Joe Jonas didn’t hold anything back in his explosive tell-all for New York Magazine. The 24-year-old singer lifted the veil on everything from losing his virginity to experimenting with drugs with Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus to his creative frustrations during his Disney days.
Since the essay was published over the weekend, Lovato has shown support for her ex-boyfriend and former co-star. Lovato doesn’t seem to harbor any resentment for Jonas, who candidly opened up about their short-term relationship, her issues with substance abuse and how she convinced him to try marijuana for the first time with Miley Cyrus.
“@joejonas love you brother. #family/friendsforever,” she tweeted. While Demi has since commented on the piece, Miley has not addressed any of it. But, Demi’s sister, Dallas, seemed unhappy that Jonas got so specific about Demi in the article.
She tweeted, “Pathetic how people cut others down to get attention off themselves.. Loser.”
The essay chronicles his creative differences with Disney. Jonas put out his Fastlife solo album on Hollywood Records, a label affiliated with the network, and wanted to go in a Hall & Oates musical direction. But the record company wanted to make him the next Justin Timberlake.
It was one of the many times he fell to pressure from execs instead of following his own heart, he explained, but fellow former Disney star Dylan Sprouse (of “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody”) disagrees — although he is never mentioned in the piece.
“I think it’s bulls— that they were being robbed of choice or creativity. If they wanted to, they could have told Disney ‘NO.’ Cole and I did this hundreds of times and we ended up all right,” Dylan, who currently attends New York University, shared on Tumblr. “The only reason they didn’t is because, like many of the people on that channel, I think they fell for the allure of fame. Granted, Cole and I had been acting our entire lives, so we saw it as a means to an end (money making) rather than an opportunity to become successful.”
“You do not have to become something else to be successful,” he added. “Not only is it not too late for them to redefine themselves now, it was never too late.”
While neither of his brothers, Nick or Kevin, have publicly commented on the piece, which also addresses their break-up, fans have responded to Joe’s confessions, showing their support for him and his candidness on the pressures of fame.
@LaurenMGalley wrote, “Joe Jonas’s tell all interview reminds us that things are not always as they seem in television & media! #blinded.” @Deko__ added, “Joe Jonas’ New York Magazine interview is just wow..”
However, some fans were upset that Joe was so open in the piece. @Emily_Ann13 wrote, “Hey Joe Jonas do everyone a favor and never speak again.”
