The “D” is silent, but the “B,” “E” and “T” were all loud and proud for actor Jamie Foxx.
Foxx won the Best Actor award at the 2013 BET Awards for his turn as the heroic slave turned bounty hunter in Quentin Tarantino’s Foxx attended the show dressed in all white, wearing a T-shirt to remember shooting victim Trayvon Martin. Despite the somber attire, Foxx was all smiles as he danced up to the stage, accepting his award from Kevin Hart. With Hart right next to him, Foxx took the opportunity to make some public business negotiations.
“Kevin Hart, can we do a movie together? Can we do a comedy together? I’m doing all this to get with you, man,” Foxx called out to the comedian, with fans cheering in the background.
“Turn it up baby,” was Hart’s enthusiastic reply — so if you see an announcement about a Foxx-Hart buddy comedy in the near future, you know where the idea started.
“First of all, I got the chance to meet some acting gods in my life,” Foxx began his acceptance speech. “Sidney Poitier, who saw me after ‘Ray’ and said, ‘I saw you one time, at a party … I give you responsibility.’ What he was saying is, we have to be responsible for our work.”
“I want to give a shout-out to Quentin Tarantino for doing a cold-blooded movie that everyone was a little nervous about, I ain’t gonna kid you,” he continued. “But it ended up being alright. It was a superhero. We’re living in a world of Djangos now. Jay-Z Django, Kanye Django, 2Chainz Django, J. Cole Django. It’s your own interpretation of what you want to do, and what you want your life to be.”
Foxx wasn’t the only “Django Unchained” actor to walk away with a BET Award in hand. His co-star Kerry Washington won Best Actress, not for her turn as Broomhilda von Shaft in the Tarantino-directed thriller, but for her work at the lead of ABC’s political drama “Scandal,” in which she plays crisis management superstar Olivia Pope.
“Django” did not take the award for Best Movie, however. That top honor went to “Think Like a Man,” starring the aforementioned Hart and a host of other well-known faces including Taraji P. Henson and Romany Malco. The romantic comedy beat out the likes of “Django,” “Sparkle,” “Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap” and “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”
