IDK about you, but I was REALLY feeling a lot of the looks on the 2014 VMA red carpet. There was a distinct lack of normcore, with most of the PYTs hitting the carpet swaddling themselves in high fashion designer duds (most of it custom), and MAN, were their efforts worth it. Let’s take a closer look at who really turned it out!
MILEY CYRUS IN ALEXANDRE VAUTHIER

Similar in silhouette to her VMA outfit last year, Miley Cyrus toned things down for 2014 with a leather Alexandre Vauthier bandeau and high-waisted leather harem pants.
NICKI MINAJ IN SAINT LAURENT

Nicki Minaj slinked down the carpet in a snake print gold mini by Saint Laurent. Completely sparkly and a large bold print, it was wild compared to other looks we saw tonight, but still pretty tame compared to 100% of her previous VMA looks.
CHARLI XCX IN MOSCHINO

Speaking of wild, Charli XCX‘s tiger-striped Moschino by Jeremy Scott paired with her extra-long Vivienne Westwood clutch made for maximum slayage on the red carpet. It totally didn’t even matter that she wasn’t wearing any underwear.
RITA ORA IN DONNA KARAN ATELIER

It’s unclear whether Rita Ora was wearing underwear with this silk Donna Karan Atelier slip dress, but I’m gonna venture to say she’s not. And if I were wearing a slit that high, I wouldn’t be working it as effortlessly (or confidently) Rita. #bow
KATY PERRY AND RIFF RAFF IN VERSACE

It’s rare we include couples on this list, but how could we NOT highlight this moment? Not only did Katy Perry and Riff Raff totally blow our minds with this recreation of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s 2001 AMA double denim, but Katy Kat and Jody Highroller did it in CUSTOM VERSACE. Exceptional.
JENNIFER LOPEZ IN CHARBEL ZOE

I’d like to know what kind of water Jennifer Lopez drinks because she has not aged at ALL. Also, this Charbel Zoe is the most stunning outfit I’ve ever seen in real life. It glittered like it was covered in thousands of diamonds. TBH, I’m not entirely sure it wasn’t.

Also on the silver train was our House Of Style host Iggy Azalea who looked like a straight-up cyborg in this Atelier Versace ‘fit. Looks like she may have really taken a lesson or two away from that sit-down with J.Lo.

On the complete opposite tip, Solange went for dark colors and menswear with this midnight suit from H&M Studio with an oversize jacket. She kept it feminine with a voluminous Diana Ross hairstyle, no shirt underneath, and red (yes, RED) eyelashes.

And of course, there’s Sol’s sis: Miss Beyonce. Our Michael Jackson Video Vanguard winner of the night literally shut down the red carpet in this black lace Nicolas Jebran gown.

Finally, we end on Demi Lovato, the MTV Style team’s unanimous vote for Overall Best Dressed. WOW. This bright red Lanvin. It’s low-cut neckline. The elegant drape and cinch at the middle. The sexy center slit. The floaty weightlessness of the fabric. It was/is/will always be perfect. #WERK, Demi.
