Five Seasons And A Hulu: ‘Community’ Could Return After All

What is dead may never die.

Those words are typically found on a different high-profile show, but they’re applicable when it comes to “Community,” based on recent news. Weeks after NBC canceled the Dan Harmon sitcom, it now appears that Hulu is attempting to bring the series back to life for another season.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms talks between Hulu and Sony Pictures Television for the resurrection of “Community,” though there’s no deal on the table yet. Shortly after NBC canceled the series after five seasons, Sony Pictures Television’s Jamie Erlicht said that he would fight for the show’s return.

“You can’t get to six seasons and a movie without six seasons,” said Erlicht. “This show had a remarkable history. There are real conversations we need to have with everyone as soon as we get back. We’ve been on the receiving end of some phone calls, but we really need to get together with the ‘Community’ team and have real conversations and figure out the future. If there’s any show that should have a future or could have a future, it really feels like ‘Community’ is the one.”

But Dan Harmon, creator of “Community” and show runner for four out of five seasons (the less said about season four, the better), was less optimistic about bringing the show back. In a blog post written two weeks ago, Harmon said he was “definitely in the ‘eh’ column” about the possibility of “Community” making a comeback.

“For a million reasons, some selfish, some creative, one logistic, five sexual, three racist (in a good way) and, oddly, nine isometric,” he wrote. He added that given time, his “eh” attitude would likely change to “sure, let’s talk.”

“I’m not going to be the guy that recancels cancelled ‘Community,’” he added, “But there are lots of reasons a ‘Community’ resurrection could be difficult. So be prepared for that.”

Are you hopeful about “Community” returning through Hulu?
