The newest Hollywood “it” couple everyone will be talking about? Oscar and Ellen.
Academy Awards producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced Friday that comedian Ellen DeGeneres will host the 2014 Oscars.
“We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars,” Zadan and Meron said in a statement. “As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars. There are few stars today who have Ellen’s gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are.”
This will be DeGeneres’ second time emceeing the film industry’s biggest night. She wielded the mic back in 2007, earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program.
“I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say — the third time’s the charm,” the talk show host joked in a statement.
It had been earlier speculated that last year’s host, “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane, would return for a repeat performance, despite raising eyebrows (and plenty of ire) with his controversial jokes. But MacFarlane set the record straight back in March, tweeting: “Traumatized critics exhale: I’m unable to do the Oscars again. Tried to make it work schedule-wise, but I need sleep…”
The Oscars will air Sunday, March 2, 2014, on ABC.
