So how do you follow up an all-star concert in your beloved hometown? If you’re Drake, you drop the new single to your much-anticipated album.
After sharing his OVO Fest stage with Diddy, Ma$e, Lil Wayne and Kanye West, Drizzy gave radio the go-ahead to premiere “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” a new pop-drenched track slated to anchor his upcoming September 17 album Nothing Was the Same.
WGCI in Chicago dropped the song on Tuesday morning (August 6), while blog site Hip-Hop-N-More delivered the first radio rip to the Internet where the track quickly spread. The song opens with 1980s-styled power drums, before Drizzy seduces his good-girl crush. “I got my eyes on you/ You’re everything that I see/ I want your hot love and emotion, endlessly,” he sings in a breathy tone.
With his first NWTS single, Drizzy scraped the bottom of rap’s sound bed for a dark trap-based ode, but with “Hold On” the Young Money hit maker reaches for something brighter. It’s a duality that he’s been exhibiting since his 2009 breakout tape So Far Gone.
Drizzy sings throughout as he tries to lure an unsure lover into his arms. “Cause you’re a good girl and you know it/ I know exactly who you can be,” he reassures before instructing: “Just hold on, we’re going home.”
With a little more than a month left until Nothing Was the Same drops, October’s Very Own is clearly turning up on the heat. At last night’s OVO Fest in Toronto’s Molson Amphitheatre he played host to James Blake, Wale, Diddy, Ma$e, Big Sean, J. Cole, Miguel, Lil Wayne and even ended his quiet rap feud with Kanye West, on the same day Yeezy was announced as a 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performer. “That was probably the most important moment in my career to date,” Drake told MTV News after the show.
