Dyme-A-Duzin name may be a little misleading. His moniker may suggest otherwise, but the rap upstart is one of a kind, with a heightened sense of style.
Brooklyn’s biggest rap stars have all had some type of street cred, but Dymez shows another side of the borough and his artistic vision has paid dividends of the Warner Music Group-signee, who made major waves with his Portrait of Donnovan mixtape earlier this year.
Before MTV takes the 2013 Video Music Awards to the Barclays Center on Sunday, August 25, we hit the streets of Brooklyn to soak up some culture from the borough’s emerging hip-hop talent, like eXquire and Troy Ave. Every day this week, we’ll spotlight a brand-new artist for our Brooklyn Hip-Hop Week, and Dyme-A-Duzin is next up.
Where I’m From
“When I think of [Crown Heights, Brooklyn] I think of the corner stores, the 99-cent stores and now the Barclays Center. I think of Jay, I think of Biggie, that’s what Brooklyn is to me though.”
The Brooklyn Influencers
“It’s a lot of people in Brooklyn that just really inspired me to do what I do. Definitely Jay Z, that dope flow and that wittiness and that style. That’s a Brooklyn cat on the mic, that’s a hustler on the mic. Busta [Rhymes] with the way he stays creative and innovative with his music and his videos. Just the way he used his voice… I really picked up off that. You gotta say [the Notorious B.I.G.], that slow flow, not rhyming to fast… Biggie just really laid back on that beat always. It made you understand what he was sayin’.”
The Brooklyn MC Is…
“The lyrics, gotta have the lyrics. You gotta have the flow, you gotta have that Brooklyn swag, I say swank. You just gotta be real laid back and cool with yours.”
2013 VMAs
“The VMAs being in Brooklyn this year is amazing. I never thought it would happen, for it to be so close. You got the Madison Square Garden; you got the Radio City Music Hall, where you have to get on the train, go out to the city, but to have an event this big… to be 15 minutes away from me is so surreal. I’m proud of the borough and I feel like it’s our time again. It’s been our time before but it’s starting all over.”
