The premise of “Are You the One?” seems simple enough: 20 guys and girls living in paradise attempt — in 10 tries — to find their perfect (and scientifically proven) match. Throw in competitions with fantasy dates on the line, the Truth Booth and Match-up Ceremonies — plus a $1 million prize — and it’s ready, set, game on.
But when it comes to matters of the heart, emotions can run high. Throw in a dash of jealousy, and you’ve got a recipe that could derail the task at hand: finding true love. As we gear up for the show’s Season 2 premiere, here’s a look at some mistakes the original cast members made — and everything the new crew shouldn’t do while searching for their soul mate:
Don’t fall hard for someone on the first night.
Sure, a physical spark can be established instantaneously, but an emotional connection? That’s a different story. Case in point: When Chris T fell head over heels for Shanley as soon as they struck up a conversation and the two locked lips that first night. “Yes, it’s early, I know, but you can’t change the way somebody feels when it’s strong,” Chris declared, defending his unpopular action. Indeed, their behavior wasn’t well-received by their housemates — Kayla, for one, thought the duo was moving way too fast and jeopardizing the team’s goal; Ryan gawked as they engaged in some PDA. Soon enough, they learned the results of their compatibility tests in the Truth Booth: They weren’t, well, compatible.
Don’t keep hooking up with a confirmed non-match.
Another honorable mention for Chris and Shanley, who taught us this lesson: Do not use the Boom Boom Room if you aren’t with a potential match, and don’t ever use it with a tested and approved non-match. It’ll distract you from actually searching for your true love — and surely piss off your housemates.
Don’t stray from your initial reaction.
Amber and Ethan represent an “AYTO” fairytale — they’re husband and wife, as well as parents-to-be to a baby girl — but their journey wasn’t without a tiny bump in the road.
That’s right — Amber chose Adam and Ethan picked Kayla at one particularly tense Match-up Ceremony, but the adorable lovebirds found each other again, and the rest is history.
Don’t lose your s**t if your romantic interest is a confirmed match with someone else.
This one’s pretty self-explanatory, but we’ll elaborate: Always try to keep it in check if you’re going to lose your significant other to the Honeymoon Suite — and don’t throw things. RIP Gatorade bottle.
Don’t fool around with anyone else if you already have a confirmed match.
Poor Colyesia let the White Party — and the booze that came with it — get the best of her. She smooched Joey, Adam and Wes plus had a three-way kiss, and while she came clean to Dillon about her actions, he had a tough time getting over the betrayal. As we learned at the baby shower special, the two were unable to rekindle their romance and are now dating other people.
