Big Tymers fans were thrown for a loop earlier this year when Birdman said that he, Lil Wayne and Drake were doing a group album without original member Mannie Fresh, but now they can rest easy.
On Wednesday’s (July 24) episode of “RapFix Live” the #1 Stunna told show host Sway Calloway that he and Fresh plan to hit the studio in the next week or two.
“I’ve been talking to Fresh a lot. We talk every other day, we been talking about doing music; so matter of fact we gonna get in,” Birdman announced. “Me and Fresh ain’t got no problem, we never had no problem. It’s been a minute and we plan on working again.”
The Cash Money co-founder is in New York promoting the release of his new Rich Gang compilation, which hit stores on Tuesday. The album features contributions from Birdman, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Future, R. Kelly and Chris Brown and while Rich Gang is the project that Baby is focused on at the moment, he definitely has an eye toward the future.
Back in May, Lil Wayne told MTV News for the first time that he, Drake and Birdman could possibly put out a new Big Tymers LP. The original incarnation of the group featured Birdman and former Cash Money producer Mannie Fresh. The duo’s first LP, How You Luv That, came out in 1998, and their final album, Big Money Heavyweight, dropped 10 years ago, in 2003. Fresh left Cash Money shortly after.
A few days after Wayne’s announcement, Birdman appeared on “RapFix Live” and confirmed that the project was a go, but said that original Cash Money producer Fresh would not be a part of it.
It is a story that MTV News has been following every step of the way. Mannie Fresh also checked in with “RapFix Live” on May 15 and while he praised Wayne and Drake, he felt any upcoming collabo wouldn’t be a Big Tymers LP. “You can call it whatever you want to call it, but you can’t call it a Big Tymers album,” he protested.
Birdman says he tuned into that “RapFix” episode and he and Mannie have been working on a reunion ever since. “I was been tryin’ to do that, he didn’t wanna do it. I thought personally he didn’t want no part of it because it been dead. We been lettin’ it live in the grave, ain’t nobody picked it up,” Baby explained. “It was Wayne’s decision to say let’s rock with this Big Tymers, besides that it’s been in the grave, nobody touched it.”
While the two have had differences in the past, Birdman maintains that the drama was never that serious. “I love his family, he loves my family, we know each other,” he said. “His sister passed, my sister passed, I went to the funeral so people bring things outta context but personally he’s my brother and I got nothing but love for him and I’ma work with him again.”
