In the wake of a proposed ban on “Ender’s Game,” the upcoming science fiction opus adapted from Orson Scott Card, the author issued a statement Monday in an effort to redirect attention to the film — instead of some of his controversial statements about gay marriage.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Card said, “Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984.
Responding in part to the recent Supreme Court decision to strike down anti-gay marriage legislation, Card declared the issue unsettled. “With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot,” Card wrote. “The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state.
“Now it will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute,” he added.
Card’s statement follows the announcement that he will not join “Ender’s Game” stars Harrison Ford and Asa Butterfield at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, where they will unveil an extended look at some of its footage. Card’s absence came as a shock to many in the sci-fi and fantasy community because of the strong presence of his work at the convention in past years. But it remains to be seen whether Card’s response to those threats will assuage his opponents in the gay marriage debate, and encourage them to reciprocate the tolerance he advances in his statement.
