Things are looking pretty bad for the Westeros on the upcoming season of “Game of Thrones,” and nowhere are the stakes higher than the massive, icy Wall that protects the people from armies of invading Wildlings — and worse.
On the front lines? John Bradley as Samwell Tarly, best friend to Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and savior of Gilly (Hannah Murray). Sam the Slayer may have killed a monstrous White Walker north of the wall, but on returning home to the guards in the Night’s Watch, he’s about to encounter even bigger trouble.
“Well, they’ve got a huge task ahead of them, really,” Bradley told MTV News. “Ever since we first became acquainted with them it’s been quite clear they’ve not got the resources necessary to do the job that they have to do.”
They’ll need those resources, as an enormous army of Wildlings — free people who live without rules in the North — is gathering on both sides of the Wall, closing in on the Night’s Watch’s. And they are not ready.
“They’re the first line of defense against any attack from the North, but they’ve been sitting quite idle for years and years,” Bradley continued, “Getting rusty and gathering together this rather make-shift arsenal and hoping that they’ll never [have] to use it.”
And they will have to use that arsenal; particularly given the Night’s Watch only has a few hundred men, while the Wildlings stand tens of thousands strong including several actual giants.
“It’s terrifying for them because not only in terms of strength in numbers, but in terms of equipment available,” Bradley said. “And how anything they come up against is going to be vastly superior, and vastly have the upper hand.”
Rumors have swirled that the ninth episode of the season — the one usually reserved for massive shocks, deaths and epic battles — will be the battle for the Wall, a blockbuster moment in the third book the series is based on. Though Bradley didn’t go as far as to confirm that would be happening, he did elaborate on the coming battle.
“That really comes to a head in season four,” Bardley noted. “You do get a sense of just how much they’re fighting a losing battle all the time, and how if Wildings, and any other forces from the North decide to go at the Night’s Watch, they could find themselves in serious trouble.”
