In the pilot of his new show “The Leftovers,” it was pretty damn clear that Damon Lindelof wanted to make a clear statement that, no, this isn’t “Lost 2.0.”

The bleaker than bleak tone of that first episode carried over into the second, entitled “Penguin One, Us Zero,” further differentiating itself from the hit ABC show that Lindelof created with J.J. Abrams… But one facet of the show is looking more and more familiar by the week: the main character.

There are plenty of differences between Justin Theroux’s Kevin Garvey and Matthew Fox’s Jack Shepherd, but a few defining characteristics are beginning to line up in interesting ways.

Broken Marriage
The major twist of the pilot revealed that Laurie, the eager recruiter for the Guilty Remnant, was in fact Chief Garvey’s wife, who up until that point was suspected of disappearing with the missing two percent. The distinction showed that there was a different kind of loss within the world of “The Leftovers” and established Garvey as someone whose life shattered into pieces; pieces that are still very much a part of his life.

His drunken visit to the G.R. to bring Laurie home felt similar to Jack’s struggles with Sarah, the woman whose spine he fixed and then married. Their failed marriage and the paranoia around her affair became a defining storyline for Jack pre-crash, and already in “The Leftovers,” we’re seeing the wreckage that Laurie’s departure has left in its wake.

There’s no escape from the “Dead.”

With four months between now and the return of “The Walking Dead,” AMC is wasting no time getting the hype machine back in action. The basic cable channel aired a full series “Walking Dead” marathon over the holiday weekend, capped off with a special “Talking Dead” that previewed a new scene from the upcoming fifth season.

Check that scene out for yourself:

Nothing too mind-blowing; it’s just Carol and Tyreese, hiking through the forest, doing their best to protect themselves and Baby Judith Grimes from an oncoming horde of walkers. It’s basically exactly where we left that storyline off — and, in fairness, it’s probably the only story that the “Walking Dead” team can show off right now, considering that literally every other major character is currently imprisoned at Terminus right now.

Or are they?

An earlier preview suggests that folks like Daryl, Maggie, Glenn and more may already be on the run in season five’s earliest episodes, based on interview footage that showed many of the show’s cast members in the same forest setting we see in the Tyreese/Carol clip. Could a jail break be on the immediate horizon when “Walking Dead” returns? Will the prisoners of the “A” train bust out before Carol and Tyreese even have the chance to help them out?

“If I Stay” is probably best known in advance for its heartbreaking premise; it tells the story of Mia, age 17, who is caught in comatose limbo with a terrible choice to make after an accident kills her whole family.

But this new featurette from the film’s French distributor proves that “If I Stay”— or “Si Je Reste,” in French — won’t be just a non-stop sob-fest, as we get a glimpse of Mia (Chloë Grace Moretz) in some of her happiest moments from her life before the tragedy. A cello is involved. Also, lots and lots of smooching with cutie-pie boyfriend, Adam (Jamie Blackley).

In addition to highlighting the way that music, and love, and love of music all weave together to form the heart of Mia’s life, the clips seen here offer the first good look at Moretz playing her cello, a skill she learned just for the role. “If I Stay” hits theaters August 22.

Right now, there are few bigger dreams for a movie nerd than to visit the set of “Star Wars: Episode VII,” the upcoming revival of the “Star Wars” franchise courtesy of Disney and Lucasfilm. And one movie nerd got to actualize that very vision: Kevin Smith.

The “Clerks” and “Mallrats” director posted a photo of himself on the “Episode VII” set about a week ago, but at the time, he said there was nothing he was allowed to say about the visit.

“[All] I can share are this old Bantha-Tracks subscriber’s tears and snotty nose of joy,” he wrote about the experience. “The Force is WITH this movie.”

But during a recent appearance at Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland (via THR) over the weekend, Smith was able to talk more about what he experienced on the “Star Wars” set — if not in exact details, then at least in broad enough strokes to hammer home some of the far-away galaxy’s cool new details.

“What I saw I absolutely loved,” he said. “It was tactile, it wasn’t a series of f—ing green and blue screens in which later on digital characters would be added. It was there it was happening.”
