Naked Handstands Are One Way To Protest The iPhone 6

by 1 min ago

If you’re sick of upgrading all your tech gear every time a new product launches, a naked guy halfway across the world is doing a handstand just for you.

“The Naked Handstander” (NSFW photos) is a guy who, for the past five years, has been doing handstands all over the world — without clothes, natch — to raise awareness for planned obsolescence, a fancy term for expensive stuff becoming obsolete, which he describes as “the deliberate shortening of a product’s useful life in order to force the consumer to buy or ‘upgrade’ over and over and over again…in the name of Profit and Greed.”

Trolltunga, Norway

The first naked handstand took place in Vik, Iceland way back in May 2009. Since then, he’s donned his birthday suit for the cause in Australia, the U.S., China, Sweden, Norway, and Thailand, among many other countries.

“I’m not exactly sure what triggered the first naked handstand, it just came naturally,” he told the Independent.

New York

The Naked Handstander points out on his blog that our clothes are falling apart faster than they used to and that, in general, products aren’t made to last a long time because companies want you to re-purchase the items that break. And that’s how you end up with three outdated, just-broken-enough-so-that-it’s-unusable phones or mp3 players or laptops stuffed at the bottom of your desk drawer.

The Naked Handstander is, as expected, not too happy about the recent iPhone 6 ...

Jessie Ware’s Video For ‘Say You Love Me’ Is Just Singing & Feelings

by 1 min ago

Jessie Ware has always been an emotional and expressive singer, but it has never been more obvious than on her new single, “Say You Love Me.” The video for the track is as stripped down as music videos get these days — it really lets the song speak for itself. Perched on a rock for the entirety of the video, Ware belts out the lyrics to seemingly no one, often boldly staring straight into the camera.

For such a passionate ballad, the video is just enough.

The 29-year-old announced via Twitter she’ll be releasing her sophomore album, Tough Love, on October 6. We were so mesmerized by Devotion, it’s hard to imagine what adding Ed Sheeran and Miguel into the mix will create, and we can’t wait!

Dear Grimes: Here’s Why You Should Reconsider Trashing Your New Record

by 30 mins ago

So, Grimes… Word on the street is that you’re scrapping your upcoming record and starting anew. We trust your judgment and everything — and your taste in shower-to-night footwear — but we have to ask: Are you suuuuure? And we’re not just saying that because we want new music so badly it hurts.

The New York Times reported Friday (September 12) that you said that your new music “sucked,” so you “threw it out and started again.” You also told the Grey Lady that your song “Go,” which you initially penned for Rihanna, didn’t rub your fans the right way. “It upsets a lot of my fans, and I get why it upsets them,” you said. “Everybody was like, ‘Oh, Grimes is pandering to the radio.’”

We get it. We get the need to innovate and create work that’s truly indicative of who you are. Your current situation — chilling in LA, making music and hanging with friends — also sounds pretty rad. But, we also have to wonder: Was the entire record worth scraping? Wasn’t there something there you think you might want to save?

So, dear Grimes, before you take out the trash, allow us to direct you to three hit projects that would never happened if the artist in question had given up. In the end, lady, we trust you — “Oblivion” was rad, after all, and you destroyed Pitchfork this year — but, you know… Just read on.

Stephen King literally threw away “Carrie”…

Katniss Plus ‘The Dark Knight’ Equals These Awesome Batniss Posters

by 9 mins ago

It’s a crossover so perfect, we can’t believe we didn’t think of it ourselves: “The Hunger Games” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.”

Think about it: they’re both dark stories about a reluctant hero, tasked with saving their people. Both Batman and Katniss are sometimes framed as vigilantes or enemies to the people, and, hey, they both are represented by winged animals, but neither of them have actual wings on their bodies. Separated at birth? Maybe!

The Quarter Quell thinks so, as Effie Trinket herself, Elizabeth Banks, noticed.

Fansite QuarterQuellOrg made these fantastic posters for a crossover between the two, which Banks charmingly referred to as “Batniss.” We dig ‘em.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ hits theaters November 21, and we don’t know if “The Dark Katniss Rises” will ever be real, but we’d totally watch it if it was.

Prepare For GIF Overload, Because Jennifer Lawrence Is Hosting The 2015 Met Ball

by 11 mins ago

Dior darling and GIF-able superstar Jennifer Lawrence has something new to add to her resumé besides “Oscar winner,” and “Most Likely To Fall In Public.” She’s officially been named a co-chair for the 2015 Met Ball, where the theme will be “Chinese Whispers: Tales of the East in Art, Film and Fashion.” Naturally.

Jennifer follows in the footsteps of last year’s co-chairs, Sarah Jessica Parker (whose mohawk she fondled at the 2013 Met Gala) and Bradley Cooper (whose mouth she’s fondled in multiple movies), and will be joined by fellow co-chairs Marissa Mayer, Gong Li, Silas Chou, Wendi Murdoch, and of course, Vogue‘s HBIC Anna Wintour.

While this announcement is exciting enough to tide me over until The Hunger Games comes back, I still have a whole bunch of questions. Has Wintour been a closet Katniss fanatic all this time? Does being a “co-chair” mean JLaw gets to sit on any kind of throne? Will she rock a dress embroidered with Coldplay lyrics? Does the internet have the space to accommodate the sheer number of faces she’ll make while greeting everyone on the red carpet? AM I EMOTIONALLY READY FOR THIS? *fans self with copy of Mockingjay*

Something tells me she’ll ~slay~ as usual, if only because everything she touches turns to hilarious, awkward, GIF-ready gold. You should get a head start on preparing your mind ...

Calvin Harris, John Newman And A Bunch Of Sad Models Hook Up For ‘Blame’ Video

by 4 mins ago

Calvin Harris has his serious face on in his latest music video “Blame,” and it looks good. The Scottish DJ makes a few appearances in the video alongside the track’s vocalist, John Newman, but this video’s narrative is more about the ladies. While the men seem to be deep in thought, scantily clad women fill every scene — whether it’s in the bedroom, a hot tub or the club.

Directed by Emil Nava, the video takes a fairy-tale turn once the ladies start disappearing into puddles, sinks and buckets of champagne; they eventually end up together in a large chaotic swimming pool. Fear not, though, because just as the sun comes up all the girls make it to the surface … but there’s no sign of the boys.

Calvin broke yet another Spotify record with this track — it’s already #1 since its release on September 7, making it the fastest-climbing song ever. The DJ/producer recently became the first British recording artist to have over 1 billion streams on Spotify.

11 Musical Moments That Prove ‘Gilmore Girls’ Was The Most Hipster Show On TV

by 9 mins ago

In the dark era before everyone knew what Pitchfork was and music flowed as sweetly and abundantly as rainwater through the many tributaries of the Web, there were scant few places for weird suburban teens who loved tunes to feel like they belonged. One of the lights in the darkness, undoubtedly, was a little show called “Gilmore Girls,” replete with literary references, copious tunes and more autumnal scenes than one could shake a just-turned-scarlet leaf at.

And, friends, that miraculous show is primed to make a reentrance into the pop-cultural zeitgeist, as come October 1, the whole series will be invading Netflix accounts — and weird, alt-teen hearts — around the globe.

In honor of the early ’00s show’s return to the small and big screen, we’ve complied a list of musical moments that prove just how hipster the ladies of Stars Hollow were — before the word gotten dragged into the mainstream and slapped on everyone wearing a plaid shirt with a predilection for synth-pop.

1.) Rory Totally Discovered The Shins

gilmore-girls-gif4

Before “Garden State” and Zach Braff made The Shins a totally mainstream thing (lives were changed before you existed, oh! Natalie Portman-spun manic pixie dream girl), Rory asserted her loner status by listening to “Know Your Onion!” alone at her prep school lunch table. (The band was also on a weird college episode in which Rory and Paris kissed on Spring Break to impress dudes.)

Jay-Z, Snooki, Jon Hamm And More: Find Out The Stars’ Favorite Baseball Teams!

by 18 mins ago

The MLB postseason begins in just three weeks, and a slew of famous sports fans can’t wait to be taken out to the ball game.

That’s right: Celebs ranging from Jay-Z to Jon Hamm will be watching the action on television just like us — or sitting in the stands (likely behind home plate, because stardom comes with serious perks). But don’t expect to find them all under the same stadium roof, as not every star cheers for the same team.

So who’s rooting for who? Check out our list of celebrity fans to find out and be sure to get your baseball fix with “Off The Bat from the MLB Fan Cave” every Sunday at 11/10c on MTV2:

No surprise here. The man behind “Empire State of Mind” is a die-hard New York Yankees fan, which most of you may or may not have figured out from Hov’s signature hat.

Snooki also roots for a New York team, but it’s not the Bronx Bombers. Here she is on a date night with her then-boyfriend (and now fiance) Jionni at the New York Mets’ Home Opener in 2011 — long before Lorenzo and a bun in the oven kept her busy!

Lil’ Kim’s Hard Core Mixtape Has Arrived

by 27 mins ago

Lil’ Kim is back. Just a few months after the birth of her baby girl, the Brooklyn rapper delivers her 12-track Hard Core mixtape. Fans were so exited to hear the project that they crashed her site on Thursday night, but we’re back up and running now.

Features include Jadakiss, French Montana, Yo Gotti and Cassidy and the tape starts with men discussing the effects of that iconic poster of Kim squatting in the promo for her 1996 debut album Hard Core (over Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” beat nonetheless).

Stream Hard Core below.

This is what the positive reviews look like:
