As if his infectious hit wasn’t proof enough, Drake is proving that he’s here when he returns to the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday to give his first live television performance of “Started from the Bottom.”
The video for his Nothing Was the Same lead single is up for two awards at this year’s show, including Best Direction and Best Hip Hop Video. (And judging from his tweet Wednesday morning, he’s particularly motivated to go home with one of the coveted Kaws-designed Moonmen. While he was there at last year’s VMAs to accept the Best Hip Hop award for “HYFR” with Lil Wayne, this will mark his first performance since 2010.
And he’s hardly the only big name on the lineup at this year’s show, which goes live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The Toronto MC joins previously announced performers Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke.
But who will be manning the DJ booth? None other than DJ Cassidy, fresh off touring with Jay Z and Justin Timberlake on their Legends of Summer stadium tour. MTV also announced that “Video of the Year” and “Best Female Video” nominee Taylor Swift will present, along with “Best Song of the Summer” nominee Selena Gomez, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, 30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto (who is nominated for “Best Rock Video”), Kevin Hart, Emeli Sandé and “Best Hip-Hop Video” nominee A$AP Rocky.
To celebrate the forthcoming performance, MTV Hits and MTV Jams will feature a block of Drake music videos and musical performances at 3 p.m. ET/PT.
