It took a to stop a pop ruler on the Billboard Digital Songs chart.
After running the board for several weeks (while topping the Billboard Hot 100 tally), “Royals” by New Zealand’s Lorde fell to #2 (256,000), taking a back seat to the third promotional track to be released from Eminem’s upcoming The Marshall Mathers LP 2.
“Rap God” moved 270,000, which was a bit behind the 356,000 sold by “Berzerk” in its first week, but well ahead of the numbers for “Survival” (112,000).
Bieber Does It Again
In a week when many of the names in the top 10 suffered drops, Justin Bieber came in at #6 with the latest fresh track released as part of his Music Mondays series, (127,000).
The rest of the top 10: Katy Perry, “Roar” (#3, 189,000), Avicii, “Wake Me Up” (#4, 184,000), Cyrus, “Wrecking Ball” (#5, 165,000), Drake, “Hold On, We’re Going Home” (#7, 107,000) and Ylvis, “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” (#8, 104,000). The only newcomer in the tally was OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars,” which moved up a few spots to #9 thanks to sales of 103,000.
Pearl Jam Score Lucky #5
Twenty years into their almost guaranteed Rock and Roll hall of Fame career
, Pearl Jam clearly still have it. The group’s 10th studio album, Lightning Bolt will become their second #1 debut in a row next week when it snatches the top spot from Miley Cyrus thanks to sales of 166,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
That’s a tad below the 189,000 open of 2009’s Backspacer and almost half of the 280,000 moved by their 2006 self-titled effort, but still good enough to give the Seattle veterans their fifth #1 debut.
Miley’s Mega Drop
After a decent debut week, Cyrus’ Bangerz suffered a major dip, dropping 73 percent on sales of 72,000, for a two week total of 343,000. After three weeks, New Zealand’s Lorde is creeping up on Miley, dropping one spot to #7, as Pure Heroine moved another 48,000 for a three-week total of 239,000. By comparison, Drake’s Nothing Was the Same was off 30 percent in its fourth week (58,000), moving down one slot as its one-month numbers put it a shade below 950,000 so far.
Justin and Pusha Exit Top 10
The third go-round for Justin Timberlake’s The 20/20 Experience — 2 of 2 is not living up to the first half of his 2013 two-fer, sliding another six spots to #11 as sales trailed off by 49 percent to 35,000 for a total so far of 455,000. He had company from the Clipse’s Pusha T, whose long-delayed solo debut, My Name is My Name dropped 10 in week two to #14, as sales slid by 74 percent to just under 20,000.
Everyone will have to take a back seat next week when Katy Perry’s Prism is expected to easily top the charts. Fifth Harmony’s debut album will also hit shelves, as well as the latest from emo rockers AFI.
