A superhero movie without at least three deaths is considered a dull affair. Judging by recent casting news, it appears as if the unofficial title of director Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” sequel, won’t have that problem.
Jason Momoa, best known to fans as the Dothraki war-lord Khal Drogo on “Game of Thrones,” has entered negotiations to join the cast of Snyder’s new superhero sequel. The Hollywood Reporter doesn’t know exactly who Momoa will play, but they have tossed out two possibilities: Doomsday and Martian Manhunter.
Doomsday, for those who aren’t aware, is a monstrous killing machine engineered by Kryptonian scientists before the fall of their planet. In a popular but divisive 1992 storyline, Doomsday traveled to Earth and fought Superman, ultimately killing the Man of Steel. (Kal-El, of course, was alive and well little more than a year later.) Some have speculated that Doomsday could be the villain (or at least a villain) in the “Man of Steel” sequel, and a bruiser of Momoa’s caliber certainly seems to fit the bill.
On the other hand, Martian Manhunter is a very different character, albeit also hailing from outer-space. Manhunter, also known as J’onn J’onnz, first appeared in DC Comics lore as a Martian stranded on Earth, forced to live among humans. In time, he became a core member of the Justice League, and one of Superman’s closest allies.
If Momoa is indeed playing Martian Manhunter, then he’s just the latest member of the Justice League to join the “Man of Steel” sequel. Ben Affleck was cast as Batman over the summer, and Gal Gadot signed on as Wonder Woman just last week. With Momoa potentially on board as J’onn J’onnz, the “Man of Steel” sequel is looking a whole lot more like an unofficial “Justice League” movie with every passing casting addition.
It’s also worth noting that in either case — if Momoa is Doomsday or Manhunter — this is the actor’s second flirtation with playing a comic book alien in less than a year. Momoa was once the frontrunner to play green-skinned alien warrior Drax the Destroyer in Marvel’s before losing the part to Dave Bautista.
The “Man of Steel” sequel, starring returning players Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, along a whole slew of new actors, flies into theaters on July 17, 2015.
