Just when you thought it was safe to buy your kid My Buddy — perhaps at a garage sale, since production stopped — the homicidal doll is back in “Curse of Chucky.” Set for release on DVD and Blu-ray on October 8, the film premiered a trailer today which updates the “Child’s Play” series for a whole new generation of terrified tots (and their unlucky parents and guardians).
In the trailer, which premiered Monday (July 8) on Mashable, a family moves into a new home, only to receive an unexpected package at the door. It contains a new doll, which the family’s daughter immediately takes a shine to. Unfortunately, that doll, Chucky, is still possessed by the evil spirit of a deceased serial killer — thankfully played by Brad Dourif, who provided his, let’s say, unhinged voice in all of the previous films. Numerous murders ensue in only the way that Chucky can, ahem, execute them, but not before he uses his adorable façade to ensnare a handful of unsuspecting parents and protectors.
Don Mancini, who created the little monster, returns as both writer and director, ensuring that the film exudes authenticity as it expands the mythology of one of the most unusual — and yet enduring horror villains in the genre’s history. Unfortunately, there’s no indication that Chucky’s bride, played by Jennifer Tilly, or his son, played by Billy Boyd, will appear in the film.
“Curse of Chucky” is the sixth film in the series, not counting three short films that Mancini created in 2005 and 2006. It’s also the first full-length Chucky adventure since 2004, which means that anticipation has reached feverish levels.
