Dax Shepard And Kristin Bell Finally Do It!

Dax Shepard and Kristin Bell said long ago that they would hold off on getting married until everyone could, including gay couples. And while same-sex marriage is still illegal in most states, five months after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and overturned California’s gay marriage ban (commonly known as Proposition 8) the longtime couple finally tied the knot.

According to TMZ, Shepard, 38, and Bell, 33, who have a seven-month-old daughter, Lincoln, made it official in a ceremony at the Beverly Hills County Clerk’s office in Los Angeles. Not many details are available on the ceremony, which US Weekly said took place on Thursday afternoon, but the move was not unexpected considering that Bell tweeted in June about how she “re-proposed” to Shepard after the DOMA decision.

“@dasehapard1 will you marry me? Xo #marriageequality #loveislove,” she wrote at the time.

Shepard was equally enthusiastic, responding, “DOMA is dead. Prop 8 is dead. Now let’s bring my big, gay marriage to @IMKristinBell to Life!!!!”

“I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my [gay and lesbian] friends,” Bell said in August 2012 about the couple’s decision to hold off on getting married despite being engaged since 2009. “It’s just kind of rude to invite everyone to a party for a rite not everyone can hold.”

TMZ described the ceremony as “no-frills,” saying there was a photographer present and that Bell cried following what sounded like an impromptu decision. An unnamed eyewitness told the site that the couple went to the clerk’s office to get their marriage license, but then agreed to get married when a court employee offered to preside right there and then.
