Michael Bay Tells ‘Transformers’ Fans: ‘Let Them Hate’

by 27 mins ago

With Reporting by Josh Horowitz

A little tension goes a long way, at least where Michael Bay is concerned.

The “Transformers: Age of Extinction” filmmaker spoke with MTV News in Hong Kong about his relationship with fans of the “Transformers” franchise. Everyone has an opinion about Optimus Prime, from fans of the Autobot leader’s 1980s roots to his current incarnation on the big-screen. And while some of these fans are vocally against Bay’s vision of “Transformers,” the director himself is all about the outcry.

“They love to hate, and I don’t care; let them hate,” he told MTV’s Josh Horowitz. “They’re still going to see the movie! I think it’s good to get a little tension. Very good.”

“I used to get bothered by it,” he continued, “but I think it’s good to get the dialogue going. It makes me think, and it keeps me on my toes, so it’s good.”

In fact, Bay’s flirtation with fan ire doesn’t end with “Transformers.” He’s the producer of this summer’s coming “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” directed by Jonathan Liebesman. Like “Transformers,” the “Ninja Turtles” reboot has been the subject of some online debate. But with “Age of Extinction” now finally hitting theaters, Bay is only now starting to think about what the reaction to “Turtles” might be.

“I’m just starting to get into that more,” he said. “The Turtles are great looking, so we’ll see.”

“Transformers: Age of Extinction” is in theaters now.

‘Reading Rainbow’ Kickstarter Gets New Ally In Seth MacFarlane

by 40 mins ago

He’s best known for his crude humor and pop culture references, but Seth MacFarlane’s interests extend beyond the realm of comedy and into the world of education.

Case in point: The “Family Guy” and “American Dad” creator has made a massive pledge to LeVar Burton’s “Reading Rainbow” Kickstarter campaign. MacFarlane has promised to match every dollar pledged in the five remaining days of the Kickstarter campaign, up to $1 million.

“This all means one thing: there has never been a better time to bring new people into this campaign,” Burton wrote on the “Reading Rainbow” Kickstarter page. “Every new dollar you add to your pledge, or spend on an add-on reward, or convince your friends and relatives to add, will get us two dollars to help schools.”

The “Reading Rainbow” Kickstarter is designed to bring the educational program to web-connected homes and classrooms across the nation. In meeting its initial $1 million goal, “Reading Rainbow” will already be available in over 1,500 classrooms at no cost to schools. A $5 million stretch goal was designed to make “Reading Rainbow” available to 7,500 classrooms, but thanks to MacFarlane’s pledge, reaching the $5 million goal will add an additional $1 million to the cause — meaning if the stretch goal is reached, “Reading Rainbow” will be available in 12,500 classrooms across the country.

It’s not MacFarlane’s first major effort on the educational front. He’s also an executive producer on “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey,” the educational program hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.

No More Snow: Is The ‘Huntsman’ Sequel Moving Forward Without Kristen Stewart?

by 31 mins ago

Snow White’s “Twilight” days may be over.

Universal Pictures is pushing forward with a sequel to “Snow White and the Huntsman,” the gritty fairy tale adaptation that saw Kristen Stewart playing the legendary princess, with “Thor” star Chris Hemsworth as her Huntsman. But according to one source, only one of those two will be involved in the sequel.

“Kristen Stewart is not expected to return for ‘SWATH 2,’” reports The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider, “which is expected to emphasize Chris Hemsworth’s role as the titular Huntsman.”

That’s a big blow for fans who flocked to the first film specifically because of Stewart’s involvement. But perhaps there’s something to be said for following the Huntsman on his own adventures without being tied to the Snow story.

One encouraging sign for the sequel is its new director: Frank Darabont, the visionary filmmaker responsible for “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile.” He’s also the man who originally adapted “The Walking Dead” for AMC, before his unceremonious departure from the series at the start of season two. His unique visual style and eye for finding light through dark themes could work wonders with the tale of the Huntsman.

What do you make of Stewart’s possible “Snow White” departure?

‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’: What the Critics Think of Michael Bay’s Latest

by 5 mins ago

So it looks like Mark Wahlberg isn’t the only one who’s found a Transformer, you guys. As the latest installment in Michael Bay‘s robotic movie franchise, “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” hits theaters, Optimus Prime and his buddies have gotten the once-over from film critics. You know, in order to help you decide whether or not the nearly 3-hours-long (really) robot epic is worth your dollars and time.

Eschewing the Shia LaBeouf-iness of installments past, the newest iteration finds Wahlberg in the hero’s seat (one of the main reasons the sequel got made), with the likes of Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer along for the ride. After a mega-battle has left a once-great city in utter ruins, a new form of evil steps up to the plate in an attempt to change the course of history and take over the world. Thanks to Optimus Prime and the other Autobots (alongside Wahlberg, too, of course), a war of good versus evil is fought in the name of saving the planet.

Still the question begs: should you see it? Well that’s what critics are for — to help inform your opinion before heading out to IMAX it up. Whether you do is up to you, but we’ve rounded up a few opinions in the meantime to help you make up your mind.

Mark Wahlberg Does the Heavy Lifting

‘Free Agents’ No Longer! Get The Inside Story On Nanhutta’s Blossoming Romance

by 9 mins ago

Free Agents” host TJ Lavin said racing to the top of Volcano Villarrica would be the hardest thing the game’s competitors would ever have to do, but evidently, he’s never tried to strike up a romance in the “Challenge” house.

This season, after a drunken, jokey proposal, Nany and Cohutta realized they had genuine feelings for each other. The epiphany scared the sh** out of Nany, and to cope (and possibly to sabotage her shot at something real), she decided to sleep with Johnny Reilly. But Southern charmer Cohutta wouldn’t be deterred and continued to work his way into Nany’s heart until the day he was eliminated.

On tonight’s “Free Agents” reunion special, after Nany laid into Johnny Bananas for trying to mess things up between her and Cohutta by airing her dirty laundry (literally — he found Johnny Reilly’s underwear on the couch), something special happened. Cohutta let go of his own misgivings about a serious relationship and made it official with the woman he said smells like “wild honeysuckle blossom.” It was nothing short of magic.

“I’ve never felt more appreciated,” Cohutta told host Jonny Moseley, before turning to face Nany. “So, will you go to the prom with me?”

Nany accepted. But could this thing really work?

Well, considering what Cohutta recently shared with MTV News, we have no doubts. The competitor says in the interview clip below that he couldn’t hold Nany accountable for her partying in the house (“Nany ...

Did Johnny Bananas And Laurel Deserve Their ‘Free Agents’ Payday?

by 8 mins ago

Instinct might tell the average person to flee from Villarrica, one of Chile’s most active volcanoes. But shelving common sense and racing to the top just made two “Free Agents” $125,000 richer.

After two days, five legs and 25 miles on a stationary bike (how cruel!), Johnny Bananas officially walked away with his fifth championship check on tonight’s finale, while three-time runner-up Laurel finally got the gold medal she deserved. But the difference between first and second was nearly negligible on both sides.

Though Laurel came out on a tear on the women’s side, winning the first two heats decisively, “Real World: Las Vegas” export Nany passed her on the third leg, which involved ascending a vertical wall. As far as cumulative time was concerned, Laurel won by nine minutes, but Nany stayed on her tail until the very end of the race and nipped at her heels until the very top of Villarrica.

FinalDevyn

Devyn, who wasn’t sure she had what it took to endure the tall task, finished long after her fellow competitors. But as far as TJ Lavin was concerned, she was MVP for digging as deeply as she did. Bravo, D!

On the men’s side, it was a consistent two-man race between Bananas and the other Johnny. Bananas started out in front, but Johnny took the lead in leg two, only to lose it once more in the third heat. Bananas took the fourth as well, but in ...
