting the ESPY Awards — from delivering his jokes, to pre-taped skits to the few times he danced. But never was he in his comfort zone as much as during his performance of two parody songs specially written for the show.

“Honorable Mention” and “Side Pieces” (with a guest spot from Brian McKnight) may have been written as jokes — poking fun at runners up in sports and, well, side pieces, respectively — but they were seriously good. Seriously. Give ‘em a listen yourself.

Drake And Chris Brown Poke Fun At Their Beef In Hilarious ESPYs Skit

by 36 mins ago

When we heard rumors that Drake and Chris Brown would share some screen time at the ESPYs on Wednesday night (July 16), we didn’t know what to expect. But to be honest, we didn’t expect something as great as this.

Toward the end of a skit that mainly starred Drizzy and NBA All-Star Blake Griffin — it positioned the two as friends turned foes who were seeking revenge by playing heinous practical jokes on one another — Breezy appeared. Griffin had snuck in to be Drake’s surgeon during an appendectomy, which would have been bad enough given the circumstances of the skit.

And then it turned out CB would actually be the one with the sharp objects in his hand while Drake lied on the operating table.

In case you somehow missed it, Drake and Chris Brown have a bit of a thorny history. In 2012, the two and their entourages were involved in a bar brawl in New York City, and things didn’t seem to cool off for a while, either. Though there were reports last year that the two had put their differences aside, the ESPYs skit — showing their willingness to work together and play off of each other and their past — seems to be our best evidence to date of that claim being a reality.

(Chris also poked fun at his own image, calling himself “America’s Sweetheart” towards the end of the sketch.)

The clip came just days after the two ...

Watch The Selfie Become Powerful And Inspiring In This Time-Lapse Video

by 12 mins ago

A lot can change in six years, and one U.K.-based film student captured all of those changes in a powerful video in which she grapples with depression and other issues via a series of daily selfies.

“Hello, my name is Rebecca Brown and that was six and a half years of my life,” the 21 year old says at the end of the four-minute video. “Pretty scary stuff.” We tend to agree — but we would also add the word “inspiring.”

The video begins with a fresh-faced Brown at age 15, ticking through roughly 2,100 photos — according to the caption — as the girl grows up. Captions inform us of heartbreaks and new friendships, as well as issues with trichotillomania, which compels people to pull out their hair, and depression, which drove Brown to suicidal thoughts. “Life happens, Depression hit rather hard. I’m on the mend,” she says in the caption.

It’s a stirring portrait of a life in progress and all the pitfalls and triumphs even a short amount of time can contain.

Brown is not done with her selfie project, though, even after posting the video. “I intend to do the project for as long as I can, it’s still going,” she says.

We’re interested to see what the next six years bring — hopefully more triumphs than anything else.

Conor Oberst Responds To The Woman Who Falsely Accused Him Of Rape

by 42 mins ago

The comments section of a story on the site XOJane set off a legal battle between Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst and a woman who falsely accused him of rape, and spawned a series of scarring events for the singer these past seven months. But on Wednesday (July 16), the Oberst seemed ready to “move forward” when he publicly accepted his accuser’s apology.

“I have accepted Joanie Faircloth’s apology and retraction to clear my name,” Oberst said in a statement, according to Pitchfork. “This has been extremely difficult and stressful for me personally and for those I love. I’m appreciative of the family, friends, fans, and business partners who supported me throughout this and look forward to happier times as we all move forward with our lives.”

At the end of last year, Faircloth (a.k.a. Joan Elizabeth Harris) left a series of comments under a story about an abusive rock-star boyfriend on XOJane, claiming that she had been raped by Oberst 10 years ago when she was 16. The comments were soon removed, but the damage had been done and the story spread around the Web like proverbial wildfire.

Oberst filed a $1 million defamation suit earlier this year against the woman, according to NME, stating that Faircloth’s accusation was damaging to his reputation and that she was “just an embittered superfan, who gushed about him and Bright Eyes as recently as January 2013.”

Rumors were flying that Oberst had been dropped from his label, ...

Cam’ron And Nicki Minaj Tell A Break-Up Tale On ‘So Bad’

by 19 mins ago

Back in May, Cam’ron told MTV News that he’d have some huge names on his upcoming monthly 1st of the Month EP series — from 2 Chainz to Wiz Khalifa. And on Tuesday (July 15), he released “So Bad,” with arguably his most highly-anticipated collab: Nicki Minaj.

The song also features a hook from singer Yummy, who laments, “I really thought we coulda worked it out,” over surprisingly upbeat production. Cam and Nicki, who each deliver one verse, take this narrative and run with it, rhyming about a relationship gone awry.

“I mean I love you, I’m frontin’, the feeling’s mutual/ But you ain’t gettin’ me back, man, you delusional/ I shoulda been left your ass, huh?/ Oh, that chickenhead you f–kin’ wit’? Ask her,” Nicki raps.

The track was originally released — minus a verse from Ms. Minaj — back in 2012. This version will appear on the upcoming 1st of the Month: Vol. 2.

The music video, which you can preview below, drops in full on Wednesday.
