‘Divergent’ First Footage: What Will Fans See At Comic-Con?

The train pulls into San Diego on Thursday (July 18) afternoon, with studio Summit Entertainment debuting the first footage from its dystopian drama during a panel at Comic-Con — which will also include author Veronica Roth, director Neil Burger and stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Ansel Elgort, Mekhi Phifer, Ben Lamb, Ben Lloyd-Hughes and Christian Madsen.

The film is set in a near-future Chicago, in which society has been divided into five factions, each upholding a specific virtue. There’s Abnegation, the selfless; Erudite, the intelligent; Dauntless, the brave; Amity, the peaceful; and Candor, the honest. Each citizen is tested at the age of 16 and must decide which faction they will join. Against this backdrop we meet protagonist Beatrice Prior, an Abnegation-raised teen, who after receiving inconclusive results from her testing, decides to leave home and join up with the daring Dauntless.

Roth’s New York Times best-seller has earned itself a legion of fans, many of whom are no doubt eager to see how their beloved tale will be translate to the big screen. What scene will Initiate’s be treated to at the Con? We can’t say for sure, but here are five MTV News hopes to sneak peek during the panel.

The Choosing Ceremony
One of the first pivotal moments in “Divergent,” Tris (still known by her given name Beatrice) makes the surprise decision to join up with the Dauntless, which she indicates by slicing her flesh and letting her blood drip onto lit coals. How’s that for dramatic?

Tris Takes a Leap
Whether it’s her first drop — still swathed in Abnegation gray — from a Chicago rooftop, or a calculated jump into a speeding elevated train, we want to see Tris in action. That’s what the Dauntless are all about, right?

What Are The 10 Hottest Panels At Comic-Con?

The Ferris Wheel Scene
During a game of Capture the Flag among the Dauntless, Tris climbs the Navy Pier Ferris wheel — with teacher Four at her back — to get a better vantage point of the opposing team’s location. It’s a thrilling moment in which the pair’s undeniable chemistry is taken to new heights — literally and figuratively.

The First Kiss

Of course, the heat between Tris and Four can’t be denied forever, leading to, well, you know. Never let it be said that MTV isn’t a romantic at heart. Sigh.

The Fear Landscape
In order to defeat your fears, you must face them. It’s a principle tenant of the Dauntless, and one put into practice for its initiates. Despite knowing the images aren’t real, it’s a terrifying experience, and depending upon the level of special effects required may be the long-shot among our selected scenes.
