Cory Monteith Died Of ‘A Mixed Drug Toxicity,’ Coroner Announces

Cory Monteith died of “a mixed drug toxicity, involving heroin and alcohol,” the British Columbia Coroners Service announced late Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the coroner’s office had revealed that the initial autopsy of the 31-year-old actor was inconclusive, and had ordered toxicology tests to pinpoint the actor’s cause of death. Monteith’s body was discovered in his room at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver on Saturday (July 13) after he missed his checkout time.

In their announcement of Monteith’s cause of death, the Coroners Service added that their investigation into the case was continuing, but added that “there is no evidence to suggest Mr. Monteith’s death was anything other than a most-tragic accident.”

Monteith recently completed his second stint in rehab tied to an ongoing struggle with drugs and alcohol. According to initial reports, police did not say whether they found any evidence of drug use in the actor’s hotel room. In April, Monteith voluntarily checked into a facility to deal with an unspecified substance abuse issue.

E! Online reported that video surveillance tape showed the actor returning to his hotel alone around two in the morning and did not show anyone but the “Glee” star entering his room.

Monteith missed the final two episodes of last season’s “Glee” due to his rehab stint and it was unclear at press time how the show would deal with his death in the upcoming season. His co-star on the series, Matthew Morrison, joined drop-in cast member Gwyneth Paltrow in paying tribute to Monteith on Sunday.

No funeral arrangements have been announced yet. In concluding its report, the Coroners Service said that Monteith’s family had been made aware of the circumstances surrounding his death, adding “The BC Coroners Service expresses its sincere condolences to Mr. Monteith’s family and friends.”
