‘Clarence’ Almost Featured Cartoon Network’s First Gay Kiss

To kiss or not to kiss? That is the question Cartoon Network faced when considering whether to air a kiss between two gay male characters on one of its new shows, “Clarence.”

If you missed the très français double-kiss on the cheek from last week’s “Neighborhood Grill” episode, here’s the scene in question.

According to Spencer Rothbell, a writer for the animated series, the network decided to downgrade the potentially groundbreaking moment from a smooch on the lips to a more ambiguous kiss on the cheek by the time the episode aired.

“Originally the guy had flowers and they kissed on the mouth,” he told to a fan on Twitter according to screenshots collected by E! News and a Tumblr user. Rothbell’s Twitter handle is currently set to private.

What do you think? Should the Cartoon Network have left in the kiss? Or is it at least a step in the right direction to have gay characters present in their programs, albeit in the background? Let us know in the comments.
