The survivors on “The Walking Dead” may have a literal horde of problems to face on a daily basis, but they haven’t gone up against anything like the Apes. And in a nice bit of cross-pocalyptic promotion, a new look at the eagerly anticipated pre-sequel “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” premiered during the season finale of “Walking Dead.”
The teaser features more scenes than the brief trailer released in December, with a new voiceover. But the money shot comes at the very beginning, as a large metal door opens to reveal an army of apes on horseback.
“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” takes places years after the near-destruction of the human race, and ascension of intelligent apes — led by the soulful Caesar, played by Andy Serkis Ô in 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”
The sequel continues the long march to joining up with the continuity of the original “Planet of the Apes” movie, though how far (or close) it comes we won’t be sure until it hits theaters in July.
“Dawn” is directed by Matt Reeves, and also stars Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke and Keri Russell as the humans who will alternately think the apes are just dumb animals, not realizing their hubris and causing their own tragic downfall; and the humans who plead with the people who hate the apes, siding with the animals and ultimately leading to their own tragic downfall.
Though we’re just guessing those parts.
“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is in theaters on July 11.
